Solstice Spices Award winning spices made from farm fresh local produce. Best of Utah 2015 and 2017. Solstice Spices were born out of a love of food and farming.

Our family, Tony, Heather, and Brady Peeters, began selling fresh herbs and vegetables at the local farmer's market in 2008. After a couple years, we began drying our herbs to preserve them. We used the dried herbs in our own cooking, and gave some to family as gifts. Then we decided to blend them with garlic, onions, and peppers from other local farms. We began giving our creations as Christmas g

ifts, hence the name Solstice Spices in honor of the winter solstice. Those who received our spices as gifts fell in love with the flavor and would often ask when they could have more. Some would ask if they could buy some for their friends. Eventually we decided to take our coveted flavors to market and in 2014 Solstice Spices was launched to the public. We continue to farm 2 acres in Salt Lake City, where we grow all of the herbs for our spice blends. We strive to be honest, credible, and caring, while slowing growing our spice line to share with more people.

The world lost one of the best humans last weekend. He gave his heart through continuous acts of service. We were lucky to be the recipients of his many gifts, maybe the biggest gift being his help in building our high tunnels several years ago. He was at the farm for days and days helping Tony. When we were awarded the grant to purchase the high tunnels, we had no idea how difficult it was going to be to build them. I think it took at least two months.

Papa John’s life inspires me to be more generous, to express love with kind acts, and to slow down and enjoy the small moments.

Many beautiful heirloom tomatoes have been grown in these high tunnels that were built with love from Papa John. I honor you Papa, and promise to stay close by Mama’s side. It’s the least I could do for you.

I have been doing my best to help keep up with the strawberry harvest 🍓 but they are producing every day. I love strawberries so I am not complaining.
A lesson you learn over and over again when you are a market gardener is how undervalued food is in our society. It takes me an hour to pick 1/4 of our strawberry beds which yields about 4 pounds of strawberries. I could buy 4 pounds of strawberries at the grocery chain for $20. And the immigrant who picked those strawberries probably got paid $2 or less.
After an hour of digging thru the plants in the heat, I feel like these strawberries should be worth $100. They certainly taste good enough!

Big thanks to and for allowing us to leave home and the gardens for a few days. We had some much needed quality time with family and got to explore a beautiful area of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa that we hadn’t seen before. We saw dozens of bald eagles, and watched an egret and blue heron fish for breakfast. We bathed in the energy of the forest with a bonus concert from the cicadas. We were in awe with the abundance of water in the upper Mississippi and we were humbled by the lessons of the Native Americans. We saw lots of farms and found some delicious eats. We are grateful for the time away and happy to be home. Time to get ready for market season.

I got to make my small contribution to planting season at the farm last weekend. Since I became a full time office worker 5 years ago, I have spent less time at the farm. For a few years was mostly working by himself. But last year, we grabbed the hands of some fellow urban farmer enthusiasts and decided to figure out how we could share the work and the harvest. It has been an experiment in cooperation and we don’t know what will come - no farmer ever does. But, I will say that this seems like the least stressful planting season in years and I am grateful for that.

Big gratitude to all who supported our plant sale yesterday. Being an urban farmer is a slightly crazy idea. So much time and energy goes on behind the scenes that you question your choices when you’re tired. But the thing that brings us back every time is YOU! The SLC local shopping community is incredible. I would venture to say one of best in the USA. The love we get from you helps refill our cups and carry on. I have long believed that the farmers market is where community happens. We put our hearts and dreams out on display and hope you receive them well. And yesterday you did. 🙏🏼🥰

Awe thanks SLUG Mag for the write up! We enjoyed sharing our market garden and our passion for food and nature. The 3 of us could talk farms all day and I love the bits of info that Carlysle picked. Also grateful that Logan managed to snap a couple decent photos of us old folks 😂

The people behind the Urban Pepper Project and Solstice Spices were excited to share the fruits of their labor with us here at SLUG.

I feel the momentum building on my 3rd year attending Day on the Hill with as this was the most attended so far. I was grateful to meet my rep Mark Wheatley and my senator Stephanie Pitcher in person. I also met the farm’s rep Sahara Hayes and senator Nate Blouin. I was lucky to also run into one of my sheros, Kathleen Reibe and happily surprised that Luz Escamilla is now the chair of the Local Food Advisory Council. Finally we heard from UDAF Commissioner Buttars who seems to genuinely want to support us.

A recurring theme is that our elected officials do not hear from us enough. The legislative session is all over the news and social media, but we rarely reach out to our local reps. They say they get very little feedback from their constituents. So here I am setting an intention to stay in touch on a regular basis with my reps.

We learned and socialized with our fellow farmers at the Utah Farm and Food Conference in Cedar City. We were served delicious meals prepared by and and we were inspired by Jesse Waters from , Bill McDorman from Heritage Grain Alliance, the Forbes family , and Andrew Mefford from . But I think my favorite discussion was with local pros Tyler of Madison of and Sara of along with some of our state’s best farmers market managers. It felt so healthy to share each other’s experiences. I ended the weekend listening to who I mostly don’t align with politically. Still I found I could agree with him on a thing or two. And that was my biggest takeaway. It reinforced my belief that we don’t have to agree to get along. The lines are very twisted in a place like this. We have shared experiences around farming and food, which may or may not translate to other aspects of our lives. Healthy diversity is essential for life. It is not always easy but I continue to see the benefits.

Thanks to and for encouraging us to attend and sharing their table. And special shout out to Jolene from who makes the made me the most delicious (not sweet) yogurt parfait for breakfast and also chose to gift our spices to several of her peeps.

Happy to be home slightly refreshed and rejuvenated. Wishing for more peace in this world and bring on the snow ❄️.

Solstice Spices was born on the Winter Solstice. Tony and I made a spice blend with our freshly dried garden produce and sent it to our loved ones. It was a half pint jar with a homemade shaker top. I printed some stickers with a sun. Turns out everyone loved their spice jar and asked for more. It was a decade ago that we hard launched our logo and website. We have learned so much in 10 years. Mostly we have learned that it takes a village. We need community. We need each other. No business succeeds without society’s support. We love our community and we are grateful you have helped us raise Ms Solstice Spices over the past decade. Thank you 🙏🏼

Incredibly beautiful autumn at the farm this year. I have never seen it this lush and full of green. The forecast is calling for winter this weekend which makes me sad for the plants. We are committed to harvesting as much as we possibly can to bring to the last Murray Market of the year. Send me a message if you’re interested in picking green tomatoes. Otherwise we will see you Saturday in Murray Park.
