I love working with vintage material, every piece has lived an entire lifetime before it finds its way to me where I give it another chance to be loved. When people ask why I save fabric from landfill for my designs instead of buying new, I say why not? Think of the centuries worth of textiles that have been made and are still here just sitting around in cupboards or your Nana's attic, surely it's better to use what we have before creating more waste for the future...
Besides, dogs like to wear vintage too and that should be a good enough reason for anyone.

How many of us have made this face at the sound of the door bell?

Ellis and Sookie are very proud to announce that they have indeed taught Ken all about barking at the bell🤦🏻‍♀️ Every morning the postman brings with him a glorious cacophony of dogs on every level of my house, at least they've found a common interest.
Today I am finally diving into a very special custom order of the cutest beach bag and upcycled vintage skirt, as much as I love making dog accessories it's fun to have something a little different to challenge my skills. Mother's day looks a little different this year, with our foster dog Ken keeping me on my toes it's certainly not the lazy Sunday I usually have but honestly I don't mind.
It has got me thinking about what mum means though...

Mother is a special word reserved for our most precious caregivers, some of them birthed us, some of them adopted us and some of them simply found us along the way and loved us with their whole hearts. I know this day isn't easy for a lot of people, having lost my own mum to cancer there is always a little sadness and attached to it but there is also a whole lot of love from both my human and dog children along with the good memories that I like to focus on. Whoever or however you celebrate I am wishing you all a very happy mother's day.

Beautiful bandanas to bring a bit of spring.

I don't really mind the rain but all this mud is taking the p**s a bit don't you think? You may think it's a bad idea to wear your bright bandanas when every puddle is so tempting but I can assure you they wash up beautifully.

One of my favourite things about seventies fabric is they were obsessed with futuristic convenience back then and many of the materials produced were made to repel stains and remain crisp to reduce ironing. I'm here for it.
So don't be afraid to wear something bright on your mucky adventures, it might just help your pawrents spot you after a mud bath😂

Where did the weekend go? Turns out time flies when you're training a puppy. When I tell you my life has been consumed by our foster dog Ken I am absolutely not exaggerating. With half term almost over I need to find some work/dog balance and fast...but I'll think about that tomorrow.
Today is our last day off together and the sun is shining so Lucy and I are going to have a little girl time before we make Ken's first ever Tailor & Paws collar and lead. Maybe today will be the day he finally decides to leave his mojo dojo casa kitchen, wish us luck.

I know I have a thing for florals now but I spent a huge proportion of my life pondering existence while listening to Depeche Mode and deep down that little goth queen still reigns. Who else is ready for their first pancake day?
If you haven't met Ken yet you are in for a treat, we've been fostering him since the beginning of January and today is his first ever pancake day. This little man has come on leaps and bounds although there have been hiccups along the way, he's even won over Ellie with his exceptional cuddles.

When we decided to foster Ken we knew our lives would look a little different what I didn't realize is how much his journey through his trauma would change me. As you may know I've been struggling with my mental health and it seems like this little lost dog is giving me a lesson in how to let those bad thoughts go and find a little bit of my own brave. Dogs really are the most incredible creatures, it's no wonder they have inspired my entire business and everything I do. Tailor & Paws is my biggest dream, the one that scares and elates me more than anything else but it's the dogs that got me here and for that I will do everything I can to repay that kindness. Thank you dogs, where would we be without you?

When life gives you lemons....make a better harness.

I probably don't mention this enough but do you know I make custom fit harnesses? Well I do and there's a very good reason why I don't make standard sizes.

How many times have you ordered a harness online or even in a shop just to have it not fit properly? Maybe it's okay in the chest but not the waist, or the neck is a bit snug when the body is perfect.. it's very annoying and I know I put up with it for a long time before I decided to make my own. Like us humans, dogs bodies are all different and standard sizing just doesn't cut it in my opinion that's why all Tailor & Paws harnesses are made to order with your exact measurements.

Just a reminder that I do actually have more to my personality than Ken😂

As the days get longer my heart turns to colour and light to beautiful patterns and the things that make us do a little joy squeak as we fall a little bit in love with them.
I like to imagine the people who felt that way about these fabrics over the years, the girl who picked them for her new bedroom or the husband who chose them for his partner's birthday. They've been a part of so many lives whether adorning the unmade bed of a teenager running late for school, or transformed into a mighty fort to play in and whisper secrets to friends. Then I imagine eventually they were put in a cupboard, pushed to the back as new things became the favourites and in time were forgotten until I came along to transform them and give them a whole new chance to be loved as they once were.

When you think running your own business is going to be glamorous but you're making samples on the kitchen floor so you can keep your dog company....There are worse ways to spend the day I suppose💛

Life has most certainly changed since our foster dog Ken arrived, we are doing our best to keep him happy and build his confidence. Some of the ways we're helping him along is by doing normal things around him like cooking, reading books, cleaning up, boiling the kettle for those essential cups of tea and now a bit of pattern making. Who knows, one day soon he may be brave enough to try on his very own Tailor & Paws collar., I wonder which one would suit him best?

Today's the day! I have been so nervous about our fostering adventure but I've woken up with the kenergy of ten Ken's💪

I want to thank everyone who has offered me such amazing advice for setting up our home, introducing the dogs, feeding and all manner of things...it really does take a village and I'm so grateful for mine.
I'll do my best to record what I can but my priority is a safe hand over and journey home with as little stress as possible for our little guy. I know it will be very emotional for his adopter as well and I hope to offer them as much support as I can on this very difficult day. Now it's time to get my girls out for a long stomp before we venture forth on this fostering adventure, wish us luck.

It's officially twixmas, that weird time between Christmas and New Year where time ceases to exist in its regular form and we all just seem to bob about until the new year new me crowd takes hold of the Internet.

This month my head has been buzzing with ideas about where I want Tailor & Paws to go next year so why not chat it out now while everyone is still a bit dazed from the holidays? You all know how much I adore our furry friends and how important creating sustainable alternatives for their every day essentials is to me (that will never change) but I want to step out of my comfort zone a bit more and lean into my creativity to bring you bold new designs that are maybe not your everyday kind of garment. I want to make silly things, frilly things, bright bold exciting things, I want to be impractical and a little frivolous even but with integrity. I want to be in my 1971 Vivienne westwood era and I want you to come along with me. Next year alongside my classic dog accessories there will be a whole new range of fun yet functional fashion pieces for both hounds and humans. Honestly I can't wait to get started and I really hope you enjoy the way Tailor & Paws is evolving because you and your pets are my inspiration 💛

Channeling all of festive magic today.

Thank all the good things this horrible sickness seems to have lifted and I'm diving head first into festive fun. I feel like we've missed so much of the Christmas build up but we're not going to let that stop us. Lucy and I are off to do a little shopping on the barbican and maybe a spot of lunch at our favourite little cafe. December already, is it just me or did that feel like the shortest November on record? I thought it about time I let you in on my schedule for the next few weeks.

The days are flying by but don't worry there's still time to get your festive orders in. The website will remain open for guaranteed Christmas delivery until the 12th of December, all orders placed after that will be made but I can't promise it will get to you before the big day.

Vintage vibes

A little love goes a long way . I pour a whole lot of love into every piece I make but the vintage collection demands a little more than the others. These precious gems have already lived a long life and its my job to bring them back to their former glory before they're remade into something new. Whether it's carefully removing trimming for another project (nothing goes to waste here) or taking care of the odd pesky mark, every inch is inspected, mended and made like new again. This is the job that gives me the most joy, sometimes I think the fabric loves me too . I'll be at Native Makers again at the beginning of June with a bucket load of new makes from this fantastic treasure.
