Firework season is upon us. If you have a dog that is scared, please call your vet today to get meds to calm them or make a plan for them to be where they can’t hear them. More dogs get lost around this holiday than any other time. Don’t take a chance. Leave your dog at home instead of taking to any festivities where they could get scared and run off.

I cannot imagine the wild ride this dog went on but this is a great testimony for this crate. This tornado came while many were at work and the house he was in was leveled. This dog Rotwieler) survived with no injuries. It is an Alcatraz crate.

Sad update: We lost baby girl "Honey" last night. She started having seizures, her gums turned pale and she went lethargic. Her foster (a veterinarian) thinks she had a brain bleed. We knew when taking her that she was a long shot for survival, but we wanted to give her every chance. She knew love for 5 days and was acting like a normal puppy up until last night. We had consulted a neurologist on Monday and he had told us that to get a shunt was nearly impossible as he hasn't been able to get one in almost 2 years due to Covid and all available shunts going to human children. He told us that IF we had been able to get one it would have cost $10-12K and the surgery would be another $5K and that 30% of them fail. So, we wouldn't have been able to do that surgery anyway. RIP Honey. You mattered. Thank you to everyone who donated to her care.

New intake with Nebraska Boston Terrier-French Bulldog Rescue. Nebraska Humane Society notified rescue of this sweet little hydrocephalus girl needing a rescue to take her. She was dropped off at the shelter as a “stray”…yeah, right. She is around 6 weeks old. Anyway, we are going to do what we can to help her survive. She is already with our veterinarian.

If your dog is going to be outside at all on the warmer days, know how fast heat stroke can happen. With our brachycephalic breeds heat stroke can happen even if it doesn't seem that it is hot enough to happen.

Know the Signs Heatstroke:
*Excessive panting or drooling
*Discomfort
*Reddened gums
*Vomiting
*Diarrhea
*Disorientation
*Weakness or collapse
*Unconsciousness
*Seizures
If you notice these symptoms call your veterinarian immediately. Heatstroke can be fatal.

If You Suspect Your Pet is Suffering From Heatstroke:
*Get your pet out of direct sunlight and into the shade or a place with circulating air. Air conditioning is preferred.
*Give cool, but not cold water. Do not force them to drink.
*Pour cool water over your pet’s coat to cool them externally or place a towel on their back and continue to soak the towel with water.
*Take their temperature every five minutes, continuing water-cooling until their temperature drops below 103°F.
*****Take your pet to the vet as soon as possible.
Many pets need to be stabilized with oxygen and IV fluids, as well as examined for organ injury. Dogs and cats that have suffered heatstroke are prone to experiencing it again.

26/07/2023

With the extreme heat happening in our area and many areas around the country, Please Keep your dogs safe...especially our brachycephalic breeds!

Keep Your Pet Safe From the Heat
Dial thermometer display 120 degrees Fahrenheit
Never leave your pet in the car.

Even in the shade, the temperature inside a car can quickly soar to dangerous levels. Leaving the windows open has little to no effect on how hot it is inside the car. Even if the temperature outside is only 70°, the temperature inside the car may be 20 degrees hotter. On an 85° day, it only takes 10 minutes for the inside of the car to reach 102°!
Be mindful of the weather.

Dogs can overheat very quickly and can suffer from heatstroke. During very hot and humid days, it's best to limit outside activity to the early morning hours. Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds and pets with thick or dark-colored coats are more susceptible to heatstroke. Elderly or overweight pets should be kept inside in air-conditioning. And, pets with heart or lung diseases may be less tolerant of the heat.

Watch out for their paws.

Pavement and asphalt get incredibly hot on summer days and can quickly burn your pet's feet. To be safe stay on dirt trails, grass, or sand if possible. Check if the pavement temperature is dangerous for your pet by holding the backside of you hand to the pavement for at least 5 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws.

Keep a watchful eye and hydrate.
Make sure your dog has had a chance to drink water before going outside and always has access to fresh, clean water. Dehydration can occur quickly on hot or humid days. Take a portable water bowl if you plan to spend a lot of time in the sun. Also, be sure to check on your dog for signs of pain and heat exhaustion.

Lather up.

Believe it or not, pets are susceptible to sunburns. If you're taking them outside on a sunny day, be sure to apply sunscreen to both yourself and your pet if your they have shorter hair or a light-colored coat. Make sure to only use sunscreens that are specifically designed for your pet.

Use caution around pools.

Pools may offer a good way for you to cool off, but not all pets are naturally good swimmers. Introduce your pet to water gradually and never leave them unattended around a pool.

Dogs are instinctively flight animals. In other words, they'll run and hide when they're scared, not face the mysterious loud noises coming from the sky. Please take a moment to read through the six security measures below to ensure your pets remains safe during the holiday.

1.) Take your dog for a walk before the festivities begin. A tired dog is a more relaxed dog.

2.) Don't expose pets to any new experiences on the Fourth of July. Stick to your daily routine, walking routes and feeding schedule to keep their stress-levels low.

3.) If you’re staying in with your pets, remain calm as the fireworks begin. Our pets pick up on our emotional cues, so maintaining a calm presence will help them follow your lead.

4.) Make sure your dog's tags are secure, easy-to-read, and up-to-date (including microchip information). Accidents unfortunately do happen and if your pet were to get out, you want to maximize your odds of having them returned.

5.) Please keep your pets at home. While it can be difficult to resist their sad eyes and tempting to include them in the celebration, your home is the safest place for your dog. It’s also where they will feel the most comfortable.

6.) Hosting a gathering? Be very aware of the exits. Your guests won’t be looking out for your pets. Consider placing them in a location where outside doors aren't accessible. Make sure all windows and doors are tightly secured. Additionally, consider placing a note on the front door to remind guests about the animal's presence. They can be especially sneaky and quick when frightened.

Update on Thor! Already looking better than his intake photo (attached at the end). Three and a half days in rescue with some good nutrition and TLC has done wonders for our boy. He has gone from a 2 out of 9 body score to a 4 out of 9. His skin is already looking better too. He is a happy boy and his foster (vet) said he is very well mannered. Thank you to everyone who has donated toward his care!

⚠️ Warning PSA: ⚠️
I am a foster for NBTR. I would like to warn all pet owners, especially small dog owners. My personal dog was a Boston Terrier. She was given a Dentley’s Exotics dog chew. Jozie started choking, we were unable to save her and she crossed over the rainbow bridge.
