A Moment in History
Submitted by DiAnn Flory, History Committee Co-Chair
“Timmie” is an unusual story. He was bred by Anthony and Anna Neary who moved to America from the small town of Bedlington, north of England. Their new home was a small rental house on Long Island. They worked hard at trying to introduce their breed to America and attended nearby dog shows on weekends. One show where the Nearys exhibited was Westminster, and as luck would have it, William A Rockefeller was one of the ringside spectators. Rockefeller later phoned the Nearys, offered to buy the dog and hired Anthony Neary as kennel manager. That was the beginning of Rock Ridge kennel.

A Moment in History
Submitted by DiAnn Flory, History Committee Co-Chair

The Morris and Essex History Committee is happy to announce the gifts recently received for our archives.

We received three catalogs that once belonged to Louis J. Murr. We are thrilled to have his show catalogs from 1947,1949 and 1950. His name is embossed on the outside covers of the Catalogs from 1947 and 1950, indicating those catalogs were given to him after his judging assignments. Tucked inside his 1947 catalog, we found two faded pink sheets of paper, which were his record copies of his markings for Afghan placements that day.
In reading more about him, we find that he was behind the famous Romanoff Kennels it is said that he refused to call his breed Borzois, but continued calling them Russian Wolfhounds all his life. Mr. Murr purchased his first Borzoi in 1917, when Nicholas II was still Czar of Russia. Where the breed had been called Russian Wolfhound. The name change from Russian Wolfhound to Borzoi came in late 1936, to conform with the name used for the breed in the rest of the world.
We also received a Catalog with Percy Roberts’ personal Catalog from 1949 with his hand-written name on the cover, with a hand written note, “English Setters.” There were 78 entries that day under Judge Earl C. Kruger.

Our thanks to Sue Lackey for donating the Louis Murr and Percy Roberts catalogs.
