Bethel Friends of Canines started in the summer of 2011 in the small rural village of Bethel, Alaska. We rescue on average 525 animals a year!

Bethel Friends of Canines is a community organization that works with local governments and volunteers to find homes for abandoned and neglected animals, and to better the life of canines in Bethel and the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta. We work to find permanent homes for the abandoned and neglected dogs of our community. We work closely with larger rescues in the Anchorage/Mat-Su area, which is almost 35
0 air miles away, to find loving forever homes. As well as forever homes, we also help community members spay and neuter their dogs and help with the overall care of canines in our community. We are volunteer based, so if you would like to join an organization that is doing incredible things, we'd love to have you on our team!
Oakley went out on a walk today. He did great meeting people along the way, he walks great on leash (doesn't pull after a bit because he is sooo excited!), he sits when waiting to cross the street.

We have been asked quite a bit recently if we do adoptions outside of Bethel. Yes we do!
We will do adoptions outside of Bethel, if the animals are already spayed or neutered. In each animal's profile it will say neutered male or spayed female indicating that they are already fixed. Those are the ones that can be adopted outside of Bethel, directly to an approved adopter. Potential adopters still need to fill out the adoption application on our website. Outside of Bethel adopters are responsible for: the adoption fee, a kennel (we have them for sale if you don't have one), as well as any cost to get the animal to you.

Happy is an 11ish month old Lab mix. He is neutered and a big guy! He does well with most other dogs and great with kids.
He is a super sweet guy, like his name implies.

We were recently recipeints of a grant from Banfield Foundation this allowed us to obtain a portable ultrasound machine and enough surgery tools to make 22 more surgery packs!!
The extra tools let us have enough surgery packs to get through an entire several day long spay/neuter clinic! This allows us more time to see more patients instead of the several hours it takes at night in the field to clean, pack and sterilize packs.

BFK9 held our first spay/neuter clinic for the summer of 2024, this summer we're doing things a little different thanks to a grant from Northern Tier Shelter Initiative! We are bringing dogs/cats in from villages to get fixed and then sent home!!
We also were able to put our new surgery instruments to use, from a grant that was received from Banfield Foundation
On Thursday we spayed or neutered 15 animals! We look forward to more of these clinics this summer!

I can't tell if our helpers are helping or causing more mayhem. What a nice trio these 3 are! Spot the speckled one is waiting for weather to improve so she can go home to her family in Newtok. She came in to get spayed 💜 Friday is heading into Anchorage tonight to forget me knot rescue Smokey Joe the Lab came into the pound as a stray so weak and emaciated he could barely walk. Now his personality is starting to shine and boy is it bright! He might be a little bit of a dum dum, but is he sweet as sugar! He is also up for adoption!!!
He's a big tease
There's been a lot of estrogen in here the last couple days. A boy was picked up yesterday and he has made himself right at home, picking on all the girls. They're all taking it in stride thankfully. There's a leash law in Bethel, please keep your dogs in the yard when they're outside.
We started working basic obedience with Reign today. We're starting with sit and focus. She's starting to get the hang of it!
