UPDATE FOR OCTOBER:

Unfortunately, none of the applications for our lovely, sweet Smores have been the right home for this girl. Unbelievable to me!!! She is wonderful with no problems whatsoever. A little shy at first but that is the proper sheltie temperament. Is fine with other dogs but, as I mentioned, does not run and play with them. She has so much love to give and is so smart and very food motivated to learn too. A fun, loving dog. We all thought she would be adopted quickly. Application can be found at www.michigansheltierescue.net

Bella is a two-year-old female who came from a kennel situation with another sheltie. Both extremely shy and scared. Her kennel mate, Minnie, was ready earlier than Bella and was adopted and doing very well in her new home. Bella's foster home is still working with Bella. She will need a home with another dog to continue to teach her how to be a fun-loving dog and that the world and people mean her no harm. At this time, she is still very shy but starting to trust her foster home. She will need someone who is knowledgeable of dog behavior, a lot of patience and willing to give her the time needed. She is a high flight risk!

Beckum is our 14-year-old boy who is a complete love. Full of life, runs in the yard, does steps like a trooper, everyone is his best friend immediately. Other than a grey muzzle, you would never guess his age. After repeated blood work, urinalysis and prescription food he continues to have protein in his urine indicating some kidney failure. After long discussions about the best for Beckum adjusting to a new home and a new owner who would fall in love with him, we decided to classify Beckum as one of our hospice dogs.

Chloe, a ten-year-old girl was adopted by her foster home. She fell in love with her while caring for her thru her medical needs until we were ready to list her.

Angel, a six-year-old girl was also adopted recently and is doing great in her new home.

At this time, we also have three other dogs in rescue. Probably not adoptable for different reasons. One of them, Robby, went thru so much abuse before he arrived here. He is now quite happy in HIS house and HIS yard but could never be taken out for a walk on a lead. Another one, Lily, we suspect was used as a bait dog for fighting rings. Am working with Lily but it will be a long, long time for her. The third one, Ollie, was obviously treated and disciplined very roughly. He will defend himself at a perceived threat. Much, much better than when he first came but not really adoptable despite a sweet nature. Besides, he barks a lot in the house! Not the yard. Most people would not tolerate it.

REMINDER: Our lovely, blue merle girl, Smores, is still available and patiently waiting for her permanent new home. She is 4 years old. A bit shy with strangers but warms up quickly with treats. LOVES her toys and tennis balls and playing in the water. She will bring her own swimming pool. Smores, however, is not fond of sharing so would be best as an only dog. Knows basic commands, likes her crate but would benefit from some additional classes and a bit more socialization outside the home. A fenced yard is required for Smores. An application can be found on our website at www.michigansheltierescue.net

UPDATES:
My sincere apologies to the followers of this page for not posting sooner. I had surgery and was also very busy with new intakes, medical appointments, etc.

As promised, I will begin with the update on our pretty blue merle girl, Smores. She is now ready for adoption but must go to a home as an only dog with a fenced yard. This is not a dog who likes to share. She is very active. A bit shy at first with strangers but will warm up. Smores is toy and especially tennis ball obsessed, well mannered, likes her crate, wants to please and certainly is food motivated. Likes water and has her own swimming pool that will go with her. She would benefit from some classes. Could be a good performance prospect for dance, rally, scent work. Her birthdate is 2-16-2020.

Another senior came to us when his former owner had a medical emergency. His name is Beckum, and birthdate is 11-01-2010. This is a lovely, well mannered, tri color male, who loves attention and will be your shadow around the house. Enjoys his short walks on lead too. Does not act his age. When we did his blood panel, it was discovered that he has protein in his urine. This will be checked again when he goes for his dental cleaning September 5th. We have started him on a prescription food for now while we await results in September. If he follows the lead of another senior, Emma, who we have here, he might need some medication for life. Emma is taking Telmisartin daily and has been doing well, with no symptoms, for two years.

In addition to the two above, we took in two young females, both just under two years old, from a kennel situation. They both need medical completed and additional socialization as they adjust to living inside a home. Minnie seems to be adjusting a bit better than her roommate, Bella. Bella originally came from an Amish breeder then to this kennel. As young as she is, she has already had one litter. So far, they have tested negative for heartworm, been wormed and the vet did an exam. They will be spayed and vaccinated in September. I will post when they are ready for adoption.

Angel, yet another rescue dog here, is waiting to meet her possible permanent home next week with a smooth collie to play with. She is a sable/white, 6+ year old, who is VERY overweight and on prescription diet food. She weighed 42 lbs. when she came and should weigh around 23 lbs.

Lily came to us a few months ago. Not much is known about her background for sure. Based on many things, we feel she might have possibly been used as a bait dog. We continue to work with Lily.

These are just the new additions. We have three others who may never be adoptable as they each need VERY specialized homes.

