The MARS PETCARE BIOBANK stands to be the most comprehensive real-world study of its kind aimed at studying a pet’s health throughout its life to enable new scientific discoveries to improve pet health. It is made possible by pet owners enrolling their healthy pets at participating Banfield Pet Hospital, VCA Animal Hospitals, and BluePearl Pet Hospital clinics.

At BluePearl, healthy pets of Associates as well as pet blood donors can participate in the study. Toccoa, the sweet pet of our clinical studies coordinator, Susan Wadulack, CVT, was our first participant in the study at BluePearl and is now in her third year.

Here’s why Susan chose to enroll her pet:
She previously had two dogs who she sadly lost to diseases that weren’t detectable even mere months beforehand. Susan sees the study as an opportunity for scientists to identify potential signs of disease and find new ways to help prevent or even predict illness.

She shared, “My dog (Toccoa) is helping science. I wanted her to make a difference for future pets - paying it forward - for Sadie and Lily, the pets we lost. Knowing that we’re going to make a difference, that years to come it will feel good that Toccoa and I were part of it, you can’t get much better than that, especially as a nurse.”

Like Toccoa, today's pets have the power to make of the future. Learn more about the project, including how you can get involved, at https://marspetcarebiobank.com/.

Our Cobb hospital in Marietta, GA, shared, "Merle was behaving abnormally after a long drive, and his owners wanted to ensure there was nothing wrong with him." When Pablo was transferred to our emergency service at our Renton, WA, hospital after his primary care vet found that he had free fluid in his chest cavity, surrounding his lungs, he had already been in and out of veterinary offices in the day's prior due to his decreased appetite. Although many diagnostics were performed, including radiographs, abdominal ultrasound, cytology of the free chest fluid and the swelling on his chest, and blood work, nothing revealed the cause of Pablo's decreased appetite or his fever.

Our Renton hospital team shared, "Pablo was keeping a secret. Two days prior to his vet visits, Pablo had gotten into some table scraps. Among these scraps were lamb skewers. Our emergency service performed a CT scan of Pablo's chest and abdomen, and the mystery was solved. Pablo had ingested a skewer that had poked its way through his stomach wall, passed through part of his chest, and was attempting to make its escape through his chest wall!"

Our team added, "The following day, Pablo's case was taken over by our surgical team, who expertly removed the evidence of his crimes. Amazingly, there was very little internal damage caused, and Pablo's surgery and recovery was smooth sailing!"

Sweet Kylo, a 7-year-old German Shepherd, has been going through chemotherapy treatments at our North Dallas, TX, hospital for osteosarcoma of his right forelimb following amputation. Our North Dallas team shared, "His family was very concerned about what his quality of life would look like following amputation due to his size, age and previous back issues. However, he has adapted quite well and is tolerating his chemo protocol. Most days, he acts as if he doesn't even know he has been sick!"

Our team added, "He is happy and still gets to enjoy running around in the yard and playing with his ball. When he comes for his chemo appointments, it's almost like a daycare visit complete with snacks and a good nap!"

Let's cheer sweet Kylo on as he continues kicking cancer's tail with the help of our North Dallas team!

Getting ready for a Labor Day BBQ? Ensure your pet stays safe by keeping these foods out of reach: onions, chicken bones, corn cobs, unripe (green) tomatoes, avocados, apple seeds, grapes, chocolate, alcohol, and caffeine. Wishing you a fun-filled and pet-friendly holiday weekend!

Holistic care for pets begins with prioritizing good nutrition, regular physical exercise, and even mental stimulation.

Here are some tips for holistic pet care:
🐾 Maintain a healthy weight. Space out food intake (portion control) - this could mean splitting your pet’s food into smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day to help prevent hunger. Puzzle feeders or even small treasure hunts to extend mealtimes can also help keep your pet mentally stimulated and satisfied.

🐾 Engage in safe play and ensure regular exercise. Take your dog on regular walks and play catch, when possible. Cats can be harder to persuade to exercise, but the use of toys can be used to promote play.

🐾 Be careful not to give pets treats or human food in excess. Even in small quantities, human food can represent a large percentage of a pet’s daily caloric intake and can lead to unintended consequences like weight gain, toxicity or intestinal blockage.

Let's keep our pets happy and healthy!

If you notice your dog is pawing at his head or is tilting or shaking his head a lot, it could be a sign of an ear infection. Believe it or not, just like other issues we've discussed during Itchy Pet Awareness Month, this is a condition that veterinary dermatologists treat frequently.

The ear canal is lined by skin, so dogs with flaring allergy symptoms are often also suffering from an ear infection. A collection of material from the ear, looked at under a microscope, can help identify which bacteria are present.

Ear infections are often a symptom of another underlying problem, so it’s important to address the allergy or other root problem to fully resolve the issue. Learn more about veterinary dermatology at BluePearl at https://bluepearlvet.com/dermatology/.

28/08/2024

As we approach Labor Day weekend, remember that when the temperature rises, so does your pet’s risk of overheating. Dogs and cats don’t sweat like we do; they rely on panting, which isn’t as effective at cooling them off.

Signs of overheating include:
☀️ Rapid breathing and heart rate
☀️ Excessive panting and drooling
☀️ Abnormal gum color
☀️ Lethargy

What to do:
Move your pet to a cool area and offer plenty of water.
Wet them down with a hose, wet towels or a cool bath.
Avoid near-freezing water or ice – it can slow the cooling process and harm their skin.
If you don’t notice improvement in a few minutes, see a veterinarian immediately.
