Dog trainers kids…

Me: did you muzzle the unicorn?
Kid: yeah, he’s a little nervous and we need to protect him from making a mistake at the doctor.

Oh, can’t argue with that. 😂🤷‍♀️✌️

Dog training classes, obedience, manners, and sit/down/stay do not address reactivity, fear, anxiety, or aggression. Just as teaching someone to swim differs from helping them overcome their fear of water. While swimming lessons can build confidence, they alone won’t change how the learner feels about water.

Obedience training builds basic skills, but behavior modification addresses deep-rooted emotional responses like fear, anxiety, and aggression. Learn which approach your dog needs.

I was looking for my favorite handling resources for a client and remembered this gem. It offers such clear examples of dog body language, with expert narration. A fantastic resource—thank you, Dogkind LLC.

We can train dogs, but DNS settings are a bridge too far.

The Caswell APS is in urgent need of assistance. These small shelters play a vital role in protecting animal populations, and it's heartbreaking to hear that their team is feeling so disheartened. Even if you're not in a position to adopt a pet, please consider sharing their post. Raising awareness about the challenges these shelters encounter is incredibly important.
We so believe in the mission of the shelters that we want to offer a 10% discount for all new adoptions from any animal shelter. This promotion starts today and will run through September. We believe that every animal deserves a loving home, and hope this discount can make it easier for more animals to find their families.

We need our Facebook Family more than ever. 6 new stray dogs came in the week. No reclaims. Adoptions are at a standstill still. Rescues are few and far between. Most are full. Some rescues aren’t even answering us when we beg for help. We have a lot of amazing dogs and cats looking for homes. Sadly there are not enough homes out there. People call everyday with dogs they want to surrender, some with litters of puppies, cats they want trapped…it never ends. Our animals are stressed. Our staff is stressed. Our volunteers are stressed. We try to stay positive and upbeat while we help our animals, but we feel helpless, depressed, sad, worried, hopeless.

Please help us spread the word about our wonderful animals looking for furever homes. If you have ever thought about fostering, now is the time! If you have rescue contacts, please share them with us. Please continue sharing our posts. The more people who see our posts the better! We have so many dogs living in crates now. Come walk dogs on the nature trails next to the shelter, they love the break from the loud shelter environment. Come take pictures and videos of our animals for social media. Help us redesign our webpage. There are so many volunteer opportunities at APS! We need all the help we can get.

We have not euthanized adoptable animals for space, but we are at the point where we have no other choice. We have no more room. Animals in our care are loved by staff and volunteers. We work with our animals. We get to know our animals. We treat them like they are our own furbabies. We are all heartbroken it has come to this.

On a personal note. I am heartbroken. I love this shelter, our animals, staff and volunteers. So many wonderful things happen at APS, but I have never felt so hopeless about our future. If you love APS like I do, please help us spread the word about our wonderful animals who need homes.

Thank you all for your continued support of APS and our mission to providing medical care, comfort and compassion to stray, surrendered, sick, neglected and abused animals in Caswell County. Our goal is not to euthanize an adoptable animal including emergency medical cases.

~ Jenn Zattiero, APS President

No dog in the history of the world has ever pondered the ethics of stealing a sandwich off of a plate or felt guilty about barking at 3 AM. Dogs don’t have a moral compass as we understand it. They simply act on instinct and learned behaviors, and consequences.
Your dog’s world revolves around, well, your dog. They’re not altruists; they’re looking out for number one. Do they love you? Yes, of course they do. But they’ll take your sandwich.
Leave food unattended? It’s gone. Door left open? They’re on an adventure. Dogs naturally live by the idea of ‘seize the day’. They don’t worry about tomorrow - they enjoy each moment as it comes. Sounds great until you’re chasing your dog through the neighborhood yards in your skivvies.

Perhaps we love dogs not in spite of these traits, but because of them. They remind us of our own basic instincts and the joy of living simply. They don’t judge us by human standards, and in return, we accept them for who they are – opportunistic, self-centered, and all.
So the next time your dog barks at 3 AM , remember that your dog is simply being a dog. And isn’t that why we invited them into our lives in the first place?

Rather than assuming your dog is being a jerk to get back at you etc., focus on positive reinforcement for desired behaviors and preventing unwanted behaviors through management and training.

Here's what one happy client had to say:

"I loved working with Good Human Dog Training! They were very responsive to me and my dog's needs. For me, my dog (rescued pit mix) was overwhelmed in the group setting. Our instructor, Jen, was great at providing resources to help understand the behavior. She offered different options to support my dog and her learning. By the end of it, she was able to participate in class fully! I highly recommend their services."

About the trainer

Jennifer has been involved in the dog world for more than 15 years. Her formal education includes certifications from both CATCH and the highly-regarded Karen Pryor Academy but she credits the dogs she’s worked with over the years for teaching her the most important concepts of behavior and training. Jennifer remains informed of the latest research and training techniques and continuing education by attending workshops and seminars. You can find more about certifications for dog trainers here.

Her goal is to provide families with effective, professional and humane training for their dogs - training that makes life easier, by teaching people to help their dogs navigate the structure of normal family life. She’ll evaluate your unique circumstances with care and compassion to determine effective strategies to ease stress and improve safety for every situation and every family.

Jennifer is committed to training without the use of fear, pain, or coercion. She believes in rewarding desired behaviors instead waiting for dogs to make mistakes. By creating an environment in which dogs are eager to learn, and incorporating reinforcement into everyday life, good behavior becomes a habit for both the dog and the human. When she's not training dogs, Jennifer is still a pretty good human. She enjoys spending time hiking with her wife and daughter, reading (about behavior and Goodnight Moon), keeping bees, making jewelry, and cross stitching.
