ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE CANCELLED
Per Dave:
I’m sorry to post this, but the St.Patricks parade in Alexandria this Saturday is cancelled due to a lack of participation. This has always been been my favorite parade to walk in and I’ve sponsored it for many years. We’ve had as many a 30 dogs walking in this parade and typically have had over 20. Last year it rained in the morning and although the sun came out before the parade started we only had 10 dogs and owners. We’ve always been popular with the spectators, the biggest crowds of any parade we have done anywhere. They love to reach out and pet them and take pictures. I have many fond memories of the parades
For two consecutive years just before the pandemic, I saw a woman waving at us with a young son who was blind. The parade stopped moving and I was able to let him explore Titan with his hands touching his head, nose, and even his webbed feet. Jason and his wife Alejandra were able to let him touch their two Newfs. He had the biggest grin which made my day. Last year there was a blind young woman who got to explore Eddy with her hands, the “biggest dog she ever felt”. I remember fondly they used to hold a “ best costumed dogs” before the parade started. Both the Rainey’s dog and Liz McCully’s dog Finbarr won several times. I’m sure there will be many people that will miss seeing the Newfoundlands. I’m retired now and will be moving to S. Carolina, so I doubt I’ll do anymore events up here. Maybe I’ll get with South East Newfoundland Club and try to hold some events/ parades in Myrtle Beach or other towns.
Best to all my friends that love Newfs
Dave
