GRIZZLY BEAR, YELLOWSTONE PARK.
It was late in the season, when most bears were already hibernating when we snapped this shot of this grizzly bear. It appeared to be looking for the perfect location to dig its den. We were hoping to watch the digging, but we moved out of our view. DID YOU KNOW that grizzly bears look for north or northeast facing slopes that receive tons of snow to dig their den? This is so the deep snow acts as insulation, keeping the bears warm in their underground home. And yes, most grizzly bears dig a new den every year. Bears are so fascinating!

GRIZZLY BEAR IN HYPERPHAGIA, YELLOWSTONE PARK.
This Yellowstone grizzly bear was busy munching away on vegetation on a gorgeous autumn afternoon when we snapped this photo. In fact, this bear was so busy munching that it didn't even acknowledge our presence as we sat in our vehicle. This is because this grizzly had entered its instinctive seasonal phase known as "hyperphagia". Every autumn, bears in the Northern Rockies enter this phase, which consists of constant hunger and constant thirst. No matter how much they eat, they are still hungry. Their hunger and thirst never subsides. This is Mother Nature's way of making sure these bears eat enough to have adequate fat on their bodies to survive through their winter hibernation. Now this of course doesn't mean they are running around looking for humans, but humans hiking in grizzly country need to be very aware of this phase because bears are more agitated during this time, and they are much more protective of any carcass they might find.
