This was written by another well known and respected ethical breeder and felt it should be shared. It does concern all us ethical breeders that do the right breeding standard in regards to our beautiful BC’s and other breeds. 🤔

It's currently a difficult time for breeders. I'm going to have the uncomfortable conversation with you regarding the current puppy market.

When Covid hit, there was what we could term "panic" puppy buying. Due to the increase in demand, some breeders increased their prices dramatically & the public were happy to pay high prices to obtain a puppy NOW. The increase in demand & the price hike encouraged some breeders to expand their breeding programs & many new breeders entered the market. There was a lot of opportunistic breeding from inferior quality dogs & from breeders who offered little or no puppy raising curriculum. All too often breeders with ill intentions will not meet the breed or puppy raising standards, or the required health care for adult dogs. Consequently, there are more breeders now & the puppy market is saturated. Unethical breeders who cut costs can sell their puppies at lower prices. The public needs to be made aware that this is false economy.

So, you're probably wondering why the public should be supporting ethical breeders during these difficult times. Afterall, the rising cost of living affects everyone. The fact is that ethical breeders want to protect & preserve the quality of their breed. If the public are buying inferior quality dogs at cheaper prices & not supporting ethical breeders, ethical breeders will NOT cut costs. They will initially reduce litter numbers, then pause their breeding program. They may stop breeding for a while & assess the situation. This may lead to them stopping breeding permanently. If the breeders who are breeding to the breed standards stop breeding, where are the quality puppies required to maintain or improve the breed standard going to come from? If only inferior quality dogs are being bred from, that's where the breeding lines will come from. Obviously, this is not in the best interest of any breed. Even if ethical breeders want to breed litters to replenish their own breeding stock, they will not unless there is demand for their puppies. Female dogs also do "age out". If breeders wait too long without breeding their bi***es, they will be too old. There are legal & physical restrictions involved.

Emerald Park has been fortunate so far, but I admit to anxiety over the future. I am seeing & hearing of excellent breeders as well as new breeders having trouble placing all of their puppies in homes. I like to have enough families actively seeking a puppy on my Waiting List before breeding a pair. But, in the current economic, puppy saturated climate, I am aware that situations can change & families can change their minds. It does concern me.

Some are calling this a "battle cry" to the public. It's not a plea for more families to purchase puppies, but for those who are seeking puppies to look to ethical breeders first. Don't go for cheaper puppies of lower standard, raised with poorer methods.
I'm asking members of the public looking for a puppy to buy smart. Price isn't always a sign of quality. Support ethical breeders who health test, raise puppies with advanced behavioural science curriculums, share photos & videos & provide high quality education for their new puppy families. Research well.

This isn't about Emerald Park Border Collies; this is about the current situation we are facing in Australia. Please protect ethical breeders & allow them to continue to breed to high standards. Ethical breeders will stop breeding before compromising their integrity, lines, programs, care or standards. Unless you support ethical breeders, we cannot continue to hold to the standards that our dogs deserve. This includes careful selection of quality parents, health testing, veterinary care, quality nutrition, advanced puppy curriculum, puppy evaluations etc. Ethical breeders will breed to one standard only & that is of excellence. If anything stops ethical breeders from achieving this, they will stop breeding.

Breeding well, is expensive. Who is going to protect our Border Collie breed standards if ethical breeders are forced to stop breeding? The standard of the breed will deteriorate ...... conformation, genetic health etc. Don't leave the fate of dogs in the hands of ill-intentioned breeders. Support ethical breeders.

"Having a new puppy can be both exhilarating and exhausting at the same time. Puppies are so cute when sleeping but not so cute when biting your ankles lol. This is all part of the deal and the good news is that it will pass! Planning, patience and understanding will help you get through this. Ensure puppy has lots of sleep away from busy family areas (did you know an 8 week old puppy needs 20 hours of uninterrupted sleep every day?) and plenty of chew toys for teething and distraction. Reinforce the good behaviours your puppy offers you and don't expect too much! Don't worry too much about formal training of behaviours but instead start playing some fun games to build focus and connection - this will help with your recall and lead walking later. Take the pressure off yourself and your puppy. Know that you are both doing the best you can to navigate a whole new world together. Aim for progress but never perfection. (I call my adorable new Cav puppy Memphis my 'Perfectly Imperfect Puppy' knowing he is wonderful just the way he is, shark teeth and all lol ). If a fully grown adult dog only has the cognitive ability of a 3-5 year old human, we really can't expect too much of a young baby puppy, can we? Oh and before I forget to mention puppies don't do things to deliberately annoy us, they are just being puppies. Cherish every moment. Before you know it, they will old and grey and you will have forgotten all about the 'puppy stuff' - you may even be missing it 🐾"

The next time you’re in your dog’s mouth (you do brush his or her teeth, right?) notice the bump on the roof of his mouth just behind the two front middle teeth? It’s called the ‘incisive papilla,” and near the center of it is a hole that leads to a duct that leads to the “Jacobson’s organ.” The Jacobson’s organ is a very cool thing. Put in “See Spot Run” terms, it allows your dog to literally taste the air by combining taste and smell.

