We’re so happy to be able to share Tank’s story. Tank is one brave French Bulldog, who recently came through our doors in a dire situation. After a serious car accident, Tank was left with severe injuries to his leg and jaw. But thanks to the expertise and dedication of our veterinary team, the care of Tank's devoted parents, and Tank’s own fighting spirit, he underwent a successful surgery and was able to keep his leg.
Today, Tank is back to his energetic self, running around and living his best life with no signs of the trauma he endured. We wish all dogs were built like Tank, and he’s certainly living up to his name!
Little Texa came into DVSC after being referred by our friends at Little Elm Pet Clinic after having difficulties breathing. She was diagnosed with Laryngeal Paralysis, a condition in dogs and cats that results when the nerve that controls one of the muscles in the larynx (the cricoarytenoideus dorsalis (CAD) muscle) is not functioning. This muscle is responsible for opening the arytenoid cartilages of the larynx when an animal breathes so that air may pass easily into the trachea and down into the lungs. When the CAD muscle stops functioning due to the loss of nerve stimulation, the arytenoid cartilage in the larynx fails to open when the animal breathes, leading to obstruction of airflow.
Our surgeons were able to preform a Unilateral Arytenoid Lateralization (UAL) – also known as a “tie-back”. The UAL procedure involves tying heavy gauge sutures between the arytenoid and cricoid cartilages on one side of the larynx. This results in one side of the larynx being “tied open” so that airfow is less obstructed and the dog can breathe easier.
We are delighted to say that Texa's UAL and recovery went very well and she's enjoying the dog days of summer to the fullest! ❤️
During the warm summer months, brachycephalic dogs such as Pugs, Frenchies and English Bulldogs are at increased risk of breathing difficulties and heat stroke.
Be sure to watch for:
• Heavy panting
• Glazed eyes, rapid pulse
• Dark red tongue
• Excessive drooling
• Staggering or weakness
• Blue or gray tongue or gums
• Vomitng
If you suspect your pup might be suffering from heat stroke, please contact your closest emergency vet immediately.
