Meet Lux. I’m a blue copper maran and we’re pretty sure this one’s a rooster. Hard to say for sure yet, but it’s the only chicken with a giant comb and wattles. Only sure fire way to know is watch for eggs. They’re 8 weeks now, should start laying around 20 weeks. 🥚

Meet Frieza! This is my son’s chicken. He named her after an anime character and it just so happens that she’s the SWEETEST of all the chickens. She purrs and sings when you hold/pet her. She’s never one to flap her wings or freak out. She comes right up and wants to be picked up and held. She’s the only one who gets pets and snuggles every day. She’s a Buff Orpington. 🐓

Living in Zone 4b means growing lavender is TOUGH. It doesn’t like the harsh winters and definitely doesn’t like the humid Summers here in Minnesota. It also needs well drained and slightly alkaline soil. Growing it in pots is the way to go buuuuut I don’t wanna. 😆 I’m up for a challenge and I will forever dream of having my very own lavender fields inspired by the ones of the PNW. Wish me luck.🪻

Meet PEPPER! Definitely named correctly. Top of the pecking order. She’s a Plymouth Barred Rock, and she’s the most curious of all the hens. We initially thought she was a he, but we’re almost sure now she is a she due to her lack of double barring on her feathers and no white spot on top of her head, but we shall see!

This week’s “Chicken of the week” award goes to Dorothy. TBH she’s kind of a be-hatch. She’s spicy, vocal, and will take out any other chicks that stand in her way of getting at the tasty treats I give them each morning and night. I mean, I can relate. 🍓First; Everbearing (wild) strawberries are a gift that keeps on giving! They’re perennial and each year they’ll grow and spread for added delicious harvests…or to split and share with your besties. 🍓Second; they make a great ground cover that helps retain moisture and control erosion around your gardens. 🍓And last; um…the most deliciously sweet strawberries of course!
