“Harper” had an excellent training lesson with his parents and Carol today! He did one small soft bark when Carol entered today but quickly went for his lickimat and worked on that while his parents gave Carol his weekly behavioral update. He’s been doing well and his parents are working hard on all his homework! He handled this week’s fireworks wonderfully! Today’s lesson covered:
—Discussed ways to help “Harper” get used to novel visitors (auditory barriers like white noise/classical music, visual barriers, giving him frozen lickimats to work on, greeting one new person at a time where he feels most comfortable, giving him breaks from guests, etc.).
—Introduced “Harper” to a flirt pole toy, which he enjoyed! He also played fetch and tug a little bit with Carol today (brave boy)!
—Reviewed his touch, place, and sit cues.
—Discussed how to continue working on pen and crate desensitization.
—Went for a short walk to work on reinforcing orientation to the handler and marking/rewarding loose leash walking.
—Discussed ways to set him up for success for an upcoming party his family is hosting.
—Discussed generalization of behavior cues.
—Recommended counterconditioning work outside of the home (watching unfamiliar people while working on a lickable treat).

Great work to “Harper” & his family today!

A perfect truth bomb Infographic from ! When you have a dog with behavioral problems, you want to work on: management, training, behavioral modification, etc. to get them in a good spot before adding more work for yourself with a second dog. Managing a multi-dog household takes a lot of time and energy (trust us, we know 🤣).

“Sophie” rocked her training lesson with her parents and Shannon today! They have been doing a fantastic job with a slow separation anxiety desensitization protocol as well as crate training. “Sophie” is comfortable in the crate with the door almost closed for a few minutes at a time! Today, they worked on:
—A review of her positive interrupter cue and clicker mechanics.
—Introduced a verbal recall word.
—Added criteria to the touch movement cue.
—Practiced some familiar cues outside to work in a higher distraction environment.
—Introduced a leave-it behavior.

Fantastic work!

“Meaty” had a wonderful training lesson with his parents and Shannon today! Today’s lesson covered:
—Training work behind a barrier while Shannon entered to prevent over-aroused jumping behaviors.
—“Meaty” showed off his new paw shake trick!
—Introduced the LAT engage/disengage drill.
—Practiced the front door impulse control drill (this time with Shannon pretending to leave).
—Refresher on leash manner foundations inside the home and in the front yard.
—Reviewed the importance of decompression free sniffing time.

Great work Mister!

“Harper” had a spectacular 3rd training lesson with his family and Carol today! He is getting more comfortable with Carol each lesson. Today he barely barked when she entered, worked on his lickimat while she got the weekly update from his family, was comfortable enough to play fetch for a little bit with Carol, was able to perform touch and find-it for her, was able to take a few treats from her hand, and even allowed some petting! 👏👏 His family got a new dog crate for him to try to help get him comfortable with a new style of crate to make crating a more positive experience for him (this week they just have the crate out for him to explore on his own, and they put treats in it occasionally for him to find). They also have the dog gate that can be configured into a play pen for him to use if needed as well. Today’s lesson “Harper” worked on:
—Reviewed his touch & find-it movement cues.
—Reviewed free shaping of a place behavior. Because his family worked hard on this all week and he’s doing great, today they added the verbal cue place.
—Began working on place work inside the puppy pen, starting with it pretty open in a wide U shape and then slowly closing it in to resemble more of a crate. He was sooooo brave with this!
—Introduced “break” as a release cue.

Great work today to “Harper” and his dedicated family!!

“Frankie”, “Frieda”, & “Greta” had an excellent training lesson with Shannon today! “Frankie” is fearful around visitors in the home so she had her first counterconditioning and desensitization session today. Her big goal for the day was to be able to continuously eat while Shannon entered the home and spoke to “Frankie’s” mom out of sight. “Frankie” did very well behind a blanketed crate and a gate with a visual barrier! They discussed: scheduling an appointment with a DACVB for “Frankie’s” fear and anxiety and how to take baby steps with counterconditioning. With “Frieda”, they worked on:
—Introduced reward marker training (“Greta” was present for this too).
—Practiced “four on the floor” to prevent jumping.
—Introduced movement cues.
—Discussed fluency in training.

“Charlie” & “Lucy” had an excellent training lesson with their mom and Carol today. They met at a local park where they worked on:
—Each dog individually practiced loose leash walking skills.
—Each dog individually practiced some place work with 360 circle down stays.
—Both dogs practiced movement cues.
—“Lucy” practiced some LAT engage/disengage work any time strangers appeared. She did fabulous with that.
—Both dogs practiced responding to their positive interruptor cue.
—After their individual sessions, both dogs worked on leash skills together and some relaxation work on the cot while their mom chatted with Carol.

Excellent work to these two and their mom today!!

