Be aware and keep your pets safe

We have had a few cases of mycotoxin poisoning recently. Its not a poisoning that folks are generally familiar with, so we thought we'd share the information to raise awareness.-

Ingestion of mouldy food from the bin or a compost pile puts dogs, cats, horses, livestock, and even wildlife at risk for toxicity due to tremorgenic mycotoxins. These toxins may be found in MOULDY bread, pasta, cheese, nuts, or other decaying matter like compost. Clinical signs include vomiting, agitation, incoordination, tremors, seizures, and elevated body temperature. A specific mycotoxin called aflatoxin can even cause liver failure. Be sure to keep mouldy food and compost out of your pets reach!

Why Your Dog’s GI Tract Is Crucial to Their Immunity

Our dogs and cats GI tract is the epicenter of their immune system! If your pets are unfortunate to be bombarded with everything from food allergens, toxins and prescribed medication, bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi and stress their immune systems could be compromised. Only a single cell layer separates the inside of your pet’s gut from 80% of their immune system. This biofilm we like to think of as a gooey bomb shelter or shield for all the GOOD gut bacteria, yeast, and parasites to hide under so they can survive even the strongest antibiotics and anti-fungals (natural or medication) that would potentially kill them off.
Biofilm start out with individual bacteria and when conditions are favorable, they start forming communities by adhering to the surface, like the gut walls.
This is where the development of tolerance of our pet’s own bacteria, development of food and environmental allergies and the beginning of autoimmune diseases occur.
Keeping our pet’s intestinal lining strong, avoiding things that weaken it are crucial in preventing and reversing autoimmune disease, food and environmental allergies and many other inflammatory diseases.

Jim Nelson with Morwinas Fenrir who won 1st Special Beginners, Best Special Beginners and Working Group Special Beginners 2nd.

Today, I’m honouring this inspirational lady who devoted her life to saving dogs. And what a legacy she did leave behind, and to all the animals, we must be kind.

This is not to criticise anyone, just to educate people.

When you find a hedgehog laid, wobbling, limping on your lawn, pathway, road in the DAY, please pick it up with a towel and put it in a HIGH SIDED Box 📦 a shoe box is NOT a suitable size. As sick as the animal may look, it can and will probably get out.

THEN phone a rescue for advice, because in the last 2 weeks alone I’ve had 5 calls about wobbly sick looking hedgehogs 🦔 that the finder thinks needs help. Which is fabulous, but by the time they’ve Googled a rescue, phoned or messaged and sometimes had to wait for a reply the hedgehog has gone. Please bear in mind most rescues are independent, self funded places and to fund this, the kind person running it has a full time job. Sadly, we don’t run like the RSPCA with immediate response.

In a lot of cases we get calls that the hedgehog has now ‘gone’ and there’s nothing really we can do. Chances are it will go to another garden, road etc and be over-looked and die that day or in some cases a few days afterwards in pain from it’s affliction.

On very rare occasions, it is found days later alive, but has been attacked by birds (they peck their eye) or flies have laid eggs on it, which turn into maggots within the day usually.

Please please please don’t leave them under a bush, on the lawn, or in a shoe box while searching for help. They need a HIGH sided box, then call the rescue.

These little creatures are getting rarer and dwindling at an alarming rate. We feel the loss of every cold, lifeless hedgehog brought to us. Some have been poisoned, been trapped in snares, stuck on bait tapes (I know you don’t use poison or your neighbour, but Joe Bloggs 20 streets away does) hedgehogs can travel up to a mile a night in search of food. Hence the need for hedgehog highways to keep them away from the roads. A 13cm or cd size hole is perfect 🤩

Being a dog groomer means that I get very attached to my friends, I love their visits and all the cuddles and kisses while they are being groomed.
Sadly, here is one beautiful lad that I will not see again as he has very sadly passed over the rainbow bridge.
My thoughts are with his special mum who is heartbroken.
