Hyperkalemia makes us think urinary obstruction — and that instinct matters. But this was a female cat with a small bladder, which didn’t fit a lower urinary obstruction.

Imaging told the real story: bilateral ureteroliths causing obstruction at the ureters.

Takeaway:
Hyperkalemia is a clue, not a diagnosis. If the physical exam doesn’t match your assumption, pause and look upstream.

A classic NAVLE question — and a really practical one for general practice. Being able to recognize common masses like lipomas on cytology can help you give clients answers faster, reduce anxiety, and keep costs down when it’s appropriate. Pattern recognition and communication both matter.

💭 Ever find yourself wondering, “Is this it?”

In our latest blog, we explore how to recognize when it’s time to make a change and how to listen to the quiet data that often speaks louder than production numbers or five-star reviews.

Whether you’re feeling unseen, disconnected, or simply different than you used to at work, this post is a reminder that those feelings matter. Change doesn’t always mean leaving, but it does mean paying attention.

Many early-career veterinarians are focused on building their skills, but are less aware of financial literacy.

Vet students + new grads—this one hits. 👀🐾

Amber talks about something we don’t say enough:
You can learn communication in lectures…
but you really learn it in practice.

Sometimes that means:
➡️ Saying the wrong thing
➡️ Watching a client shut down
➡️ Realizing you used way too much medical jargon

And then doing it better next time.

Communication isn’t about sounding smart—it’s about helping clients actually understand.

💬 What’s one client conversation that taught you more than any lecture?

RVTs—career growth doesn’t have to be one-lane only. 👀🐾

In this podcast clip, RVT Phil talks about:
✔️ Specialty training (VTS)
✔️ Non-clinical paths like veterinary insurance
✔️ Building a long, sustainable career as an RVT

You can grow clinically or non-clinically—and both are valid, needed, and valuable in vet med.

This isn’t about “leaving” the profession.
It’s about finding the lane that fits you.

💬 Are you more drawn to:
1️⃣ VTS / specialty training
2️⃣ Non-clinical roles (insurance, industry, education)
3️⃣ Still figuring it out

👇 Tell us in the comments.

One of the most powerful lessons in veterinary medicine doesn’t come from textbooks or CE—it comes from being a pet owner.

Recently, I found myself on the other side of the exam table when my dogs needed emergency care. And despite years of experience as a veterinarian, I felt the same fear, uncertainty, and vulnerability our clients feel every day.

This is something I emphasize when mentoring early-career veterinarians:
✨ Being a pet owner is a masterclass in client communication.

When we experience:

waiting for updates

trying to absorb complex medical information

feeling guilt, fear, and hope all at once

…it changes how we show up as clinicians.

For new graduate veterinarians especially, moments like this build empathy, strengthen client relationships, and improve communication in the exam room. Technical skills matter—but connection, clarity, and compassion are what clients remember.

If you’re a new grad: pay attention to how it feels to be the client.
If you’re a mentor: help your mentees reflect on these moments.

They’re shaping the kind of veterinarian you become.

Older cat. Big abscess. Mild anemia + leukocytosis.
If this were elective, we’d wait… but he was lethargic, painful, and not eating. This abscess needed to be drained.

We weighed the risks, communicated clearly, documented well—and he did great.
Real-life medicine isn’t perfect. It’s thoughtful. ❤️🩹🐾
