We have a bouncy teenage labrador boy staying. He's learning some impulse control - waiting until sent to retrieve a ball - and is now deeply asleep, having had sufficient physical and mental exercise!

This is a dog not a baby. On the whole, they do not like being picked up and held like infants. What a dog likes is games, walks, food, other dogs and work appropriate to the breed.

I'm bothered to comment on someone else's post for the sake of those dogs who are owned by people who treat them as child substitutes - 'fur-babies', the possessions of 'pet parents' who dress them in children-style clothes rather than giving them a dog's life. The number of little tutus for sale online and in pet shops is testament to this.

This is very unfair on dogs. If you truly love them, give them what they need, rather than making them fit what you want them to be.

This is the advice I’ve just given to the owner of a dog with a bite history, who is having to deal with the approach of young children wanting to pet her dog:

‘I think that if there is any bite risk due to a child or a dog approaching too fast or getting too close, that the responsible thing to do is to use a muzzle.

A muzzle also warns a parent/carer or dog owner to be cautious, which will also cut the number of triggering approaches your dog must cope with.’

The debate on the Internet rumbles on: no dogs off lead in a public place EVER unless recall 100% vs let dogs run free and meet other dogs.

I’m on the side of dogs meeting dogs… and then walking with them and their owners, rather than stopping to play with dogs met along the way.

This is how young dogs are socialised and learn to speak their own ‘language’ and the younger this happens, the better they read other dogs’ emotions,p and interact appropriately.

To those who say, ‘But my dog is reactive and will bite’ the answer is ‘Muzzle any dog that presents a threat to dogs or people’.

Want to stop your dog from pulling on the lead?

Do not ever let them pull you forward ever again - even if you're in a hurry!

When they pull, stop dead and wait until the tension is off the lead. You may have to walk backwards until this happens.

Once your dog realises that pulling does nothing for them, they will stop.

PS A really powerful puller may go better for you in a Halti/Gentle Leader headcollar-type.
