I am starting to get sick to death of unqualified people offering bitting advice via social media. If they do not come out and look in your horse's mouth to see what they are or are not capable of accepting, they have absolutely no business telling you what you should be riding your horse in. Would you seriously accept the same "advice" about what size saddle you should be using? Would you go to a tack shop and just buy one because your friend, trainer, neighbours goldfish told you too? Why then do people go out and spend hundreds of pounds on the next wonder bit only to find that's not working either? This is called wilful ignorance. The price of a bit and bridle fitter is less than the cost of two decent bits and most people are surprised at the simple cost effective solutions we tend to offer. LANTRA qualified bit and bridle fitters have done extensive research and training in anatomy. EAPER members will only work for the benefit of your horse. This is what we are trained to do. Stop trusting well meaning but ultimately unqualified people with your best friends welfare.

Thank you all for your support and amazing commitment to the well being of your beautiful horses, I have had an absolute blast with all of you. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

This is one of the reasons I don't carry or recommend these bits. Very rarely are they a "kinder option". Most are simply too thick to be anatomically comfortable for the horse and end up being fitted incorrectly, increasing the pain from an unsuitable material. If in doubt get your bit and bridle fitter to take a look, preferably me!! The cost of a consultation is much cheaper than the constant purchase of unsuitable bits! A big thank you to Amy Morris for the pictures.

Headpieces. I'm often told "he's fine I have an anatomical bridle". Just like bits, every horse is different and one size definitely does not fit all, and just like a bit, the fit is absolutely critical, an over tight or poorly fitting headpiece, will have as much influence on your horse's performance and wellbeing as what's in his mouth and the consequences of getting it wrong can be quite dramatic. Here is a selection of the different styles I carry when attending your bit and bridle fitting consultation, as you can see they are all different in style, some subtle and some not so. What they all have in common is the provision of the highest level of comfort and welfare for your dancing partner, provided that it is the right one.

Thank you so much to Cheshire Riding Club and Sophie Lai for inviting me to camp. I had the opportunity to work with some fabulous owners, who genuinely only wanted the best for their dancing partners. Changes in way of going and comfort were found by all and I'm sure I was more excited than my clients at times! Some of the changes being so dramatic they were capable of stopping me in my tracks. This was a beautifully run camp with some real quality instructors in the shape of Gary Foddon and Emily Watts both of whom are skilled at getting the very best out of people, and capable of tackling issue with a sense of humour. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and the facilities at Somerford Park are second to none. If any of you are looking for a camp for next year, you could do a lot worse than this one!

It was such a privilege to work with some fantastic ex racehorses at the weekend whilst they were at the RoR camp at Lincomb Equestrian Centre. Beautiful horse's given a second chance at a fulfilling life, all of whom are now in the expert care of owners who are passionate about their welfare. It really is such a myth that these horses are the thugs of the horse world, I watched them all working together in the fabulous arena's at Lincomb and didn't witness a single meltdown!
Brilliant day. Thank you to everyone for asking me along, and Amy Bannister Bell for organising such a fantastic camp.
I hope everyone had a great weekend and made it home safely.

The Importance of good dental work.
For years I've struggled with this one, who genuinely hates having his teeth done. I have had numerous dentists look at him, all of them except one have battled against his grim determination to make it difficult. I have been told by one well known drama queen, that it was the worse mouth he had ever seen, and another respected expert tried to punch him in the face when he fought the anaesthetic with every breath of his body. Finally thanks to the diminutive Kate Davidson of Little Rock Equine, we were able to find out why! In the picture of the interior of his mouth if you look carefully he has some rather large retained Wolf teeth, but the really shocking discovery can be seen in the other picture. If you zoom in on his tongue, you will see a large thick scar running almost the width of the underside. This will probably explain his real fear of dental work and his hatred of having his mouth touched in any way. Without the help of Kate and her brilliance at not only dental work but anaesthesia, this would have remained a mystery
So why is this so important? The horse has to be comfortable in his mouth to be able to perform to his best ability.
There are not many horses that are as extreme in reactions as this one, but good dentistry is crucial for all equines and should never be undervalued. Listen to what your dentist tells you, take a photo for reference and never be afraid to ask questions! Oh and give me a call if you would like some help.