“Lucky” had a great training lesson with his family and Shannon today. They spent some time discussing various topics (motion sickness/ car anxiety, leash manners, and boundary training for the street). While they talked, “Lucky” did a FANTASTIC job lounging by Shannon for the occasional reinforcer (he calmly placed his head in her lap to wait as well). They also discussed treat hierarchies, generalization of behaviors, and counterconditioning/desensitization! For training exercises, they worked on:
—Introductory recall work.
—Stationing on the handler’s left side.
—Reviewed the touch and find-it movement cues.

Great job “Lucky”!

“Fergus” had a great Adventure Training Lesson with Shannon today! He explored the park with “Elodie” so that he could have a walking buddy. He didn’t alarm bark at a single of his typical triggers (tennis players, kids on playground, people with strollers). He offered check-ins and responded to a positive interrupter cue to disengage from staring if he could not offer it. He was able to watch for several seconds before easily turning around to engage with Shannon instead. He also worked on:
—Worked towards 360 degree circle down stays (“Fergus” was comfortable with 180 in both directions today).
—Relaxation exercises in the shade.
—Differentiating between cues ex. sit and down right next to the playground stairs where he would typically offer place.
—Long line recall.
—Canine parkour exercises.

Great job “Fergus”!

“Luna” had a lovely Adventure Training Lesson with Shannon today! She went out on one of her usual hike routes and alternated between quiet decompression sniffari time and some challenging training exercises (based on her success level). She practiced:
—The 1-2-3 pattern game.
—Responding to her positive interrupter cue.
—Movement cues.
—Canine parkour exercises.
—Sit & down stays.
—Treat snuffling after training cues to prevent anxiety and transition back to walking.

Good girly “Luna”!

“Nilla” had a nice training lesson with Shannon and her family today! They discussed some questions about crate training, potty training, and ensuring “Nilla’s” safety while out in the yard to prevent escapes. Today, they worked on:
—Reviewed reward marker mechanics.
—Practiced clean mechanics for a sit behavior.
—Practiced name recognition and recall.
—Practiced some crate training games.
—Worked on targeting the potty bells.
—Continued practicing leave-it.

Great job to “Nilla” and her family!

“Ralphie” had a wonderful training lesson with Shannon today! Since it’s been a few weeks since they last met for a session, they spent some time reviewing the previous homework exercises and training topics: place, down, potty training, and separation. Today, they worked on:
—Worked on adding the 3 D’s of behavior fluency (distance, duration, & distraction) to his place behavior.
—Practiced cleaning up some reward marker mechanics.
—Introduced fading food lures.
—Introduced the release cue break.
—Discussed the concept of a reinforcement hierarchy.
—Went over counterconditioning and desensitization work for body handling (specifically around “Ralphie’s” paws and nails for nail trims). Began creating a positive CER to the presentation of the nail clippers. Introduced scratch board training for front nails.
Great job to “Ralphie” and his mom!

“Finn” had an excellent training session with his parents and Shannon yesterday. They are doing a wonderful job practicing with the clicker, working on movement cues, and the foundation for leash manners. Yesterday’s lesson covered:
—Went over how to work on counterconditioning and desensitization to the sound of dogs barking.
—Practiced leash manners inside the house and then out in the backyard (he did fantastic)!
—Practiced introducing a positive interrupter cue.
—Practiced a recall exercise.
—Introduced a place behavior.

Great work to “Finn” and his parents! He’s such a fun and adorable doggo!

Meet “Frieda” (6 year female American Staffordshire Terrier mix), “Frankie” (5 year female French Bulldog), & “Greta” (12 year female Miniature Pinscher/Chihuahua mix). These three had their consultation appointment with their mom and Shannon yesterday. Because of their history, Shannon first met with their mom outside the home to avoid over-arousal with the 3 dogs having a novel person enter the home, while Shannon and their mom discussed their history/behavior concerns as well as various training and behavior topics. Today’s lesson covered:
—Started with Shannon meeting “Frankie”, who was very nervous to meet Shannon. Since “Frankie” was unable to work on one of her typically favorite lickable treats in Shannon’s presence, her mom returned her inside where she would be more comfortable, then Shannon discussed fear/anxiety behavior in dogs. Shannon recommended figuring out “Frankie”’s treat hierarchy and trying higher value food for next session with the hopes she can eat around Shannon to help with creating a positive CER (conditioned emotional response) to Shannon’s presence.
—Next was “Frieda”’s turn, who was able to work on a lickable treat immediately. “Frieda was able to practice some cues right away!
—Discussed environmental management strategies to help with undesirable behaviors.
—Discussed greeting protocols for when novel people visit.

A lot of topics were covered today for these 3 girlies. We look forward to working with them and their mom again soon!
