Elegant platinum dragon Koi arrived in-store
Elegant platinum dragon Koi that just arrived in-store from our small farm. It's hard to grasp the size of these beauties from the video, but they are just short of 18 inches (45 cm). It's our first batch in-store this year as we have been closed since January due to virus restrictions. It's warms to get the store stocked up and slowly get back to normality.
Genetically modified fluorescent green Zebra danio
Genetically modified fluorescent green Zebra danio (Danio rerio) managed to get into the sump in the quarantine room. At least their colour makes them easier to see in low light 🤗.
Beautiful male Nothobranchius rachovii
Beautiful male Nothobranchius rachovii back in stock. Such a shame their lifespan is rarely more than a year. Reminds me of an Irish saying my grandma would say "The brightest stars burn the quickest but are the most beautiful."
Blue Paradise Fish Macropodus Opercularis
Stunning male blue Paradise Fish variant (Macropodus Opercularis) are commonly referred to as the Chinese fighting fish in Asia. Similar to their cousin the Betta, the male’s aggression grows as it reaches maturity, however, their aggression level is not as intense as the male Betta splendens. Although adaptable to various temperatures Paradise fish thrive in cooler water around 22 degrees Celsius, keeping them at constant warmer temperatures can be detrimental to their health and can shorten their lifespan.
Freshwater Red Crystal Parrot Fish
What do you all think of this variation of parrotfish 🦜 ? It's called red crystal ... I'm not the biggest fan of parrotfish but you can't knock them from lack of personality that's for sure.
Genetically modified glow danio
The last of the GM long-finned Danio rerio, they were very popular with our young customers and would definitely consider getting them back in stock again in the future. Personally, I am still not sold on the GM Danio rerio, the colours are lost on me. However, one thing I can say for them, they have introduced a lot of new young fishkeepers to the hobby. The majority that started out with the GM Danio rerio from our retail store, have all come back looking to expand into different species, get bigger aquariums and are constantly spending time in our instore aquatic library researching. It's heartwarming to see.
Back picking up some Clarkii morphs at a local farm. At this size aggression is limited to dominant and passive signals, a group of juvenile crayfish can establish a hierarchy within minutes for a coexistence. Mature Crayfish, on the other hand, will fight for dominance in a more aggressive manner, in the wild, the passive crayfish would scurry off and find new territory, but in an aquarium, the passive crayfish may not be able to distance itself from the victor which can result in death. This is why we always recommend crayfish to be kept on their own or a minimum of 15 gals per crayfish.
Fish police, please note that this is a viewing tank at a farm. They take some crayfish from a pond which is placed inside a viewing tank so the customer can select the ones they want. They are kept in these conditions for no more than an hour.
Dario Dario or Badis badis Bengalensis
Dario Dario or Badis badis Bengalensis, depending on who you talk too lol. These little guys have been passed around different classifications since 1822 but were given their own group Badidae finally in 1968. Believe it or not, they belong to the suborder Anabantoids the same as Bettas and Gourami.
As cute as they are, the males are extremely territorial and can go as far as killing another male in the surrounding area. Success in keeping more than one male in an aquarium can be achieved by ensuring there is enough room for each male to set up shop and boundaries can not be crossed.
You can already see the males in this tank starting to show dominance by displaying intense colour. I told my friend to remove the small cave and keep the tank bare to eliminate any territorial dispute's. If you ever get a chance to keep these little nippers I highly recommend them, they are less than 2cm but such a fascinating fish to keep.
These genetically modified zebera danios (Danio Rerio) go nuts for live brine shrimp 😊. We feed all our fish live foods, such as brine shrimp, tubifex and bloodworm at least 2 or 3 times a week to supplement their diet.
They are moving so fast, like little green lighting bolts ⚡⚡⚡.

BEDTIME !!!
An interesting thing about bobtails is they are actually squid but their appearance is more cuttlefish like. Even though it appears large in the video, this little adult Bobtail is just under 3cm.
Bobtails would be one of the more popular molluscs in the Asian marine aquarium trade due to their undeniable cuteness. But like most molluscs, their lifespan is incredibly short with most dying within 3 - 10 months. However, a pair can provide the aquarist with generations of bobtails for years. The only thing is just don't get too attached.

One of the most common questions we have received is does the fry have the same extravagant colour as the parent?
The answer is yes, as you can see from the fry pulled up from a breeding pond along with a female. Even freshly hatched genetically modified danios have the green pigment. Some people get genetically modified fish mixed up with colour dyed fish. These fish are created by inserting a new fluorescent gene from the likes of jellyfish into the plasmid which then is carried through on to the next generation like any other gene code.
Not all the fry will be green this is because some of the danios still carry the original colour gene even though they are green. So, you normally end up with a small percentage of normal coloured danios. However, even though they are normal in appearance they may carry the fluorescent gene and pass it on to another generation.
Note, these dainos are bred in Asia and not in the USA. As some of you may already know that fluorescent genetically modified danios are trademarked in the USA and breeding them is illegal. However, the patent does not extend to Asia at this time. This is why you would often see other glow species in aquatic stores that are not sold by the official patent owners in the US as they are imported from the likes of Thailand, where they are free to breed for sale.
Does anyone keep fluorescent genetically modified fish in their aquarium or would consider it?

Bright orange genetically engineered fluorescent long fined Zebra Danio (Danio rerio).
Although prolific in the hobby, they were never intended for the ornamental fish trade. They were first created over 20 years ago by Professor Gong Zhiyuan in Singapore for the purpose of testing for pollutants in waterways, where the fish would glow if pollutants were detected.
Since the fish are genetically engineered the colour change is done by inserting the fluorescent gene from invertebrates such as jellyfish & anemones into the fish embryo. The gene is then carried through to the next generations.
What do you all think? Do you like them or do you find them too extreme?
Check out the colour on these hemioliopterus. This morph used to be fairly common but has slowly been disappearing in the market making them triple in value. The yellow tones are more popular in Asia than full platinum as yellow resembles gold, gold equals wealth in Feng shui.
Note to the fish tank police, this is a temporary viewing tank to check for any physical damages or noticeable ailments before they are released into a quarantine pond.

**WATCH TO THE END**
Yes, that is an Arowana with Longfin Batfish (Platax teira), your eyes are not playing tricks on you. Batfish are saltwater but are commonly found in the Asian aquarium trade as freshwater, similar to Bumblebee groupers (Epinephelus lanceolatus). Longfin Batfish are a Euryhaline species and can adapt to different levels of salinity. In their juvenile stage, they can be found in brackish estuaries or hanging around mangroves. Like the Bumblebee groupers found in the trade, the batfish are bred in brackish conditions and reared in freshwater. They do surprisingly well and unlike some other Euryhaline species found in the trade, the batfish do not seem to lose the ability with age and are quite comfortable in freshwater conditions.
Freshwater Longfin Batfish (Platax teira) has been in the Asian aquatic trade for about 3 years now, so I expect them to hit the western aquatic trade in the next 24 months.
What do you all think would you keep a freshwater Batfish if you had the opportunity?
