Did you catch puppy fever this year too??

After many requests over the past couple years, Positively Awesome Dogs will now be offering a monthly (weather permitting) group puppy class on Saturday, August 10, at 9:15 a.m.

Class is first come first served and suitable for puppies 8-20 weeks. We’re going to be working on age appropriate introduction to commands and leash manners, common puppy problems, and age appropriate play with other puppies so you know what you to look for when supervising your puppy’s playtime.

Puppies must be current on their vaccine schedule and have had a f***l test within 8 weeks of their first class and bring a copy of their current schedule or be able to show they are current on your clinic’s phone app if they have one.

Baby’s first swim. Oakley decided to be brave and try out the pool today. We think it’s safe to say she will probably be found there moving forward.

Tonight (with owner permission of course) the pups were treated to a special dog friendly Thanksgiving day meal!

White meat turkey, green beans, cranberries (a bit tart!), and sweet potatoes (all plain) followed by a pumpkin pup cup for dessert!

Turkey, sweet potato, and dessert were by far the favorite menu items with green beans being “ok” and cranberries coming in dead last.

Ruby (center) is here for training at the same time as her cousins Baxter (Golden Retriever) and Brutus (Bernese Mountain Dog). She also celebrated her 1st birthday with us today!

Naturally, we had to have a party! She also got to take a walk down to the coffee shop for a much deserved pup cup!

Summer temperatures are definitely here! Marvel is having a blast “testing” out the pool!

Happy Easter! The pups celebrated with a photo shoot and some special homemade treats!

Porter says “good morning!”

He is going to be a very large lap dog when he grows up. Every morning after he has his breakfast he insists on sitting just like this while I have my coffee. How could I say no to that face?

So much for the “spring” part of Spring Break!

At 10 weeks old, Porter the Bull Mastiff is the youngest guest that is here for spring break. His family already had their spring break plans made when their breeder let them know when the puppies would be born and when he would be coming home so, they did some research and gave us a call to schedule his very first vacation!

It didn’t take long for this handsome “little” chunk to capture our hearts. Even if he did decide that 5:30 in the morning was time to get up and get going!

We LOVE when puppies sleep through the night, but don’t feel bad if yours doesn’t! Just like babies, puppies don’t have good bladder control yet and they need frequent trips outside even at nighttime. Agnes just spent her first night with us and she made it until 5:50 (10 minutes before my alarm would go off) which is pretty impressive for a 12 week old puppy.

When puppies board with us, they sleep in the bedroom with me so that I can hear them if they wake up and need to go outside. Boarding shouldn’t set back your puppy’s progress. We want to keep that momentum you’ve built up, maybe even give you a boost!

Nala is a 13 week old lab puppy who is doing daycare with us during the week. She loves with an adult dog who isn’t super impressed with her yet so she hasn’t had much opportunity to be around bigger dogs.

At first she was very nervous around my dogs (OP, the black 9 year old American Pit Bull Terrier and Solo, the 5.5 yr old brindle mix breed). OP has always loved puppies and smaller dogs so when he saw that she was obviously afraid of him, he did what he always does and lay down on his side/back next to her. As you can see from the pictures, it didn’t take long for Nala to decide these big boys were a ton of fun!

She also learned that she’s small enough to scramble through under the coffee table to sneak attack the bigger dogs. Unfortunately for her, we keep things down there so I had to improvise a solution to keep her out of there.

Tabor wore boots and a cooling jacket to protect him from the heat for what was still a very short midday walk.

Boots protect his feet from the hot ground/pavement. And the cooling jacket reflects heat away from his body and the water it is soaked in evaporates pulling heat away from his core. Even with these things it is not safe to be outside for long on days like today. The water in his jacket was almost completely evaporated after 2 blocks. His body and core, however, were still cool to the touch.

If you don’t have things like this to protect your pup, you shouldn’t even attempt a short walk unless it is early in the morning before it starts to really heat up or late in the evening when it is cooled off. Even then, you need to be aware of your dog’s condition.

Tonight I stopped a lesson less than halfway through. We had been working for probably around 15 minutes including breaks and the dog was already showing early signs of overheating. Some dogs are more sensitive to heat than others.

Heat stroke is extremely dangerous. If you’re going to be outside with your dog in the heat, you *need* to be aware of the early warning signs, be prepared to stop what you’re doing, and get them somewhere cool.
