Mac was adopted the day after I took him in! No big surprise -- he's an exceptional cat, plus gave him an unbeatable write-up. (1,2)

While I was there, I finally got to stop by 's tranquility garden (3,4). It's so lovely! I would have loved to sit awhile if everything wasn't sopping wet. Welcome to October in the PNW, right?

I'm down to just one inside student now, Margaret. (5) I'm pretty sure she's Ryan's and Liam's sib. Speaking of Ryan, he's with a foster for some advanced coursework, but he'll be back to see how he and Margaret get along. They're a matched set.

And then there's Jimmie (6), who came in mid-June with Luther, Georgie, Bill, Ben, Ryan, and Liam. Jimmie decided he lives here now, so he's officially my #7 cat. Bill is in the colony shed, Ryan's in foster, and everyone else has been adopted!

Best part is every cat shown and mentioned in this post was fixed courtesy of my grant. Still some more to go, but all the females have been taken care of so we can relax a little.

Mac, my handsome boyfriend, graduates today. He'll be ready for adoption at in a couple of days. He's the cat I would have if I was having only one. Big reformed-tomcat-main-character energy! He actually does ok with other cats, as long as they're chill and smaller than him and don't run or flip him any salt. Typical alpha male! 😹 He really just wants to be with his person. ❤️ I'll miss him, but he needs his own home!

Meet Barbara and Margaret from the crowded house. Barbara is mama to the 2 kittens* I got last month. Margaret might be a sibling to Ryan, who still hasn't figured out what people are for. Maybe Margaret will be a good influence.

*Did I post about the 2 kittens? I hope I posted about them. I haven't been able to make myself post. The cats do funny and remarkable things every day, but I get overwhelmed trying to catalogue it. (See what I did there? Cat-alogue?)

Anyway, these two will be spayed tomorrow and their new lives will begin. Will they figure out the point of people or not? Stay tuned!

I am so grateful for the groups that made room for these friendly friends. I still have way too many cats here, but knowing that, when they're ready to graduate, there will be places for them to go so they can find good homes!

SPOTLIGHT ON: ⭐Liam and Ryan⭐
Now that our first string players are out in the world, it's time to work with our second stringers. Ryan (top) and Liam (not top) have moved into the living room position (pic 3) for desensitization. It was supposed to be just Liam, since he had already shown potential when he was with the 3 friendly boys, but he and Ryan were sleeping in the carrier together and I wasn't about to try to chase Ryan out!

Unfortunately, Liam has retreated back into his shell since the friendly boys graduated, and Ryan is providing the best possible negative reinforcement. Ryan has had this exact same expression on his face since the day he arrived, which does not bode well for his chances of becoming a housecat.

I need to check how long they've been here. If Ryan is still invisible by the 1 month point, I'll consider having him join Sydney, Patti, Maureen, Bill, and the Magnusons in the colony shed.

🎉 Graduation Day 🎉 for five friendly crowded house friends!
This was a tough group to let go, but it was time. Beezus made a huge transformation in the 3 months she was here. Karl's evolution was almost as impressive, once he was separated from sister Myshka.

The three growed-up boys - Ben, Georgie, and Luther - were almost ready to graduate the day they arrived. Took just a few weeks of loving and unlimited food to glow them up.
😸😸😸
It was a long day taking them to PAWS in Lynnwood, and it was bittersweet to come home without them. On the other hand, that cuts my population of inside cats by a third!

Mac update: it's only been a few days since he got his eye ointment, and his eyes already look so much better!

We have a spell of hot weather -- well, hot for us -- and I realized I couldn't keep him out on the south-facing catio. So he moved in with Giselle and Jimmy, in a vertical condo. That lasted almost 24 hrs, with him meowing constantly, before I had to drag out the 4 ft tall ex-pen and give him more room. That also lasted almost a day, until he realized he could easily jump the ex-pen and repeatedly body-slam the screen door to get my attention. I gave up and let him out into the main area this morning. I tried to keep him out of the living room, where Karl and Beezuz live, but he bullied his way in. Again, I surrendered, and just kept an ear open for any sort of ruckus.

He finally seemed to settle and sprawled out on the floor where he could keep an eye on me. When I came back inside I couldn't find him. I was slightly concerned that he had magically ported himself outside, until I finally remembered to look up... he'd found himself a perch. (pic 3)

He apparently feels the need to be where I am, which is going to make life complicated unless my household cats accept him. Not gonna happen!

But for now, while everyone is asleep, he's just hanging on the couch with me. (pics 1-2) He's going to be a wonderful pet!

