HAPPY RESCUE FOSTER in Alexandria, Egypt is going an extraordinary job. They rescue stray dogs from the streets of Alexandria, rehabilitate them, and take care of them as long as it takes. Indeed, they do not put the dogs down, as we often do here in Quebec, even when they are injured, aggressive, old, and unlikely to be adopted. Ahmed Youssef and Mahmoud Abdel Maksoud, who founded the center, get no governmental help, and rely strictly on donations. I visited the shelter located in the countryside (a land donated by a good Samaritan) and found 250 dogs placed in spacious compartments depending on their needs. It is indeed a very hard job to take care of so many dogs and it certainly takes incredibly dedicated people to do it. Ahmed and Mahmoud with a few volunteers and a friendly veterinarian do it all. But the results are there: the dogs are happy and peaceful in the shelter and the streets of Alexandria are mostly free of stray dogs.
With the eruption of the war in Gaza it is evident where help is needed most but the dogs do not know that. They are living creatures and still need food, water, and shelter. I hope you find it in your heart and give some hope to Happy Rescue Foster.
