Sooty's Sanctuary Non-profit animal rescue founded in 2018 in Pensacola, FL

22/08/2024

Unfortunately, due to lack of funds and public interest it looks like we will have to cease operations for the foreseeable future. We hope to one day return stronger than ever, but in the interim we will as an organization continue to support the animals still in our care and hope to keep getting updates from our awesome adopters, volunteers, and supporters. It's been a wild ride these past few years and we hope we were able to make our community a better place in our own way.

Hey all! Giving Tuesday is coming up, and we could really use your help! We still have some dogs who have not yet found forever homes, and it is time for them all to get their annual vet check ups, shots, etc. I'm sure they would all love to get some special toys and treats for the holidays as well. We would be grateful for any help that you can give!

URGENT!! MUST HAVE A NEW FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME BY MARCH 15!

Are you looking for a fun-loving, smart, energetic new companion? Then Oreo is the dog for you! He is still pretty young, about 1.5 years old, so he is energetic and playful. He is completely potty trained, and does well with training, due to being very smart. He is super goofy, and he will always keep you laughing! He also LOVES other dogs, so would be very happy in a home with other dogs. His fosters love the head tilt he does when he hears music or animal noises on the TV, so they tried to recreate it in the video below.

URGENT!! MUST HAVE A NEW FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME BY MARCH 15!

Meet Diamond! This poor girl was returned to us, through no fault of her own, after 5 years with a family. She is a sweet, easygoing dog who just needs someone to give her another chance. She is older, about 10 years old, but she is still fun, and can have bursts of play energy from time to time. She LOVES walks, and cuddling up with her people. She is potty trained and leash trained.

Hey all. I am reaching out because we really need your help. You may have noticed we have pulled back a lot lately, in accepting new animals, in posting, in everything. Due to many unforseen factors (the landlord selling our facility, the untimely death of a beloved board member, health problems of another board member, etc.), and the lack of having enough fosters or volunteers, we have been struggling. We need to focus on getting forever homes for our existing animal, not only because they deserve it, but because I (Rosie) am having to move cross country to help take care of my sick mother. I cannot possibly take all 4 foster dogs who are in my house at the moment. I also have 4 dogs of my own, and I am going to have to move into my parents' house until I can find a new house to buy. They have 2 dogs already. Not to mention, it's been unfair to both my dogs, and the fosters. All 4 fosters are kept separate from each other, and our dogs. Some of our fosters are not good with other dogs, are selective, or our dogs don't like them. Because of this, my day consists of rotating who gets to be out and have time with us, go outside to potty, etc. I cannot continue this while caring for my mother, her dogs, and my dogs. And all the dogs involved deserve a home where they get to be out with people any time they are home.

I need to be in Oregon by the end of March at the latest. I have already taken more time than I wanted to to get out and help my mother, because I love all these dogs, and I feel like they are my responsibility to place in loving homes. But I need to beg for help now. My mom really needs me. Please, if you can help in any way (adopting, fostering, volunteering, donating, spreading the word), we need all the help we can get.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck by us and helped us in any way you could. We have been able to save many fur babies because of your help! We need your help one more time to get 4 more deserving dogs fur ever homes.

I will be posting about each individual dog through the week, but here they are below as well:

We have a dream,
It's to have a home,
By Halloween.

We can go alone,
and we'll even dress,
Like a gnome,
If that's your request.

Shamu is his name,
He's black and white,
And of great frame.

Her name is Allie,
She's special needs,
But very cuddly.

Please adopt one,
Or both of us,
A forever home,
Is all we want.

*LAST UPDATE: BOTH DOGS HAVE BEEN ADOPTED!!!! A huge thank you to everyone who helped get the word out!

*UPDATE*
Some of you may have seen this before, but they are still looking for homes for 2 dogs. IF AN ADOPTER, FOSTER, OR RESCUE ABLE TO TAKE THEM IN IS NOT FOUND BY SEPTEMBER 2, THEY WILL HAVE TO BE EUTHANIZED.

***URGENT NEED!***

Redfox rescue is closing PERMANENTLY, and we need fosters IMMEDIATELY!! We have other organizations who can take these pets if we can provide them with a foster. Please help!!

The animals need to be relocated to new homes ASAP, because, unfortunately, the owner of this rescue is having to move (due to health reasons) to a place that will not allow for her to continue operating a rescue.

IF THEY DO NOT HAVE HOMES BY SEPTEMBER 2ND, THEY WILL HAVE TO BE EUTHANIZED.

If interested in adopting or fostering, call Susan at 850.281.5557 (No Texts Please)

If you are a rescue interested in taking one or both dogs, contact Jenn at 770.605.2309. They are able to donate $900 to any rescue able to take both dogs, $450 to any rescue able to take one dog.

HERCULES:
Hercules is a white neutered male pit bull around 7/8 years old. He needs to be the only dog, unless he is with Gabe. He is very sweet, and great with cats. Older kids ok. He is blind. Up to date on shots.

GABE:
Gabe is about 7 years old. He has some bubbles on his side that we will pay to have biopsy done to confirm it's fatty tissue and not cancer. He is super sweet, playful, and great with cats. No other dogs, unless it's Hercules. He is fixed and up to date on all shots. He has storm anxiety.

They are not bonded, they can go together or separately.