Finally figured out a workable method to keep track of flea & worm meds for the current staff and students here at Miz Liz's that does NOT depend on using and losing random scraps of paper.

However, seeing all the names on that list, out in the open, all together like that?!? Even blows *my* mind, and I'm the one responsible for it!

Not even going to tell you how much cat food and wood pellet litter and Churu we're burning thru, but it's a lot.

Only ten more days until I take my top 5 friendly friends to a rescue, then I'll be able to spend more time socializing the B and C students so they can graduate, too.

But it's going to take awhile to get our enrollment back to normal levels. I feel I've got a really efficient, economical feeding and litter routine worked out, but it's just SO MUCH right now! I could really use some help to get thru my Summer of Cat Love. If you're able, here are some options:

And finally, our most recent catches from the crowded house: Susie, (pics 1-2) and Julie (pics 3-4). Both were recipients of a luxurious spa(y) day at , courtesy of my grant from . Amazingly enough, neither of these girls was pregnant!

Interesting fact: Susie was actually the mama of the babies we thought were Atari's, way back in May.

They've been here about a week but I don't yet have a read on their sociability. We're all just hanging on for another 10 days or so, when hopefully I'll be taking five friendlies to a rescue. Then I'll have more space/time to spread everyone out and find out who wants to play ball.

Keep forgetting that I have some newbies to introduce! This is Mac, fka Fat Daddy. He's a local boy, a neglected pet that was abandoned when his person moved away. Estimated age is about 5 yrs old, and of course he was "intact."

He was snipped and vaxxed a few days ago at , courtesy of my grant from . I can't begin to tell you what a relief it is to take in a cat without stressing over the cost of the surgery!

First three pics are him flirting with me from inside his enclosure on my catio. Last pic is him getting prepped for surgery. As you can see, there's something going on with his eyes. Eyelids seem swollen, eyes are weepy, and when I wipe them, there are tiny scabs and a tinge of blood. So off to the vet we go. Thankfully, he's super loving and completely handleable so there should be no problem giving him any meds he needs.

Magic Moments, part 1: Beezus, formerly Minnie.
So much has happened, I'm so far behind! Let's see... when we last left our girl (a month ago!) Minnie had decided to be a friendly friend. I moved her and Giselle to the bedroom to practice house manners. All was progressing (pics 1, 2) until Minnie started bullying Giselle. So Minnie regained her status as living room kitty. I finally figured out a reasonable way to close off part of that space so she could work on her free-range skills. (pic 4) And over the past week or two she has become my best friend! 😻 She told me her name was really Beezus Price, and that she really wanted to become my #7 cat. 😱 Pics 5-7 demonstrate that she is a fetcher, and she loves her mousies! Wasn't long before she started following me around like a puppy. 🥲 And yes, she still likes to yell when I'm not within view.
This formerly shut-down kitty is ready for adoption!

And then there were 13*!
Kotya (now Karl) is back. He and sister Myshka were transferred to the socialization program in late May. It eventually became clear that Myshka was bogarting the human attention and picking on him!

I've seen that dynamic before in sibling pairs over about 3 months old, when one is dominant and bullies the other. The best chance for socialization in that case is to split them up! Remember Bloo/Blue and Roz/Red from last year? They were 8 year old siblings that everyone thought were bonded. Turns out they weren't - they were just used to being together, and brother Bloo was very subtly dominating his more passive sister Roz. I adopted Bloo because he was diagnosed with kidney disease but I realized that Roz deserved her own family. She went up for adoption, found her family, no longer having to compete with Bloo! Whereas Bloo is cat 6/6 around here so he has to compete with everyone! Ah, karma...

So here are pics of Karl/Kotya today, about 5 weeks ago when they transferred to the PPP, and way back on May 7th, when he was caught. I think we can get this boy back on track in no time!

*So at Miz Liz's there are now 13 from the crowded house, 12 Magnusons, plus 6 of my own. I refuse to do the math.

It's the most wonderful time of the... week! (?) Time for kitten updates! Here are our little gray floofs that we rescued about 3 weeks ago. They've had their intake so they're legit fosters! Their foster mom is head over heels for these three wee boys: Soba, Mochi, and Miso. They're about 6½ weeks now but not quite 1½ pounds yet - they're healthy, just a bit small for their age.

The last pic is their beautiful mama Maureen, caught a few days later. She missed her Spa(y) Day appointment due to having outsmarted her crate 🤦🏻‍♀️ and it took a few days to find her hiding place. She finally joined the Spay Day Grant crew on July 3rd! As you can see from the pic, she was thrilled...

