Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center Specializing in orthopedic, soft tissue and neurosurgery for companion animals.
(43)

The Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center (DVSC) specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of surgical diseases in dogs and cats. We serve the pet owners and referring veterinarians of Collin County, Dallas County, Tarrant County, and beyond. When family veterinarians become concerned that a pet needs specialty or surgical treatment, they refer the animal to one of our five locations. While your pet

is in our care, your own veterinarian will remain the primary-care doctor. We will communicate with your veterinarian by phone, letter, fax, and/or e-mail as necessary, detailing your visit and our recommendations for your pet’s future care.

From our family to yours, we wish you a happy and safe Labor Day!

Pool days are the best days! While a day at the pool should be fun and refreshing, we should always be prepared with these safety tips:

🐾 Limit access - Be sure to put a fence around a pool so your pet cannot fall in or jump in on their own.
🐾 Don’t let your pet drink chlorinated water - Always be sure to have fresh, clean water for your pets to keep them hydrated.
🐾 Keep an eye on pool toys - These toys are often choking hazards for pets.
🐾 Safely store pool chemicals - It is best to keep these chemicals out of reach.
🐾 Be aware - Pets can get overheated even when swimming. Always keep an eye on them and watch for any signs of this.
🐾 Many dogs love to swim, but some tire more easily than others. Consider having your dog wear a life jacket that is specifically made for animals.

We’re so happy to be able to share Tank’s story. Tank is one brave French Bulldog, who recently came through our doors in a dire situation. After a serious car accident, Tank was left with severe injuries to his leg and jaw. But thanks to the expertise and dedication of our veterinary team, the care of Tank's devoted parents, and Tank’s own fighting spirit, he underwent a successful surgery and was able to keep his leg.

Today, Tank is back to his energetic self, running around and living his best life with no signs of the trauma he endured. We wish all dogs were built like Tank, and he’s certainly living up to his name!

Pets can be curious, and sometimes that leads to swallowing indigestible objects which can result in a bowel or gastrointestinal obstruction.

The treatment for bowel obstruction can vary and depends on the severity of the condition. In some cases, a blockage may pass on its own. In others, surgery may be required.

Obstructions can be very serious and may even result in death, so it is important to see your veterinarian ASAP if you discover or suspect your pet swallowed something indigestible.

Little Texa came into DVSC after being referred by our friends at Little Elm Pet Clinic after having difficulties breathing. She was diagnosed with Laryngeal Paralysis, a condition in dogs and cats that results when the nerve that controls one of the muscles in the larynx (the cricoarytenoideus dorsalis (CAD) muscle) is not functioning. This muscle is responsible for opening the arytenoid cartilages of the larynx when an animal breathes so that air may pass easily into the trachea and down into the lungs. When the CAD muscle stops functioning due to the loss of nerve stimulation, the arytenoid cartilage in the larynx fails to open when the animal breathes, leading to obstruction of airflow.

Our surgeons were able to preform a Unilateral Arytenoid Lateralization (UAL) – also known as a “tie-back”. The UAL procedure involves tying heavy gauge sutures between the arytenoid and cricoid cartilages on one side of the larynx. This results in one side of the larynx being “tied open” so that airfow is less obstructed and the dog can breathe easier.

We are delighted to say that Texa's UAL and recovery went very well and she's enjoying the dog days of summer to the fullest! ❤️

We met Drax after a referral from our friends at Hurst Animal Clinic. Drax came to DVSC for a consultation on Brachycephalic Upper Airway Syndrome (BUAS)—a condition that affects breathing in breeds such as English Bulldogs, Mastiffs, and Pugs (to name a few). These breeds all have the appearance of a smushed in face, caused by variations of the skull bones, and can result in abnormalities of the respiratory system. This may lead to difficulty breathing, heat sensitivity, exercise intolerance, GI issues, and more.

We’re thrilled to share that Drax underwent surgery and is now on the path to a better quality of life!

Here’s what Drax’s dad had to say about his experience:
“From the moment we walked in, everyone was incredibly kind and supportive. The entire team made me and my dog feel at ease. They were quick to address any questions I had during recovery. I highly recommend DVSC for any pet surgery needs!”

