Wishing for warmer weather. February is typically the last full month indoors but wow does the wait really get to me at this point in the year. I'm like a kid on Christmas eve waiting for Santa.

New babies fresh out of the eggs. Enjoying one of their first meals, consisting of dandelion leaves and flowers. I keep them in individual tuberware containers within the incubator for a month after they hatch. They get soaked and misted every day to ensure proper hydration and as strong of start as possible. My first group will be available at the end of April.

Finally, after an incredibly slow season, the cherryhead eggs are starting to hatch. 4 made it out of their eggs this evening. An even better bonus? Got some awesome neck colors on a few of them!

Sunday = bath day. On Sundays I give all my animals a 30 min soak. I'm a big believe in giving captive/indoor tortoises baths. Not only do regular soaks keep them hydrated, they also "relieve" themselves in the process, keeping their cage's substrate clean. For my adults, I use a craftsman's heavy duty tote with wheels. As it's very east to roll the water from the tortoise room to the backyard plants.

Freaks for figs.

Seriously my animals can't get enough of them. Besides being a tasty treat, they might be the perfect fruit for redfoots. They are relatively low in sugar and carbs while packing a decent amount of calcium.

We don't see them much at the grocery stores but we're lucky to have a friend with mature trees and a flash freezer.

Tortoises bob their heads for many reasons - including asserting dominance and to attract females for mating. In this particular instance, the male at the bottom is telling the female at the top a corny joke in hopes to win her approval for sex. "What do you get when you mix a tortoise with a porcupine?
