I have a great new student this summer. She has her first pony, and she is doing her first event this weekend. Yesterday's jump lesson was tough. She had some steering issues and even hit the dirt once. She was upset but she worked through it. We talked about it and we hung out in the barn afterwards. She went home smiling, but I wrote her a text that became something of a manifesto on this eventing life:

Hi! I have an observation from my life with horses that might be helpful for you.
Horses play two roles in our lives. One role is the relationship/pet/friend role. That is a lifestyle for us and it's a romantic, wonderful thing. The other is a high performance/competitive/athletic role in our lives. That role is challenging, compelling, and sometimes rewarding.
I want you to know that at the event this weekend, win or lose or get rained out, it is one day out of many days and the horse will play both his roles for you: he will be your friend and he will be your high-performance challenge. There will be ups and downs on the day, and we will all enjoy spending it together!
The two roles don't always go together very well, and that can be frustrating. I try to enjoy both sides of horses and to let the relationship part make me feel better when the high performance part is painful. I think you do that very well.
There will be some things in your life that you choose to work hard at and to be very good at. I chose riding as my primary thing. I don't regret that. The lifestyle and the relationships with the horses repay me for the sacrifices I have made for the high performance part.
If you choose riding as one of your things (as a hobby or as a profession) it will be full of ups and downs! You will get to know lots of great horses, you'll go to some beautiful places and meet some cool people, and you will be challenged athletically and emotionally.
I love spending time with you and teaching you, and I hope you feel the same!
