Our latest addition to Graylady's Boston's, Asha, recently completed three essential health screenings. Boston Terriers must undergo testing for Congenital Deafness, a comprehensive eye examination performed by an ACVO (American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists®) certified veterinarian, and an evaluation for Patellar Luxation (dislocated kneecap).

The results of these screenings are submitted to The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and recorded in the OFA-CHIC database, where they become publicly accessible. This information enables breeders to make informed decisions about their breeding programs and allows potential buyers to assess breeders' commitment to health testing.

Once the test results are submitted and verified by the OFA, the dog receives CHIC certification, and the results become available in the public database.

I want to thank the University Veterinary Hospital in Beit Degan for their exceptional care of Asha. Special thanks to Dr. Itai Srugo and his staff in the Neurology Department for conducting Asha's congenital deafness screening (BAER), to Dr. Lionel Sebbag of the Ophthalmology Department for performing Asha's eye examination and providing detailed explanations of his findings, and to Dr. Doron Tzur for evaluating Asha's patellar health. Dr. Tzur has been with us since the beginning, and I am proud to consider him our family veterinarian.

Kennel Blindness

Kennel blindness is like one of those freshman 101 classes which everyone grumbles about because it has no relevance. After a few years everyone realizes that this was the most important class they had taken.

Over the years much has been written about this phenomenon. I made an attempt to explain how it affected me in the above post. I found the writings of Claudia Waller Orlandi, Ph.D. to be enlightening. Dr Orlandi was tapped to contribute to the AKC Courses for breeders. d I found her take on the subject to be very concise and non-judgmental. I was fortunate to be a relative new comer to the breeding world . It was easy to take stock and hit the reset button without losing years of work. It is important having mentors who are honest. Asking “stupid” questions can also be effective remedies to overcome kennel blindness
