Even though I am a vet, my practice is providing holistic care advice through prophylactic supplementation care. I have not performed a dental procedure in a few years, therefore it always advised to go to a general practice vet that performs these procedures daily so that anesthesia or sedation is performed safely, effectively, and wakes up the animal as quick as possible so there are minimal side effects. Annual routine veterinary examinations are extremely important. Getting your pets eyes checked yearly can prevent eye disease from occurring. Breeds that are considered to be more susceptible to cataracts include the American Cocker Spaniel, Labrador Retriever, Boston Terrier, the Welsh Springer Spaniels, and smaller dogs like poodles, Maltese, Yorkies, and chihuahuas.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats.
Periodontal diseases are mainly the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth.
Ear disease is also common in many animals especially if they are prone to allergic outbreaks.
Drooping ears, esp in poodles, with excessive hair growing in the ear canals are factors predisposing the dogs to this disease and clearly have a genetic basis. The ear carriage is part of their breed standard. There may be also other genetic factors, such as those associated with atopy (allergic skin disease), which is a continual area of research.
Please make it a priority to get your animals examined yearly by your local veterinarian!

ZooPharmaCognosy is the science of how animals self-medicate themselves in the wild. I am a second generation zoopharmacognosy veterinarian. For over 40 years, I have been lucky and blessed to follow in the footsteps of a world renowned Orthomolecular specialist and doctor, Dr. Norma Pestano. My roots are growing up understanding how phytonutrients help our human and animal bodies be in a natural healthy state. Two weeks ago, I was invited to present at AnimalCon 2023 by Brian Barczyk and Brett Raymer, two colleagues that I truly admire. I spoke on Zoopharmacognosy and how it relates to animal eye health. I met many animal influencers and ty for letting me perform an eye exam on your animals. I thank you for inspiring me on ways to grow my social media channels. Many of you explained to me that you have to be consistent, post everyday, and morning is best. As a mom of 2 and a practicing veterinarian, it is difficult to find time to video, edit, write a cool description and post daily, I commend all of you for your hard work. I am going to try my hardest to be consistent in posts because all of you have shown me that even when you are tired or not feeling well, you get in front of the camera, because you have a message to share and help animals.
I made a video with my daughter, Jovi, the Little Vet Explorer, teaching the next generation about ZooPharmaCognosy. If you like this video can you please follow us on Instagram and TikTok, we are making a goal this year to grow our following.
