The Power of Magnesium⁠

I'm going to start this series off with my favorite mineral - magnesium! ⁠
⁠
Magnesium plays an important role in the horse's nervous and muscular systems, it is required for proper function. ⁠
⁠
Calcium and magnesium work together in the body. Calcium relies on magnesium to help function properly. When calcium is contracting muscles, magnesium helps to relax or release the muscles. If the magnesium isn't there to help, the muscle isn't allowed to relax and can cause the horse to stress. ⁠

Magnesium helps to improve performance by:⁠
⁠
⭐ Increasing oxygen delivery to muscles⁠
⭐ Promoting muscle strength⁠
⭐ Promoting relaxation⁠
⭐ Activating enzymes responsible for metabolizing carbs⁠
⭐ Helping protect against inflammation⁠
⁠
⁠
Low magnesium signs:⁠

💪 Grumpy about being brushed or touched⁠

I tend to recommend magnesium frequently, especially to those horses who are touchy or very tense. It is also very hard to over-dose on magnesium as the body will excrete what it doesn't need, making it a pretty safe mineral to supplement. However, always consult with your veterinarian before any supplementation, there are contraindications. ⁠
