๐…๐ฎ๐ง ๐Ÿ๐š๐œ๐ญ: Rhaenyra has earned her rightful place as queen of the flock, being the first egg layer and all! Even though she rules the roost, she does not engage in flock arguments and chooses peace over battle.

Her eggs are on the smaller side now, but they'll get bigger as she gets older!

We have so many caterpillars on our milkweed plants, and even our first chrysalis! And lots of monarchs have been visiting the flowers and milkweed.

The first year we moved in my mom gave us a milkweed plant from her garden. Since then, more and more have popped up, and with that more and more butterflies have moved in each year to visit and lay eggs.

Who else has milkweed growing in their gardens? If you are interested in adding some, make sure you plant the native variety for your region. If you are here in MA, the native varieties include common milkweed, swamp milkweed, and butterfly milkweed.

๐Ÿ› using soil management practices to keep the soil healthy and alive
๐ŸŒป covercropping and interplanting (planting marigolds is one classic example!) to attract bugs to the cover instead of the good crops
๐Ÿ“ letting chickens eat them (or, if you happen to have a neighborhood peacock, he'll do the trick, too! ๐Ÿคฃ)

Check out "The Bumblebee Flies Anyway" by Kate Bradbury. In this memoir, Kate is working though some difficult times in her life and has just moved into a new apartment, where she transforms her backyard into a space that is welcoming to wildlife. Her story chronicles how her urban wildlife garden flourishes andโ€”over timeโ€”more and more wildlife comes to visit or create homes there.

This book has emotional examples of struggling wildlife species, but also gives ideas for how to help by creating space for them in our own gardens.

is releasing a sequel on June 6th, and I am excited to learn what else she has to teach us about wildlife conservation!

A shout-out to my own mom, Diane, who inspired my love of blooms.

As a child, my mother was a gardener. My favorite memories are of spring timeโ€”our house smelled of lilac with beautiful ombre arrangements always on the table. It wasnโ€™t until I was away from home that I began to truly appreciate them. When my parents came to visit me, my mother would always bring a bouquet of wildflowers from her garden. I remember the comfort those little bouquets brought me; I still get that same feeling of comfort when I hold a bouquet now.

My mom gave me lilac bushes from her property, and when they bloom this time of year, I think of her and smile. Thank you, Mom! ๐ŸŒธ

We loved hearing about Owen's journey to becoming a landscape designer and all the unconventional tips he shares about landscaping our yards to help regenerate the earth.