We’re grateful for the opportunity to help Drax live his best life and are so glad to hear that his dad had a positive experience.

As summer heats up, it's crucial to keep an eye on our furry friends to ensure they stay safe and comfortable. High temperatures can be dangerous for pets, leading to heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses. Be on the lookout for these common signs of heatstroke and if you are at all in doubt, take your pet to the nearest emergency hospital.

Tucker is a 4-year-old Chug (a cross between a Chihuahua and a Pug) who was referred to us by our friends at Riverwalk Pet Hospital & Resort in Grapevine. Tucker had Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), which means an intervertebral disc in his spine ruptured, compressing his spinal cord. This is a devastating condition in dogs that can cause pain, sensation loss, and lifelong paralysis.

“Dr. Tichenor, Dr. Q, Angela (vet tech), and Jose exceeded any expectations we could possibly have in the circumstances we faced. Not only did they care for our pup like we would, but they extended love to us as well. Thank you, DVSC Grapevine, for going above and beyond! Your amazing service certainly did not go unnoticed!”

We are so happy that Tucker’s mom, Amy, trusted DVSC to perform a hemilaminectomy on Tucker’s T11-T13. This decompression surgery relieves pressure on the spinal cord and has a high success rate for alleviating symptoms and allowing patients to live happy lives.

We’re wishing Tucker a swift recovery and hope to follow up with his case in a few months to note his progress. 💙

If your pet does go missing, file a lost animal report with your local police department, post on community social media pages (such as Facebook or Nextdoor), check neighbors’ yards or video doorbell footage, scout local parks, and call animal shelters in your area.

Our team at DVSC is just the best!

When there was a need for a blood donation for a dog, Samantha, a technician at our Fort Worth location, stepped up in the most incredible way. She brought in her own pup, Dallas, to help save the day.❤️

We are so proud of our team and grateful for their dedication to helping animals in need. Thank you, Samantha, Courtney, and our hero Dallas, for showing what compassion looks like!

A hot tip for summer:
it only takes 6 minutes for a dog to overheat in a hot vehicle and face lifelong or fatal consequences. Pets can still overheat even when the windows are down, or even if the car is parked in a shaded area.

Our best advice is to not leave your dog in the car - take them with you or leave them at home with plenty of water and shade. They will happily greet you when you return! 😊

Meet our resilient patient, Franklin and his loving owner Jennifer! 🐾

Navigating the challenges of cancer-related issues in our beloved pets can be daunting, but within those moments of uncertainty, there shines a beacon of hope named Dr. Robert Radasch at DVSC.

Jennifer shares, "I have been a client of the DVSC three times, all for cancer-related issues. Dr. Robert Radasch is there, and that is all anyone needs to consider."

Dr. Radasch had previously cared for two osteosarcoma diagnoses Jennifer's Dobermans (Pete and Twist pictured). "He gave me time with my dogs where they were pain-free and lived normal lives for as long as possible. That was a gift."

Recently, Franklin underwent surgery for soft tissue sarcoma, showcasing Dr. Radasch's unwavering dedication to improving outcomes and ensuring every pet receives the best chance at a vibrant future.

We know them and we love them, but sometimes our short-nosed pups need some extra attention. Brachycephalic dog breeds including French Bulldogs, Bulldogs, Boxers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Shih Tzus, Boston Terriers, Mastiffs, and Pugs, and susceptible to Brachycephalic Upper Airway Syndrome (BUAS). BUAS have the appearance of a smushed in face, caused by variations of the skull bones, and can result in abnormalities of the respiratory system. This may lead to difficulty breathing, heat sensitivity, exercise intolerance, GI issues, and more.

Signs to look out for:
📍 Noisy Breathing: Snorting, snoring, or increased respiratory sounds.
📍Exercise Intolerance: Difficulty breathing during or after physical activity.
📍Altered Posture: Adjustments for better airflow.

If you have a Brachycephalic dog, please contact your veterinarian to discuss proactive treatment options that will help your pup lead a more comfortable and fulfilling life!
