Waldorf and Statler Cavia The adventures (limited as they may be) of Waldorf and Statler Cavia, two humble little Guinea pigs sharing a home and enjoying the simple life.

I’ve been asked how I’m doing. I will share more about Robin that might also help people who have not had guinea pigs understand a little more about how emotional these little ones can be. After seemingly depressed he’d been doing progressively worse for the past few days. Like Bunsen, I’d taken him out and to bed on my lap to hold him. He cuddled much more than usual, snuggling up tightly. We were saying goodbye. The next day he ate veggies and even came out of his house to steal a leaf from Beaker! I’m sure he knew that it was time and he made the best of it. He died in his house with his back to the door during that afternoon.

It’s much easier when you’ve had the chance to say goodbye. Not easy, just easier.

Robin passed away a couple of hours ago. He’s lived with me for a little over 4 years and might have been a number of months old when I got him. It’s difficult to tell because he never got very big. He was probably the runt of his litter. He had been keeping to one of the houses most of the time except for food and water. At feeding time he still sat up for his treats or his vitamin supplements but didn’t run around like he used to. Might have been age but I think he was depressed. The behavior changed when we lost Bunsen. They had been cagemates in the pet store when I got them, maybe longer than that.

As suspected, Floyd and Beaker (caught him too) are going to be problematic. No food-smelling items on this shelf now!

Seems Beaker is adjusting well. He comes to the corner to greet me, though he’s still skittish. He plays with Floyd and is a trickster. Floyd chased him around a house and he ducked inside. Floyd was looking around, even over the top and by the other house. Beaker didn’t come out until Floyd gave up and started eating.

Robin has been alone for some time and needs a little company. Yesterday (Friday 3/24) two new friends arrived. Beaker (the little white one) is about the same size as Robin when he moved in. The 3-color one hasn’t told us his name yet.

I was feeding Robin some veggies from the box of “Spinach and Spring Mix” and he quit being picky and solved the problem himself!

Both in my arms at the same time! Picked up Bunsen and he tried to jump from the bed. Robin was worrying about all the commotion so I picked him up and put them together on the bed. Both were quite anxious to climb back onto my lap.
