See-Ya! 💚🍀
The blower might not be her favorite part of bath day .. but she still loves me
💋
Training can be done all day long. The biggest thing that I see “pet dogs” struggle with is their lack of impulse control. If you take just a little bit of time throughout the day to help your dog practice patience, all of your training will start to show steady improvement.
We know who the carnivore is in this family … and Ferguson is probably going to have a lot of gas tonight lol 😆💨
IGP Retrieve Over Jump
Well, my camera wasn’t set up wide enough for the pick up and delivery, but … I still appreciate how nice his form is clearing the 3+ foot jump.
Learning to jump like this takes a lot of education for a dog. Just because a dog “can jump high” doesn’t mean that dog understands automatically how to stride its pace and “collect” / leave the ground at the right moment with the right force to launch and land safely.
We begin teaching the jump with any height only AFTER a dog’s growth plates have closed. We start with very very low jumps and teach using a method that involves stride regulator bars that help create a visual for the dog as well as establish muscle memory over many many reps at lower and gradually increasing heights.
Adding in the skills of the retrieve & delivery as well as incorporating “no-no” drills along the way.
The finished products takes a rather long time to develop. Something that looks as simple as a “dog jumping” is a rather complex training program.
The growling game.
Oh wait … you are off camera 🤣 … come a little closer.
This game sounds “mean” but it’s a healthy bonding and "forceful" drive building tool.
In the end… I “let him” wil about 90% of the time (in actuality this dog could kick my butt all day long ha ha ). But it’s the fact they he loves to come back to me for more … more … more … and we channel that energy into his training.

Practicing for AKC Open A trial …
We have been working so hard on the skills needed for the AKC Open obedience title. Today Aldrich showed me some powerful understanding of these skills.
I don’t share these posts to “show off” or brag.. I share this journey to emphasize how MUCH WORK it takes to train a dog.
Hours of dedication, planning, and #repetition repetition repetition repetition .
A trained dog doesn’t happen overnight.
It is a slow and detailed journey with lots of detours along the way.

41 days until our first Open trial.
The broad jump has been a troubled spot but we have done reps/ reps / reps every single day this week.
Today I took away his target pole! And I’m so excited to see this progress!!!
Mike Lardy (arguably one of the best retriever trainers in history that set the standard for the world of field trials) said once at a seminar I attended words that I will always remember: “When you are trying to “fix” one thing in training .. another area will often suffer for a while.
This is true **no matter the sport*** no matter the dog.
Have patience, do the reps, be clear in your timing and make small goals to reach the big picture.
Here is a clip from this morning’s session (blooper / mistake included) .. no where near perfection but I’m super happy with the progress !!!
** edit to mention I am doing both sides of the jump to proof that he takes the center line and also because this dog has trouble with right hand turns sometimes so my process started with the idea that he needs to turn in the direction I am. We started this with pole wraps and no jump.
See Ya!
Learning to honor. Working with her momma Raglan
Another figure 8 heeling exercise from this morning …
Only this time I made a VERY conscious decision during the drill to work on something else ..
Pop quiz:
What was that other thing I worked on during this drill !?
Working on figure 8’s this morning .. this has been a struggle for us getting in sync for this exercise. The dog has to speed up around the outside turn and decelerate for the inside.
I am NOT a dancer (🤡super uncoordinated) so being consistent with my shoulders and my two left feet 🦶) is usually the reason for our lack of fluidity in our heel work.
And so we practice together …. Reps, reps, reps, reps ..
📣and also … I do ALL of my exercises *****WITHOUT my dog ******* 📣
Heel work is very much like dancing and in dance (what little I do know of dancing 💃🏿) someone must LEAD!
How can I lead my dog if I don’t know the steps !? I am working on becoming a better handler so that I can make us a stronger TEAM 💪🏼
Working on our AKC style retrieves .. Aldrich has a much better grip with the larger IGP dumbbell. But I’m pleased with the way this is coming together. I’m blessed to have a versatile dog that loves to train.
Now … if the SC. Heat would cooperate and offer us some cooler less humid days we would be all set!!!
