Terminating some summer sown cover crop before it sets seed. Will leave this on the bed to break down, keeping the soil covered for the winter. In spring, we’ll rake it off or plant right into the debris.

A friend who was up high in one of the farm trees, helping to trim them up, caught a great picture of the farm. In front of those tunnels, we’ve torn out all our summer crops and will be cover cropping the beds for the fall and early winter.

But first we raked up all the crop debris for a little in-field composting. The tarp will help cook the compost, as well as encourage any w**d seed to germinate. We’ll pull the tarp back soon to sow the cover crop.

P.S. look at those potatoes!!!! 😍🌈🥔

Beaverland Farms

Beaverland Farms is a 2-acre homestead and working farm located in the Brightmoor, a northwest neighborhood in Detroit. We grow nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables raised in natural systems that value biological mechanisms and life processes over the use of chemical inputs like fertilizers and pesticides. We seek to regenerate the landscape in Brightmoor by emulating ecosystem functions with symbiotic farm enterprises which are economically and environmentally resilient, and which add stability and security to our neighborhood and large metropolitan community. The farm is a part of a network of growers and business in the city. We hope to leverage the resources of our farm to empower ourselves and others in developing and undertaking further regenerative enterprises in the region.

All decisions and modes of production at Beaverland Farms are weighed against our holistic management policy, which emphasizes:

REGENERATIVE ENTERPRISES

Through the farm enterprises we work to create beneficial environmental change that not only sustains but builds our local resource base. By designing systems and enterprises which facilitate life processes we enable perennial, evolving systems which improve production capacity over time.