Dogs use their Jacobson’s organ to experience sexual markers (pheromones) left behind by other dogs via urine, or when coming across the scent of a bitch in season. While dogs don’t have a Flehmen response seen in many other animals (throwing back the head, and raising or curling the upper lip which helps open the entry slits into Jacobson’s Organ), dogs will “chatter their teeth” instead. A dog might hold his mouth in a quasi-open position that looks a little like a grin, or he might even lick the air. And you thought he was just happy to see you.

One theory holds that the Jacobson’s Organ could account for a dog’s ability to identify and recognize other animals and people. It’s also believed that it’s this organ that enhances a newborn’s ability to find its mother.

⚠️ “𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱?!”

😅 I can not tell you how many times over the past 5 weeks a random member of the public has stopped me to inform me that my puppy is not fully vaccinated. I mean, I book the appointments, so really you’d think I should know 😉

😏 Let me tell you why I don’t really care.

🧠 A puppy’s first critical learning window is from the age of 3-16 weeks. During this time, they are making rapid and lasting associations between themselves and the big wide world around them.

❗️It is vitally important that we expose our puppy to a variety of novel sights/sounds/situations within this window of development in a fun and positive manner.

😱 For puppies that have negative experiences at this age, the lesson learnt will most likely be permanent and have an impact on future behaviour.

➡️ The best way to create confidence and avoid teaching your puppy to be overly excited by everyone around them, is to practice indirect exposure.

👀 This means going places where they can watch people and other dogs without meeting them face to face.

✅ As they watch the things going on around them you should be marking and rewarding them for calm behaviour.

🎈 The best experiences involve brief positive exposure to something new - sound/place/sight/sensation etc.

🏠 You don’t always have to leave your house to practice positive exposure.

💡You can set up a puppy safe obstacle in your backyard.

🎶 Play the soundproof puppy app during play and/or meal times.

🕵🏻‍♂️Have a friend or family member dress up in something strange.

👉🏽 You’re only limited to your imagination, but remember to keep these experiences brief and positive.

🎥 I have shared a stack of Maggie’s exposure experiences.

😬 At all of the places we have gone, my puppy was not riddled with canine cough or parvovirus.

🦠 One of the main reasons people avoid taking their puppy out until it has had its final vaccinations, is due to the fear that the puppy will contract a deadly disease.

💉 Don’t get me wrong, disease prevention should be a serious consideration, but when we act with common sense these risks can be managed.

✅ 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘷𝘦𝘵

Your vet will be the one that is on top of outbreaks in your area. Ask them directly if they know of any suburbs that are best avoided at that time.

✅ 𝘈𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘥𝘰𝘨 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴

The dog park is an obvious one, but many public parks and ovals are probably being regularly used by dog owners. Depending on the local conditions, parvovirus can live in soiled areas for anywhere from a few months to a year.

✅ 𝘍𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘷𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘴

Ensure your puppy receives the appropriate vaccinations at the right times for their development. If unsure, consult with your vet.

✅ 𝘐𝘧 𝘪𝘯 𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘵, 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘺.

Your puppy can still have valuable experiences from your arms. If you are out with your puppy and unsure whether it is safe, carry them.

🤒 While physical health may seem a more immediate concern for our puppies, we cannot forget that long term behaviour problems can also wind up having deadly consequences for some dogs.

👉🏽 Early positive exposure training during a puppy’s critical period is very important for their developing minds and future behaviour.

𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁.

➡️ The word socialisation gets thrown around a lot when talking about puppies.

🐕🐕 For many pet owners it conjures images of dogs playing with other dogs. For this reason I generally refer to early critical training as positive exposure experiences instead.

🙅🏽‍♀️ In all the places we visited, not once did I encourage Maggie to interact with other random dogs we encountered.

🐩 She has only ever met familiar dogs that we know and can control.

🤕 Not only are there big risks for disease transmission from dog to dog, but there is also the potential that your puppy could have a negative social experience.

🏠 When your puppy first comes home there should be a heavy focus on creating new and novel experiences, including taking them to places where they can safely view the world and all of the weird and wonderful things in it.

💪🏽 Bolstering our dogs genetically inherited traits with good training is super important.

🧠 We should be considering the effects of nature and nurture, rather than constantly asking ourselves which of the two is more important.

🙌🏽 Giving your puppy a variety of early positive experiences gives them the best chance at developing into an adult that will have the kind of mental resiliency to navigate the human world with minimal stress.
