One of the most powerful lessons in veterinary medicine doesn’t come from textbooks or CE—it comes from being a pet owner.
Recently, I found myself on the other side of the exam table when my dogs needed emergency care. And despite years of experience as a veterinarian, I felt the same fear, uncertainty, and vulnerability our clients feel every day.
This is something I emphasize when mentoring early-career veterinarians:
✨ Being a pet owner is a masterclass in client communication.
When we experience:
waiting for updates
trying to absorb complex medical information
feeling guilt, fear, and hope all at once
…it changes how we show up as clinicians.
For new graduate veterinarians especially, moments like this build empathy, strengthen client relationships, and improve communication in the exam room. Technical skills matter—but connection, clarity, and compassion are what clients remember.
If you’re a new grad: pay attention to how it feels to be the client.
If you’re a mentor: help your mentees reflect on these moments.
They’re shaping the kind of veterinarian you become.
