We talk a lot about the way we measure our highlands, weather adult size or calves, with our farm visitors. A lot of people measure to the hook, which is typically 2-4" shorter than the top of the back. We measure our cattle at the top of the back, in line with the hook. A few inches in height really can be the difference between a micro to a mini, or a mini to a mid-size.
We try very hard to represent our cattle accurately. If we had measured these girls to the hook, they would've easily fallen in line with mini highlands qualifications. However, we feel that is a misrepresentation of the highland cattle. This group is beautiful and friendly but unfortunately they dont fit our farm program. We know someone will be very happy with having them on their farm.
We are not perfect and I'm sure we make mistakes, but we always welcome farm visitors! We are expecting 40+ calves this year that will fall into the micro and mini sizing. We encourage you to come meet with us, visit our farm, see our cows. We'd love to show you around!!

Everyday we go out to feed hay, and we make our rounds checking the girls. We are looking for signs of illness, progression with pregnancy, and even signs of labor. We have about 14 more girls due this spring, then a round in the fall, and some of them are getting soooo close!🥰

We have another little bull calf! Crew got a little buddy yesterday, and tried SO hard to be his friend. His mama wasn't having any of that though. Leave us your favorite "C" name!

I love his silver markings. He reminded us of a chocolate chip cookie, so we named him chip for short. 😊 We had another mini highland calf born this morning. Waiting on his mama to get him cleaned up before we try and take some photos. 🥰 Calving season, is my favorite season!

Finally sharing the names we picked for these two. So many of you suggested Clementine for Izzy's heifer, and we loved it! Next to her is Clyde, Clarabelle's bull. These two are SO adorable, and the best of friends. She's even giving him a little kiss. 🥰

Chip is an adorable HiPark bull calf. He is 50% Highland and 50% British Park, and has beautiful silver color markings. His Dam is adorable. He is learning all about halter training, and that humans are his friends.

The kids enjoy jumping in to help out with the calves, sometimes. 🤣 As they grow, they start thinking we're not as cool as we once were, so we'll take these small moments with them any chance we can!

🎊Look at this beautiful heifer She was born in January, on one of the hottest days of the year so far. She is 21.5" and such a spunky little thing! Her mom was one of the very first calves we had on our farm, and it's so sweet to see her all grown up and caring for her own.
This calf marks the end of our spring calving season. We have 6 heifers and 9 bulls. Our event for moving the remaining highland calves to new pastures start now 🥰 Who's excited? 🙋🙋♀️

A study of a commercial herd in the UK found that, put to pasture, more than half of the animals spent time eating and resting alongside a specific individual. Separated from the larger group, cows that were paired with their favorite friend maintained lower heart rates and did not stamp, toss their heads, pace, or sway as much as cows paired with individuals they’d shown no partiality toward. It turns out that cows are especially interested in—and affectionate toward—particular cows.
Cooper and Candy definitely have that bond going on right now. It's so cool to see!
