🎉 Paws up, it’s International Cat Day! 🎉

Let's be honest, cats secretly run our lives. From waking us up at 3 AM for no reason to giving us that "you know nothing, human" look, they keep things interesting. 😹

Here at HomeoPet, we get it. Our feline friends might think they're royalty, but sometimes even the king or queen of the house needs a little TLC. Whether it's calming down after the zoomies or helping with those hairball issues, we've got natural remedies to keep your kitty in tip-top shape.

Celebrate today by giving your cat an extra treat, a new toy, or just let them rule the house (as if they don't already).

Some great information that's important to share!

LESSON FOR THE DAY ~ Always place injured birds that can't stand up by themselves in a "doughnut" and place them in a box. Do not give them any food or water.
This bird is a Northern Mockingbird. It was found on the ground last night and was laying on its back. The person did put the bird in a box but it could not stand and was left laying on its side. The finder also dripped some water down the bird's mouth before calling for help. Not a good thing to do.
While on the phone, I had them make a nice "doughnut" for the bird so it could be in an upright natural position. After they did that they said the bird looked more comfortable and alert.
Unfortunately the mocker came in "mouth breathing." It is hard to say if the mouth breathing is from being aspirated when it was given water or if it was from the impact.
SO - Please keep birds supported upright in a box (as shown in the photo below) not laying on their side. Birds have air sacs along the sides of their body that expand and contract when the the bird breathes. Injured birds should be gently supported so air sacs can expand and contract and the bird can breathe easily. Do not try to give any food or water - unless you are instructed otherwise by your rehabber. You can very easily aspirate an injured bird and that alone can kill a bird. Help save a bird, feel free to share.

Who doesn't think of bunnies at Easter time? 🐰

As Easter hops into view, we want to take a quick look at a pet that has become a symbol of this holiday and share 9 facts to consider before adding a bunny to your family.

Pet rabbits...

1️⃣ live a long life

Rabbits have a long lifespan compared to other small animals such as rats or hamsters. Depending on the breed, your bunny could live up to 15 years!

2️⃣ love their indoor homes

Bunnies do best when they’re kept indoors in an area of the home where people hang out — ideally in a large, enriched enclosure or with a free run. That way, they can become part of the family where they belong.

3️⃣ need a house cleaner

Whether you keep your bunny in an enclosure or a free run, clean their habitat regularly. Toilet spots, urine and faeces should be removed daily.

4️⃣ have busy minds

Rabbits are smart, so it’s important to keep your rabbit entertained. Rabbits love chewing which also helps them to wear down their constantly growing teeth.

5️⃣ eat more than just carrots

Rabbits are strict vegetarians, and love a balanced diet based on forage. Rabbits have sensitive digestive systems, so keep it simple: low in sugar and high in fibre! Introduce new foods gradually to avoid upsetting their digestive system.

6️⃣ need to be handled gently
Rabbits are fragile and easily scared. Mishandling can cause them to lash out. Always fully support their body when picking them up to avoid back injuries. Never grab their ears - it's painful!

7️⃣ need care that can include vet visits
Get to know your rabbit's normal behavior. Any unusual signs like lethargy, hunching, or appetite loss require a vet visit. Rabbits are prey animals, they instinctively hide signs of illness. Watch for any changes in behavior, no matter how small!

8️⃣ require regular grooming

Regular brushing keeps your rabbit's fur clean and mat-free. Use a soft brush for the top coat and avoid brushing their face and belly.

9️⃣ need some-buddy to love

Rabbits love company. However, as not all rabbits get along a guinea pig can be a great companion too.

AND Bunnies can be adopted!

Many shelters and special rescue services have adorable bunnies (and other pets) for adoption. Consider giving them a chance when looking for a new housemate.

Happy National Puppy Day 🐾

We would like to (re-) introduce you to Maui!

Maui was mentioned many times in our last post, our ‘meet Team HomeoPet’ Q&A with Aindriu Farrington, Finance & Operations Manager here at HomeoPet.

Maui came into Andrew and his wife Katie’s life 6 years ago. Although Maui isn’t quite a puppy anymore, Katie, Aindriu and Maui became an even bigger family when baby Jamie entered their lives in 2022.

Even though Maui is 6 years old now, he still has many puppy-esque moments and he is a firm favorite with the whole HomeoPet Team. We have to admit that a little less work gets done when Maui pays a visit to the office!

- Meet our Team - Jodi King 🙋🏼‍♀️ & Aindriu Farrington 🙋🏻

We’re starting our new ‘meet Team HomeoPet’ series by giving you a little glimpse into our 2 fantastic team members attending Global Pet Expo in Florida this week – Jodi and Andriu.

Jodi is our International Sales Manager at HomeoPet and she has been an integral part of our team for an impressive 18 years now!

Q: Do you have pets and, if so, what type of animal are they?
A: I have 2 Blue Heeler dogs. I also have 60 long-horn cattle and about 50-60 pigs, though I suppose they’re not pets! I have a working farm with many animals, so life is busy. But that’s the way I like it!

