*** ADOPTED ***
We have to wonder what kind of life poor BOSS had before arriving at the shelter. He was limping due to osteoarthritis and apparently his former parent did nothing to address his pain, and his left ear was badly deformed due to a hematoma. His owner simply called the police and said they better come pick up his dog because Bossâ behavior was changing (after 9 years). We are beginning to wonder if he had abused Boss just before the police arrived and that was why Boss was growling at everyone. The parent probably didnât want to admit it to police when they arrived at the door. Or maybe Bossâ parent made it all up just to get rid of his dog. Either way, Boss is waiting at the shelter for a new family, standing at the front of his kennel and wagging his tail at anyone who goes by, hoping for some kind words or a treatâŚ.a totally different dog. He loves pets, he loves to lean into your legs for a good cuddle, and has been a good, sweet guest. Look at his poor face and the way he hangs his head, almost in defeat. We want Boss to have a new life, a better life than he has had so far, a loving and experienced retirement home where he will know the kind of care and happiness that appears to have eluded him. If you can take him in, MESSAGE OUR PAGE for assistance.
What my friends at ACC say about me:
I can go home today!
My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet.
It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children.
Iâll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life.
I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

INTAKE BEHAVIOR:
Date of intake: 26-Jun-2024
Summary: ESU reports baring teeth, growling.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial: 27-Jun-2024
Summary: Wagging tail and seeking attention and treats.
ENERGY LEVEL:
We have no history on Boss so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Level 4
Recommendations:
No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:
No children (under 13): Due to Boss's reported defensive aggression from the previous owner, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home.
Potential challenges:
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Boss has been reported to be aggressive with his owner, but the owner did not go into detail on what happened. ESU did report baring teeth and growling when being removed from the home. They had little information about what happened. All he knows was that the dog was baring teeth and growling at ESU and the responding officers. They managed to leash Boss and shove him into a crate before bringing him back to the precinct .We recommend a slow approach and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Boss. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Boss's quality of life. See handout on Decompression Period.
