This is your friendly annual reminder to collar, microchip, and contain your animals this holiday season. Walk outside on-leash for potty breaks, create a comfortable hiding space, and generally label your pets. It can prevent permanent losses. Fireworks are scary. People are inconsiderate. They don't follow the rules, and they don't care about whether or not it affects you and yours. Take precautions and pay extra close attention this week. Keep your pets close! Be safe! Be kind! Love your pets in the way that keeps them safe. 🐾❤️🐾

Great advice! The number one reason I see dogs returned is because new adopters didn't give them enough time to fully decompress or before meeting the members of the household. Please understand that dogs need time, just like we do, to adjust to new social situations!

For those of you with dogs who will be experiencing Fourth of July fireworks for the first time, here are a few tips! 🎆🎇🎆🎇🎆🎇🎆🎇

🐾Give a high-value treat with each "BOOM." Generating a positive association early on can help you avoid reactivity, destructive behaviors, and fear based reactions to explosions in the future. While not an exact recipe to avoid fear, rewarding your dog for experiencing loud noises with a high value treat or activity can help create positive or neutral associations.

🐾Put together a small, dark, quiet space for your dog to hide if they feel the need to escape the overstimulating noises and lights. A covered crate in a closet works great. 👍🏻

🐾Play music or white noise in order to decrease the impact of the explosions.

🐾Keep your pets inside. Take a potty break early, before fireworks begin. If you must let them out again that evening, supervise them. More dogs run away from home on July 4th than any other night of the year. Take them out on leash if possible.

🐾In the case that your pet escapes, you want to be sure that they are microchipped and have their collar and tags on for a quick reunion.

🐾For dogs with anxiety, you can try some holistic medications such as melatonin, or ask your vet about something a little stronger to help ease fear and anxiety. Sedatives may be required for extreme cases. Consult your vet.

🐾Be patient. Fearful states can cause uncommon behaviors to present. Understand that you pet may not be stubborn, maliciously destructive, ignoring you, or doing things just to spite you. They may be overwhelmed, overstimulated, and scared. Have some understanding and forgive mistakes.

Meet Drusilla! She is currently at Mesquite Animal Shelter and in need of rescue! This sweet girl is a seriously overbred squatty pit mix, who responded well to other dogs overall. She seemed most interested in the A/C and solitude with her people...not that I blame her. Texas is HOT and her poor body isn't built to handle it. Can any of our local rescues take her in? Check her videos out here!

This GORGEOUS sweet baby girl is Sylvie! She is currently at Mesquite Animal Shelter awaiting her rescue! Sylvie is not only sweet with people, but she displayed some AMAZING dog-friendly signs on our walk throughout the shelter, and she is absolutely smart and eager to please. She allowed me to probe and touch sensitive areas with no complaint, ran alongside me on leash like I was her favorite person in the world, and smiled the whole time! Sylvie does have some kind of eye injury/infection and some minor skin issues. She certainly looks RUFF. But she is younger than she looks, full of energy and s***k, and absolutely friendly and outgoing. Is there a rescue that can give this girl a chance? By all accounts, she seems to be a sweet and easy foster opportunity with some minor medical issues to be resolved. Please reach out if you are interested in loving this sweet girl every day! 🥰

Meet Remy and her two adorable puppies at Mesquite Animal Shelter . Remy is a beautiful pocket pittie who has recently given birth and is such a sweet first-time mom who just needs out of the shelter environment long enough to nurse and wean her pups. She is so loving, and allows me to handle the pups with no problems. She craves affection and responds well to treats and direction. She is missing two outer toes on her back left foot that gives her a funny little wobble, and she needs a rescue to pull her into a safe landing spot. Is anyone available to foster this precious little family until they can be adopted out through rescue? Please reach out to the shelter for more info!

Andromeda
A255514
Garland Animal Services

Andromeda is still at Garland Animal Services, and needs an adopter or foster to step forward! The shelter is full and Andromeda is struggling to cope with the stress of the shelter environment. Could you be a foster or future family? Andromeda does not show well in the kennel. She is anxious, scared, and defensive. Everytime I approach I am greeted with bared teeth, barking, and stiff abrasive body language. I toss her a couple of treats, and she's willing to interact. Once she gets close and I can pet her, she is a whole different dog! She changes from inside to outdoors, and you can tell the kennel is dampening her spirits. Once outside she is fun, affectionate, and spirited! She is dog social and just needs a second chance.

Meet Papa Fritas at Garland Animal Shelter & Adoption Center (A256237)