Abby is Amazing!!

Abby is a very cute 8-9 year old diabetic girlie with Sooty’s Sanctuary (Pensacola, Florida). She would love to be your new love!! Abby gets along with other cats and loves people. She is fine with dogs but mostly just does her own thing and ignores them. She is so so easy to give insulin to once she's comfortable but takes about a week to adjust to a new home. In that time, they found giving special treats and wet food helps her adjust and trust faster. Other than being diabetic Abby doesn't have any other known medical concerns.

Abby will fit it very well in most homes!! You must be falling in love already, so check out the adoption info page here: https://www.sootyssanctuary.org/adopt/ and apply today to take Abby home!!

***Sooty's Sanctuary is happy to travel to place their special adoptables in their forever homes! Don't let distance deter you!

This morning we are highlighting Abby again. She is special needs in that she is diabetic. But that doesn't have to seem scary. She is in fact really easy to give insulin to and we have a video from her foster to show it!

*special note that Abby is not skinny, it's just that Shamu (adoptable) next to her is a 20 # cat 😅

Sweet Caroline is wondering why she's been overlooked by her forever family...

Yeah, okay, she doesn't like all of the dogs, all of the time. Slow introductions are best and that can be hard. Other than that she has shown to do well with cats (supervised), kids, and loves everyone she has met!

Need a friend to play with? She's ready!
Want someone to cuddle with? She'll climb right under the covers with you!

She really is a wonderful dog and is ready to find her forever family to play and snuggle with for the rest of her days. You can't help but to sing her namesake when she is around and will bring you lots of joy!

As fireworks celebrations kick off this weekend, be sure to keep your pets safe. Keep all pets indoors at all times, possibly in kennels in a dark, calm, cool place. It is comforting to many dogs. Also, some dogs may chew up and eat things they shouldn't when they are scared, so best to keep them in a safe place where they can't do that. Only take them out on leash to go potty. Too many fur babies go missing during 4th of July celebrations, and we don't want to see that happen to anyone!

*UPDATE*
Some of the animals have found fosters or permanent homes, but urgent placement is still needed for 3 cats and 2 dogs.

***URGENT NEED!***

Redfox rescue is closing PERMANENTLY, and we need fosters IMMEDIATELY!! We have other organizations who take these pets if we can provide them with a foster. Please help!!

The animals need to be relocated to new homes ASAP, because, unfortunately, the owner of this rescue is having to move (due to health reasons) to a place that will not allow for her to continue operating a rescue.
We are waiting on a hard deadline, however it will likely be around JUNE 30th. There are 6 cats and 2 dogs left who need to find new homes!

PETEY:
(dark tabby color)
This little guy likes to come to you on his own terms. He is a little shy at first, but affectionate when he trusts you. Is that your typical cat or what? Good with cats and older kids but has not been around dogs. He is approximately two years old, vaccinated, and neutered. Call Susan at 850.281.5557 (No Texts Please)

THELMA and LOUISE:
(Calico kitties)
Thelma and Louise are sisters and are a bonded pair that must stay together. Both Thelma and Louise like to be loved on, but Thelma is on the shyer side and will come to you when she wants attention. Louise is the more outgoing kitty once she gets to know you. They are both wonderful, but special kitties that need a special person/family that will have the patience that they need to bloom. They are both vaccinated, spayed and approximately six years old. Can you open your heart to adopting two kitties? We are also open to a foster home for them until a permanent one can be found. Call Susan at 850.281.5557 (No Texts Please)

HERCULES:
Hercules is a white neutered male pit bull around 7/8 years old. He needs to be the only dog. Cats ok. Older kids ok. He is blind.

GABE:
Gabe is about 7 years old. He has some bubbles on his side that we will pay to have biopsy done to confirm it's fatty tissue and not cancer. He is super sweet and used to cats. He has 1 dog brother (Hercules) that he gets along pretty well with, but he likes to dominate him. He is fixed and up to date on all shots. He has storm anxiety.

Sooty’s Origins

The whole origins of Sooty’s Sanctuary from our Founder:

When I was 16, I moved with my Dad to Bahrain the summer before my Junior year of high school. It’s a tiny island country just off the coast of Saudi Arabia. We lived there for a year and it was the best year of my life. It was where I met Sooty.

I’ve always had a love for animals and had pets at home but only had limited volunteer experience by this time. The very first friend I made was a volunteer at the BSPCA (Bahrain Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals) and changed my life forever by inviting me to join her on her next visit. After that first visit, I was hooked. It was honestly a punch in the gut, a slap in the face, a huge wake up call. I had never seen animal cruelty, neglect, abandonment, etc to this extent. I had never seen a facility as large and still so crowded as this one. I had never seen so many animals so desperately in need of someone to simply show they cared and not all people were bad. I found my calling. I knew one day this was what I wanted to do. Between my summer job, school, and extracurricular activities, I volunteered every chance I got. At the very least, this was where I spent most of my weekends. Cleaning, feeding, loving, playing, grooming, I did it all, even occasionally assisting in minor medical treatments. I jumped at the chance to do anything the directors and staff would allow or ask of me. My Dad still talks about how I came home everyday covered in p*e, poo, dirt, vomit, &/or soaked in water or sweat. I don’t even remember that. I only remember how much I loved every minute of it.