Q: What are their names?
A: Luna and Blue. Many long horns have names too, but we’d be here all day if I listed them all!

Q: What's the most spontaneous thing you've ever done?
A: I don’t tend to do many spontaneous things – it’s hard to when there are so many animals to look after! Probably the most interesting I’ve done recently was taking a 6-7 week cross-country trip driving across the US and seeing stores. I left on the 6th of January and didn’t get home until Feb 20th, hitting 21 states! It was fantastic to see and meet so many people face to face and see what makes their business unique. I can’t wait to do it again.

Q: What do you like most about working at HomeoPet?
A: Meeting people, helping animals, helping stores and training stores on the benefits of a more natural approach to pet health care.

Aindriu is our Finance & Operations Manager at HomeoPet and has been with us for 9 years, just shy of a decade!

Aindriu is the Irish Gaelic form of the English name Andrew and he is known to answer to both :) We also asked Aindriu some questions to give you some insights into what makes him tick:

Q: Do you have pets and, if so, what type of animal are they?
A: I do indeed, I’m the lucky owner of a big Bernese Mountain dog.

Q: What is his name?
A: Maui

Q: What is the most unusual talent Maui has?
A: He has an envious ability to sleep anywhere and at any time. There’s a chance he’s got narcolepsy.

Q: What is your favorite animal?
A: Hands down Bernese Mountain dogs.‌

Q: What's the most spontaneous thing you've ever done?
A: That has to be when I got Maui on a whim. My wife Katie was shopping for food for her sister’s reptile at the time ... she locked eyes with him and it was love at first sight! I couldn’t say no!

Q: What’s your absolute pet p*eve?
A: Being intolerant to gluten (I married an Italian!!)

Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The very dynamic working environment and solving everyday problems with the help of a fantastic team.

Meet Aindriu and Jodi at the Global Pet Expo booth 875 this week!

It’s St Patrick’s Day and a time to celebrate not just the rich history and vibrant culture of Ireland, but also the spirit of togetherness and joy it brings to people around the world. At HomeoPet we’re proud of our Irish roots and the journey that has brought us to where we are today.

We are a US owned family business, but our origins are rooted deep in the stunningly beautiful South West of Ireland. From those wind-swept early days in the mid 1990’s to our present status as a global leader in natural pet care, our journey has been one of passion, dedication, and a deep-seated belief in the power of nature to heal and provide.

Our incredible team are the heartbeat of HomeoPet, a diverse group of inspiring individuals united by a shared mission to make a difference in the lives of pets and their owners.

This weekend is a perfect time to remember that, just like the diverse tapestry of Ireland, the pet world is wonderfully varied and full of life. Our commitment to improving the health and happiness of animals is fueled by the same passion and warmth that this holiday embodies.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, from the team at HomeO’Pet!

Superheros don’t always wear capes!

- Let’s honor our heroes on four legs and thank them for their services today on National K9 Veteran Day 🐶

American Kennel Club dog owners were instrumental in forming a civilian organization called Dogs for Defense in 1942 with the intent to train dogs as sentries for supply depots along the coasts during World War II. After hearing of these efforts, a pilot program was officially approved by the US Army and the first K9 corps was established and officially recognized in the U.S. on March 13, 1942, hence why March 13th is National K9 Veteran Day.

Nowadays, military working dogs play a crucial role in armed forces globally.

Here are 6 interesting facts about our K9 soldiers you may not know:

The earliest recorded use of canines in combat was by Alyattes of Lydia against the Cimmerians around 600 BC.

Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, houses the 341st Training Squadron, where all military working dogs and their handlers undergo training.

In Holmdel, New Jersey, stands the United States War Dogs Memorial, featuring a bronze statue depicting a Vietnam War soldier and his dog, honoring America's war dogs throughout history.

The Military Working Dog Teams National Monument, located at Lackland Air Force Base, is a U.S. National Monument.

The Department of Defense Military Working Dog Veterinary Service, a subordinate unit of the Army Public Health Center, provides healthcare for approximately 900 dogs/puppies at Lackland Air Force Base.

Lackland Air Force Base hosts a research and development program focused on enhancing body armor and gas masks for military working dogs.

Thank you for your services 🐾

With chick season fast approaching, we thought we'd share a fun fact:
Did you know that birds show a full range of emotions? Fear, anger, disgust, surprise, sadness, happiness, jealousy, sympathy, grief, guilt, pride - and the list just goes on! Birds that mate for life also demonstrate love through providing protection, sharing food, preening, and snuggling. Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'bird brain'! 🐥🦆

As we approach the end of National Pet Dental Health Month, we've a Fun Fact for you – Did you know that horses’ teeth grow continuously throughout his or her life? Consequently, they may develop problems such as sharp edges, malocclusion (misalignment of the teeth), or periodontal disease, which can cause discomfort, difficulty chewing, and weight loss. Regular dental exams and floatings (filing down of sharp edges) by an equine dental technician or veterinarian are essential to help prevent these issues and maintain the horse's overall health. 🐴🐴