SAD DAY:

It is thru many tears and a heavy heart I have to announce that Dee Dee left for the Rainbow Bridge. For the last couple of days, she refused all food, drank only a bit of water, only stood long enough to urinate and had lost all interest in the world around her. The years of neglect had taken too large of a toll on her small, frail body. She was tired. I take some comfort in knowing her last couple of weeks she was clean, out of pain, felt loving, caring hands and received many, many prayers. I held her in my lap, close to my chest and heart in my living room when the vet came here where she was comfortable. Anyone reading this probably knows the hurt and loss. Yes, I only knew her for two weeks but could not have loved her more if I had her for years. The only thing missing are the memories that might have been from her early years. I'm so, so sorry I couldn't do more for my little Dee Dee.

UPDATE ON DEE DEE:

I brought Dee Dee home from her surgery last Friday. She was not doing well over the weekend and had my hands full caring for her. She ate some shredded chicken, drank a bit of water but her cough was getting worse, I took her back to the vet this morning to recheck her kidney values and get a chest x-ray. She has less than10% of kidney function, but it is holding steady. She does have pneumonia, so we started her on yet another medication. Dee Dee is more alert compared to when she first came to rescue. I do see improvement in her condition. She did not get in this condition in a short period of time so it will take a while to bring her back. She loves to be held on my lap and actually shows an interest in the yard. Granted, she doesn't go far from me, but it is a start.

Thank you to all for your prayers. I firmly believe they are helping this little doll. She only weighs 12.5 lbs.

Today we are asking for prayers for one of our newest intakes. A sad story but there is hope. She came from a shelter as an unclaimed stray. Unknown how long she had wandered in the high heat. Very dehydrated. When she arrived at my home her undercoat was tightly matted to her skin all over her body, nails were curled under her paws, her entire mouth and teeth were covered in tartar (the worst I have seen in 40 years!), nose was scaling off and dripping, coughing, was not eating but drank water. She is old and deaf. Possibly some vision loss.

It was a weekend, which I spent trying to save her coat rather than shaving her. Medication on the top of her nose. Her nails were trimmed. I named her Dee Dee. Finally on Sunday, she ate/lapped some shredded chicken. She was taken to a vet for a blood panel and exam. The vet kept her overnight for a possible emergency surgery on her mouth. Blood work came back the following day and showed she was in kidney failure. A decision had to be made that morning. She could not live with the condition of her mouth. Do we chance surgery on this old girl, despite the blood results, to try to give her a couple of decent weeks or months or euthanize? I opted to spend the money from the rescue account to try for a chance that she might be out of pain, clean, comfortable in her fluffy dog bed, feel love and care for whatever time she might have left if she survived the surgery.

During the surgery it was discovered the bacteria had made a hole in the top of her mouth into the nasal area. She survived surgery and is still at the vet office receiving fluids to flush the anesthetic from the kidneys and pain medication. All teeth were removed except the four K9's. I visited her today and she ate the shredded, wet chicken I brought for her. They will offer more tonight. Vet will check her kidney values again tomorrow. We are fighting so hard to bring her back here for more aftercare.

The decisions we make in rescue are not always "cut and dried" or even the most practical. Each dog is an individual case. Yes, I can be rightly criticized for spending this much on a very old dog who, in all probability, won't live very long but isn't this what rescue is all about? She was only at my home for three days. I saw a sweet, gentle, old lady who wanted any attention she could get. She deserved some love and care which she obviously had not received in many years. Isn't that what we all hope for at the end?

Please send good thoughts for little Dee Dee.

UPDATE:
Sarge left for his new home this afternoon June 29th. "On to new adventures, Sarge. I know you will fill a space for him that has been empty since his last sheltie died." Sarge warmed up to him quickly and was excited to leap into his vehicle when they left.

We can finally announce our newest arrival, Sarge, is available for adoption. He has completed all medical including a complete blood panel, thyroid test, urinalysis, dental cleaning and removal of a benign growth on his rear leg. Sarge is a sweet, sable and white, 11-year-old gentleman, whose owner could no longer care for him due to her own medical issues. He does well with other dogs, likes his walks on a lead, is gentle and affectionate with people but likes his food and treats a bit too much. Sarge is a few pounds over his ideal weight by about 4/5 lbs. This is a nearly perfect dog waiting for a quiet household who may want a walking companion and friend. and willing to give him a retirement home for his last years. An application can be found on our website www.michigansheltierescue.net

Sarge has been adopted. See the updated post above.

Michigan Sheltie Rescue

Michigan Sheltie Rescue is a non profit, volunteer organization that helps homeless or abandoned Shelties. Each sheltie is treated for any medical problems and then spayed or neutered, brought current on all shots, wormed, treated for fleas and ticks, heartworm tested and started on preventative medication, started on flea prevention medicine, and groomed. All shelties are then screened and adopted into safe, loving homes.
