I've seen people state that if a (professional) trainer does a good enough job, anyone should be able to do anything with a horse. That is not true. Everyone who handles, rides, or works with a horse is "training" the horse. How good or how bad of a horse "trainer" is each and every person handling or riding that horse? The horse works at the level of the rider or handler. The horse doesn't know they aren't supposed to listen to you when you tell them to do something wrong, ask them incorrectly, or inadvertently reward an undesirable behavior.

If you think you are asking the horse to collect and lope off correctly but you are actually bumping, bouncing your legs, pulling on their face, getting off balance in your seat and/or otherwise cueing incorrectly, how is the horse supposed to know what is correct? If you are working a horse and you allow it to be distracted, pushy, or dull to your cues, you have just trained the horse those reactions to your requests are acceptable. If you go to get a horse out of its stall or pasture, it pins its ears and your reaction is to leave that horse without getting it, you have just trained that horse that pinning its ears and being disrespectful is not only acceptable behavior, but the behavior you are rewarding. If you ask a horse to give to the bit, it pulls against you, and you release the pressure, you have just trained the horse, through the reward of the release, to be resistant and not give to pressure.

How well are you training your horse each and every time you handle and ride them?

Each and every rider/handler/exhibitor has a responsibility to learn, be teachable, be self aware of their own abilities, work at becoming a more skilled rider and handler and be a better horseman for their horse. It is not all the responsibility of the horse or the trainer.

There is a difference between a person who owns horses and a horseman/horsewoman. A true horseman aspires to become a better horseman.

Last week and most of this week we got to ride outside... until today. β„οΈβ˜ƒοΈπŸŒ¨οΈ Well, the outdoor arena is beautifully groomed under all that snow. πŸ€·πŸ»πŸ˜β„οΈπŸŒ¨οΈ

πŸ˜‚πŸ€£ These two literally wait while I'm cleaning the aisles to catch any food that might blow their way. 🍎🐴

This guy is really an 80 lb lap dog (he's a Rottweiler πŸ˜…) stuck in a 1200# horse body. πŸ€£πŸ’™πŸ΄

A snippet of the glamorous life of a show barn. πŸ˜† Loading bedding (sawdust) by hand, a forkful at a time. We go about 4-5 times per week.

"Got Her Dun" is "jack of all trades" and is actually master of many- IBHA World and Reserve World Champion, ARHA World Show top ten, 8x AQHA World qualifier, NRHA money earner, Green Reiner extradonaire, patient lesson horse for all ages, and here, a wee pony horse. πŸ’™πŸ΄πŸ˜

Our Story

We offer horseback riding lessons for riders of all levels- ages 6+. Lessons are 60 minutes- on our horse or yours. Private or group lessons are available.

We offer instruction, coaching and lessons in: general horseback riding, ground work, Western and English disciplines, including western pleasure, horsemanship, showmanship, trail, hunter under saddle, equitation, ranch pleasure and reining.

We have an indoor arena and an outdoor arena for year round riding.
