Nels point blank refused to go for a walk today, was happy to let me get my coat and boots on but two steps out of the gate decided the ground was too wet and pulled me back in 🤦♀️

We’ve been working on “middle” this week 🙂
I put her in a sit position and walk away, shout middle and she comes running to get her sweet.
I know this is basic but it’s more about the engagement - learning that learning is fun 🦴🥩🦮

As she’s hit the terrible 2s I’m going to start adding turmeric paste to preserve her joints and ligaments and aid any inflammation - I’ll post the recipe 🥩🦴🦮

I like this and it resonates. When a dog has a bad experience with another dog it’s likely to remember that experience and become anxious. For example when Nelly was a baby I took her over the road to meet my neighbours dog, I was holding her and the other dog barked in her face, I took her away, now she loves other dogs but if it barks at her she won’t go near it. Every dog picks fight or flight. She’s a flight girl and that’s another reason I keep her on a long line. If she ever decides fight I’ve got her, if she decides flight she isn’t gonna end up under a car.

Chicken mince, turkey thigh mince, carrot, sweet potato, broccoli, kale, spinach, chickpeas and kidney beans.
If ur questioning why I’m giving the bitch chickpeas and kidney beans it’s because legumes are an excellent source of vitamin A, C, K, iron, magnesium and antioxidants. They are also cheap as chips. I don’t want to give her rice as a filler. Boiled white rice is of absolutely no nutritional benefit to your dog and also hard for them to digest 🐶

Threshold Training.
Equally as vital as recall.
We all know the story of when Nelly decided to take herself to my mums, across a main road, no lead, no collar, giving absolutely zero s**ts about me calling her in tears to come back, she knew where she was going and nothing was stopping her.
Since that day we’ve been practicing this.
She sits, she makes eye contact, she waits for me to release her from the sit or me to go first.

So long as your dog is fed daily you shouldn’t be judged on what you give, some little souls don’t even get that.
It’s your choice what you give your dog. It’s my choice to home cook for Nelly - I quite like the nutritional science behind it all. I like knowing what every supplement, vitamin and mineral does and giving her whatever is needed to keep her healthy and super fit.
I’m not perfect tho, I’m not gonna sit here and say we don’t share a digestive or 3 every night cos we do!
Dinners below are human grade -
Beef mince, sweet potato, carrot, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, chickpeas and butterbeans. Took me 30 mins to knock that up and cost around £6
I’ll supplement it with crushed up eggs shells for calcium and collagen and chuck some blueberries in for good measure 👌❤️

Took Nels to a beginners class tonight, I’ve worked hard with her for 2 weeks so I went there thinking she’ll p**s it.
She was so ecstatic to see other dogs/people she couldn’t of been less interested in me 😂 fml

What do you think the first thing you teach your new puppy should be?
Learn from my mistake and play RECALL games FIRST.
I didn’t do this and I am now paying the price and having to work hard to convince Nelly I can be fun.
Selfishly I was more worried about getting my steps in than playing games when out with her. We don’t care about steps anymore. We have a long line lead - we have balls and nels absolute favourite, a tug toy. She doesn’t give a s**t about other dogs if I’m willing to play tug of war.
Start in your own home, learn what motivates ur dog, what they love to play with and use it with a reward upon their return right from the start 🩷

Lola - my angel, never put a foot wrong - well she did eat the contents of an ashtray and got herself stoned and she did smash in 7 Easter eggs but we can over look that as that’s down to human error.
Nelly - the devil dog, she will eat it, roll in it, shred it or s**t on it - whatever it is. She also insists on being little spoon so again all is forgiven.

Hi, I’m Carrie, like most people I love dogs. I say love it’s more of an obsession.
There’s always been a family dog but in 2014 I got my own dog Lola, she was an Old Tyme Bulldog. Lola didn’t really require any training, she slept 23hrs a day but she was loyal, loving, and kept me going through the darkest moments of my CF so when I lost her in 2021 I knew I’d never replace her but I didn’t want to be dogless.
I’d been given a second chance at life with a new medicine that made everything better for me so i wanted a dog a little more active than Lola but also loyal and loving.
After extensive research and searching for the right one I found Nelly, my Staffordshire Bull Terrier and let her into my home and my heart.
Unlike Lola, Nelly has tested my sanity many times. She does need training and lots of it.
I’ll tell you all about Nelly’s adventures in due course.
I decided I want to train Nelly myself, big decision as that means training myself but we’ve made a good start and we are both loving the learning. It’s made a huge improvement to our relationship where I didn’t realise it could be any better.
I’ve also gone into Canine Nutrition which you may or may not know diet can play a huge role in your dogs behaviour.
All that being said this page is to take you on a training journey with Nelly.
I’ll drop tips as I’m learning. If you need any advice you can ask and if I don’t know it I’ll do my best to find the right way for your breed.
I’m going down the positive reinforcement training route. The end goal for me is to not only own a dog that listens to me but to be able to teach other dogs on a 1:1 basis (and owners).
I’ll post the good, the bad and the ugly as we may as well have a laugh along the way.