With Kitten Season in full swing, finding placement for even the friendly crowded house colony members has become a challenge. I had planned for another trapping expedition prior to the mid-July spay day, but they're already stacked up like cordwood around here! (I'm not going to tell you how many, but it's a number greater than I wouId prefer. 😬) I heard that the preggo we missed last time had her kittens 😮‍💨 so she's sheltering in place for now. Also heard there's one more female running around - it seems important to at least get that one done this month!

🥳 Recent adoption alert!! 🥳
I think I forgot to tell you that Krin and Lexi were both adopted from ! Lexi was trapped from the crowded house 5/11, the same day as Krin and the two mamas with all those kittens, but she was young enough that she needed some of that good ol' fostering. Last pic is one of Lexi the day she went to foster. Look at that ear fluff!!

More kitten updates: Look at these fuzzy dumplings!! This is Mama Atari and her 4 nuggets (pic 5), one of the two mamas w/ neonates we caught about 6 weeks ago. Unfortunately, it turned out that Atari was NOT the mama of these kittens 😬 and she was adopted out as a barn cat (Alani, pic 6). The babies struggled to regain traction on the growth curve, but thanks to some incredible fosters, here they are! I don't know their new names, but I do know their current foster has already adopted the gorgeous, formerly-blonde kitten in pic 3. 😻 The rest of the crew will be ready for adoption in a few weeks.

p s. The other mama+babies were transferred to . I called and learned that that litter had the correct mama, which was a huge relief!

In order: Liam, Ryan, Luther (Possum), Ben, Jimmy, Bill, and Georgie. All boys, for a change! But where's Maureen? Well, somehow she made her escape last night. I still can't figure out how she did it!

Luther, Ben, Jimmy, and Georgie are all friendly. Liam and Ryan are 6-month-old siblings, and I'm hoping they'll be open to my overtures now that their trouble puffs are gone. Bill is said to be unsocialized so I'll have to wait to see what his path will be once the testosterone ratchets down.

I've written this post three times and keep fat-fingering the buttons and deleting it! 😭 This is Ryan (top) and Margaret, probable littermates from the crowded house colony. Ryan arrived in mid-June, Margaret came in mid-Sept. This is their first time free-roaming in the living room together. Just noticed a few mins ago that they both have right ear tips, making them almost identical except for a slight size difference! 👯‍♀️ Ryan is wary and cautious but I think he remembers being here before. Margaret is curious but Ryan won't let her approach. Magic Moments, part 2: Giselle 😻🙌🏻🪄 This one really got me. 🥲 Giselle has been here since the end of April. At first we called her Poor Mama, because, shortly before she was trapped, she gave birth in the crowded house but *whispers* the other cats ate her babies. 💔😭 Got her fixed and let her settle in. She was not interested in any of my bullsh!t, always hunched into a ball, staring (glaring?) at me with those big blue eyes. I didn't have much time to dedicate to her, but I tried to help her get used to being here, moving her from space to space, exposing her to household activity over time. 🕦🕧🕐🕜🕑 About a month ago, I gave her the run of the Home Simulation Chamber (front bedroom.) She would hide whenever I entered, but she'd also sit at the screen door and watch my cats. Eventually, she approached me for her daily Churu and let me pet her!! 🥲🙌🏻 She is still pretty skittish, but gets more confident every day. If I can get one quick pet in as she scoots by, she'll come back for real pets. Minnie has been here for over a month, and hadn't made a peep or ventured out of her carrier when I was nearby. I moved her to the living room a week ago to join Krin and Giselle in my "passive socialization class." 😹 Well, three days ago something switched on, and this happened... and kept on happening for the next day or so! 😬 She constantly called out to my cats with just about every sound she could think of! When she sounded off, I'd respond to her in irritatingly positive tones then go pet her. Of course she didn't want me to pet her, she wanted my cats, but she tolerated it. It was one of those weird magical socialization breakthroughs that seem to happen just when you get that feeling that "this cat just isn't going to progress any further." And, fortunately, she's now got her frequency and volume under control! Join me for ☕Coffee with Krin!😻 I am always surprised when - seemingly out of the blue - an under-socialized cat in a holding pattern for weeks will just decide "OK, I'm in!" and start actively allowing contact. I'm especially thrilled because I just don't have time to work with Krin, relying instead on what I half-jokingly call "passive socialization", sitting in the room with my coffee in the morning, playing my favorite-but-creepy "wanna sniff my finger?" game when I bring in food, etc. I try to carve out time for a few Churu sessions, but that's about all I got right now.