I got a chance to evaluate Papa for a short time on Saturday April 23. What I found is that overall, Papa has some trust issues and is unsure of human hands. He is however, attentive, food motivated, was a good leash walker within our yard and to-and-from the kennel area, and was willing to enter my personal space with food motivation. Papa is underweight, hard-mouthed, and has sustained some injury to his front left leg resulting in a toe-touching limp. One thing I immediately noticed about Papa, is that he presents subtle body language cues that can be overlooked if you are not being attentive. He will swifty change between requesting attention, and then demanding personal space. Anyone who handles him needs to be acutely aware of his communications. He frequently presented body language with a lowered head, whale eye, stiffness, and shifting weight, and was hyperaware. He was reactive towards quick hand movements (flinched and muzzle slapped my hand) and was generally very uncertain of my intentions. But, rather than practicing avoidance, Papa is very confident and is willing to confront anything that makes him uncomfortable. He will snap as a warning and I believe he will snap with intent to bite if his handler is not very aware and cautious. He snapped at me once while in the yard and stared at me while growling down to see if I would back down. I kept my hands to myself, held my ground, and was able to walk him back to his kennel uneventfully. For good notes, Papa was a good leash walker, and ignored other canine distractions for a food motivator. He was non-reactive towards the dog in the yard next to us, despite the other dog’s fence running, barking, and generally disruptive behaviors. Papa remained disengaged after a cursory glance. Papa performed several basic obedience commands, and he seems to already have basic obedience mastered at least. He knew Sit, Down, and Wait, and walked calmly on the leash by my side without pulling. Despite being willing to approach me and work for food reward, I had to proceed with caution. Papa is rough-mouthed and snapped my fingers while trying to get a treat. He didn’t break the skin, and left no bruises. He seemed to have some regret immediately. Nipping my fingers was not his intent, but he wants to get in and away from your hands ASAP. He uncertainty with human hands no doubt contributes to this behavior. We worked on treating with a flat palm in order to avoid nipped fingers in the future. His slobbery nature made holding treats that way a little difficult, but we worked through it. He is willing to correct his behavior in order to get the reward. His treat-taking was gentler and less frantic by the end of our session as we got a hold that worked for us. Even when Papa entered my space of his own volition, his body language was stiff and his eyes were large and white. I was happy to toss treats at a distance to get him out of my personal space. He needs a slow positive desensitization to people and a handler who is familiar with atypical dogs. Unprofessional opinion = He’s a little weird. Until we can generate enough positive experiences to generate trust with hands, watch your fingers. He is both confident and smart. Wants to be a good boy. Having trust issues. He is struggling in the shelter. Can anyone foster?

Meet Little Bear at Garland Animal Shelter & Adoption Center !

Little Bear is very shut down in her kennel, but turned into a whole different dog once we got outside. She did pretty well on the leash but could use some refinement. She was a medium-low energy kind of girl who approached me repeatedly for affection. She must surely be potty trained. In the 20 minutes we spent together she took 2 long pees and 3 large poops. Her kennel was clean! She has a playful gait when she comes to you and is generally calm and nonreactive to things. The dog on the other side of the fence hardly made her radar - when she did sniff through the fence it was with a relaxed body posture and wagging tail. She knows some basic obedience commands and didn't show any sensitivity to being touched or handled. She was only mildly treat motivated, but to be fair my treats weren't the juiciest today. Hard biscuits were all I had with me. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Little Bear needs to get out of her kennel. I suspect she would be an AMAZING foster candidate. She has a mild endearing temperament and showed great dog tolerant behaviors through the fence. She ignored all dogs inside. She knew her "sit" and "down" commands, and never jumped up on me. She seems to have great manners in general. Anyone willing to foster or adopt this sweet thing?

Meet Brandy!

Available for adoption

Brandy is a beautiful GSD who presented a lot of potential! She's very people-oriented and presented her belly for pets many times. Basically ran over to me and dove shoulder-first into the turf for it lol she had a lot of pent-up energy, but was still manageable and so sweet. She knows a few basic training commands, "sit" "down" "come" and responded well to a lure. She didn't seem very toy motivated, but was happy to work for treats and affection. She didn't have any fear or hesitation with the leash, but could definitely work on her leash walking skills. I was only with her for about 20 minutes, but she showed great trainability. I believe with a home environment and dedicated owner she'd be amazing. I see a lot of intelligence in this girl, and think she might be more amenable to meeting other dogs outside of the shelter environment. I did notice some reactivity towards other dogs at the gate and while we walked through the aisles between the kennels inside. She didn't seem incredibly committed to barrier fighting, and I was told by multiple shelter staff that this particular issue had begun after her stay at the shelter. I suspect it is more related to shelter stress than any true aggression towards other dogs. She was relatively easy to redirect from her dog reactivity. However, anything allowed to continue will repeat itself. Let's market this girl and get her out of the shelter! She has a gentle mouth and the prettiest eyes! Absolutely loveable and affectionate. It seems like she's had at least one litter of pups. She enjoyed the pool, and we had a great time together ❤️

Living in a shelter is stressful. Andromeda needs an experienced foster and home environment to put her in a position to make positive behavioral progress. Andromeda came into the shelter underweight with a litter of pups, and has struggled since they were all adopted out. This poor sweet Mama has had a rough go of it, but she's working hard to overcome her anxieties. She really wants to trust. Despite her struggles, Andromeda has proven herself to be deserving of a second chance. Affectionate, intelligent, and gorgeous! Could you be a temporary (or permanent) home for Andromeda? Please contact Garland Animal Shelter & Adoption Center for more information about Andromeda or becoming a foster!

Meet JJ Watt and Cocoa!

These two adorable pups had a great time playing and learning together yesterday as we worked on sitting for treats, socialization, and following cues! These two little nuggets were so sweet, and would love to find a home of their very own.

Meet Itzzy!

Itzzy is an adoptable 3 month old puppy at Garland Animal Shelter & Adoption Center! She is spirited, playful, and motivated to please her person. We worked on some basic obedience commands, personal space observation, and play! Like any puppy, Itzzy will require a lot of guidance and training. She is smart and willing to put in the time with an owner who is willing to do the same.
