Wow, how is the summer half over?! Spring flew by in a flurry of hatchings, births, and rain storms so lots to catch you up on. Check out all the photos-you'll see we've been very fortunate this year. We had a total of 8 Cotton Patch goslings hatch-and 7 of them are girls! Unheard of luck! This is a big deal for a small farm like ours and we are trying to share their rare genetics by finding other breeders who are committed to increasing the numbers of this historically important American breed. Two have already gone to another NYS breeder who is starting to raise Cotton Patch. Two, named Tulip and Tupelo(after trees common in the southeast) will be animal ambassadors and will travel with us to various venues and events to educate the public on the work of the Livestock Conservancy and farms like ours specializing in endangered breeds.
We also have 8 new goat kids. Three are Cashmere goats and five are San Clemente Island . All are ridiculously adorable and watching their joyful antics as they bound around the farm is a recipe for happiness.

Two new babies in the last 24 hrs!" Luna" has been joined by another duckling "Sol"(also in honor of the eclipse happening on Monday) and a Cotton Patch gosling. We're still deciding on her name. They are so sweet, snuggling up against each other-cuteness overload!!

Our first successful 2024 hatching-Meet " Luna" (In honor of the upcoming eclipse)-a lovely little Dutch Hookbill duckling. In the video you'll notice that as she/he worked to get out of the egg they were already interacting with us and responding to my voice. It never gets old-welcoming a new healthy little one to the farm. And there's another one currently pipping-a small hole is beginning in the shell!

When people ask, "Isn't it a lot of work to take care of all those animals?" I always try to give an honest, balanced answer and include a realistic description of the time and energy and money that goes into quality animal care while also emphasizing our deep enjoyment of our time spent with these animals and the importance those connections to our animals and our surroundings are. This morning though, when I walked outside at 6am and saw this sunrise over our farm I was just awestruck by how lucky we are to enjoy this life on this beautiful property with each other, our animals, and the possibilities that greet us each morning. We hope you enjoy your day, wherever you are this morning!

Dutch Hookbill ducks are enjoying the more springlike weather, spending lots of time in the seasonal creek right behind the house. Also they've stepped up their egg production recently. There are duck and geese eggs in the incubator and the first ones are expected to start hatching in a few days. Stay tuned for duckling and gosling photos coming soon I hope🤞

Success! Cobweb and Evangeline have now bonded-check out the photos of him in Red Alert Security mode, protecting his mate. And even better news, she has laid her first 2 eggs which are now in the incubator. We are so happy that the old lady ducks, Macarena and ChaCha, Cobweb and Evangeline are all living in a little family group now!

Meet Cobweb, a critically endangered Cotton Patch Goose. These geese were developed in the Southeastern U.S. and were historically used to w**d fields of cotton and other crops. They also provided families with feathers, goose fat, and meat so they are typical of heritage breeds in that they are multipurpose. Many southern families survived the Depression and other challenging times with the help of these geese.
Cobweb, you'll notice, lives with our two ancient(they prefer the term "senior") Pekin Ducks, Macarena and ChaCha. These old ladies are mostly blind from cataracts but living their best life with Cobweb as their protector. He takes his job very seriously and is never more than a foot away from his girls. He LOVES them.
This year we have been slowly introducing a female Cotton Patch Goose, Evangeline, to him as a possible mate. Stay tuned-soon we hope to have photos of Cobweb, Evangeline, Macarena, and Cha Cha living happily together🤞

Started gathering cashmere from Shaanti, whose fiber is always the first each year to be ready to comb out. Attached is a video of me combing her cashmere yesterday and the full to the brim gallon bag filled with her soft as a cloud fiber. Also put a photo of Shaanti a few years ago nuzzling Starlord just after he was born. He is now a big, gorgeous buck and is currently breeding does here on the farm for the first time. Hopefully this year Shaanti will become a grandmother!

Sunshine and Blue Skies! Monday it was like a whole new world here-warm and sunny-and all the animals were out enjoying the mud being created by the melting snow. I love all the duck footprints in the snow🥹
You'll notice in the other photos that while I was trying to photograph the duck flock, they were photo bombed by Frida Kahlo the Welsummer chicken(who is pretty convinced she's the center of the universe) And you'll see Sephora, the Rouen duck, and her entourage of attentive male Dutch Hookbills, Mr Sass-man and Olibolli, who are never more than a few steps away from her.

Winter weather always a bit of a challenge on the farm- in the past couple of weeks we've experienced whiteout snow, tremendous wind storm(lost several trees), freezing rain and some cold temps. Everyone doing well, though, with some extra calories( warm mash made with hot water, hay stretcher pellets, molasses, grain, and lots of fresh produce) and some extra bedding to snuggle into. We are almost in February, when we all start thinking about spring!
