Northwest Arkansas Working and Police Dog Association A group of dedicated IGP trainers in Fayetteville, AR. Site: www.nwaschutzhund.com The three phases are: tracking, obedience, and protection.
(15)

The Northwest Arkansas Working and Police Dog Association was formed in 2008, founded by Jerol Skinner, Travis Pettit, Michael Conley, Brandon Janssen, Curtis Bolden, and Kraig Sharp. The primary purpose of our club is to provide an outlet for IPO training, trials, and seminars to our members. IPO, previously known as schutzhund, is a competitive dog sport that tests the handler/dog team in three

phases. Control and obedience is emphasized in all of the phases. Schutzhund was conceptualized in Germany during the late 19th century as a system to test the breed-worthiness of the German Shepherd Dog. If the German Shepherd Dog passed the schutzhund exam, the dog was allowed to be bred under the German registry; if the dog failed, then the dog was removed from the breeding program. This system is used among the national breed registries in Europe to this day, in order to preserve the working quality of the German Shepherd Dog. Schutzhund has, also, evolved into an international dog sport sensation. As a result, it has been renamed to IPO, an acronym from the phrase Internationale Prüfungsordnung, which translates to "international rules of examination." IPO is open to all breeds. However, the sport of IPO is a demanding one. For the handler, it is demanding in terms of the time, commitment, and the dedication required. For the dog, it is demanding in terms of the level of stress that must be endured and the adversities that must be overcome. IPO demands speed and precision in the work. As such, not all dogs are capable; not all handlers have the necessary level of commitment. IPO is a lifestyle, demanding dedication and commitment from the handler/dog team. At the same time, the results and effects are extremely rewarding. IPO, through proper training, produces a wonderful and harmonic relationship between the handler and the dog.

We had a successful winter trial this past weekend. Mother Nature was kind and gave us excellent conditions. We want to thank Mike Karlov for his fair judging, Michael Menger for his safe and reliable helper work, Keith Forbes for his trial secretary efforts, and Travis Pettit for lending his knowledge to the organizational process of securing and facilitating a trial. The atmosphere Saturday was festive with good crowd attendance watching solid performances. We want to extend a special thank you to all those that brought food. With the fire place, the club house was quite warm giving everyone a place to retreat for food, beverages, and warmth.
Saturday ended with four complete BH's, three IGP 2's, one FPr1, and one FPr3. It was followed up with fun training and great conversations!
Sunday, while having the ideal weather yielded two unsuccessful FH-1 tracks.
Rebekah Harrington completed BH's for Dzero Izac and Dauntless Izac. Travis Pettit completed a BH with Sharox von Peroh, and Dusty Norbeck trialed with her first BH dog, Corleone von United Pride. We are looking for all four dogs to be IGP 1 ready in the next fall.
Michael Conley demonstrated a powerful IGP 2 routine with Black Devil vom Duidensteig finishing A98, B87, C100 = 285 SG. This was our High in Trial, High in Tracking, and High in Protection.
Mari Whitmer was rolling with Calamity Izac with A98, and B92, before her dog lived up to her name in C phase. We look for this team to put it all together in the fall of 2024.
Donna Bovee handled her boy, Odin Bullerjahn, to a respectful A88, B89, C97 = 274 SG. Donna walked away a little taller having claimed High Obedience.
Our guest, Rachelle McKinley, managed Abraham vom Haus Lynch to our second highest scoring dog of the weekend. A95, B89, C94 = 278 SG.
Our second out of town guest was Stacey Britton with her girl Bonny Equidius. They navigated a FPr3 track receiving a respectable score of 84 points.
The club tips our proverbial caps to Rachelle and Stacey for supporting our trial.
Herman Vargas rounded out the day with Vargas Letro Vonn posting a respectable performance in the FPr1 = 88 points and a UPr1 score of 82 points.
Sunday promised spectacular conditions for two FH-1 tracks. However, the dogs had other plans. Vivi Haney and Deerwood's Qai Rurik Atomic Wrought demonstrated quality tracking behavior for a large portion of the track but failed to find the remainder. Herman Vargas and Vargas Letro Voltt kept everyone on their toes, finding our judge more interesting than the idea of tracking. For both club members, we're proud of their efforts. Those are the breaks.
Overall, we are thrilled with the performances of our club members. We feel the highs and lows in each others performances. It takes a group to succeed and we each own a little part in each others dogs. It was fitting end to the 2023 training season.

Another successful trial weekend. Thanks to Russ Osborn for the assessments and suggestions. Thanks to Rich for laying the two FH tracks. Thanks to Rebekah for her trial secretary work. And thanks to Travis for the helper work. Mike and Bo, Donna and Oden completed their IGP 1’s. Keith and Indy completed their GPR 1, Vivi and Qai completed their FPR 3, and Jerol and Grimm completed their FH1.
Mari and Lami had to pull due to injury so we hope to see them in the fall.
Rich and Gunny darn near got their FPR 1…so close. Sheila and Roxy took a stab at the FH1 but came up a little short. Briana Simmons and Mazikeen came up a little short for the Bh. We sure appreciate her supporting the trial and we understand how difficult it is to come to a new field and try to pull this off. We wish her the best of luck in the future.

We bid a fond farewell to Jim and Jenni Gunhus a little over a week ago. Simultaneously we finalized our plan for our version of a pole ceremony. To honor the hard work everyone puts into their dogs and the clubs dogs we decided to commemorate this by placing the handler/dog teams on the poles representative of their achievements. It seemed fitting that Jim and Jenni with their dogs, Loki - Male German Shepherd, Gus - Male Giant Schnauzer, Bryn -Female Belgian Malinois should be first. They were great members, a lot of fun, and will be missed.
