Dogs need exercise, and this should be off-lead and in the company of other dogs where possible.

Obviously there will be some dogs that can only be walked on a lead because they are unable to get along with other dogs or people, have an injury or a bite history, but the majority can play and run with each other which will tire them out, and mentally stimulate them.

Those dogs who are able to walk and play together off-lead will be happy dogs, unlikely to be destructive due to boredom, and much more of a joy to their owners.

How to hold a lead so that there is NO chance of it being pulled out of your hand when a dog sees a cat/deer/other ‘must-have’…

If you arrange your lead like this, any sudden pull ‘locks’ the lead onto your hand.

This sharp-seeded grass is called foxtail, and it can work its way inside your dog's body and cause immense pain.

If you find it growing outside your house, then please either cut the shoots off at ground level and bin them, or dig it out. You will be saving dogs, cats and other animals a lot of potential harm.

Dogs go through a 'teenage' phase like humans, and you may find that your erstwhile obedient companion starts going a little deaf, despite all your recall groundwork.

It can be helpful to exercise them a couple of times a week - with permission - within a pack of older dogs, who will show them the ropes, help them remember what size they are, and provide good boundaries of what kind of behaviour is, and isn't acceptable. If you're buying a dog, be aware of provenance, and don't add to so many dogs' misery and the bank balance for those who make money in this way. Adopt, if you can.
