Over the weekend, at the Stonewall Ponies- Emily Elek open house, Emily gave me the opportunity to teach some groundwork to the kids on Friday.

One of the things that stood out to me, was how fast the kids picked things up. They didn't have a ton of experience, a few had lunged a horse.

When I was a kid, basic groundwork was a part of my lessons. It became less of a thing in college, then became a deeper focus after I worked with Tik and Sinead Maynard in Florida, and came back to Wisconsin, began working with Nick Rivera.

I then embarked on a postural training, in-hand posture work, biomechanics, bodywork journey as well.

I bring all of these experiences into the arena alongside the riding as a trainer.

But back to the kids. While they were unsure at first, in just a few minutes, were getting the hang of it.

Teaching kids groundwork skills alongside the riding skills is incredibly important. It translates to how we can explain things to them under-saddle and help them learn to redirect undesired behaviors early on in their career in and out of the saddle so they can learn to respond rather than react.

They pick it up quickly and then they can apply it the rest of their career moving forward.

The earlier we teach these skills, the more natural they become.

Groundwork shouldn't be something riders discover years later — it's something they should grow up with.
