We are off today with 5 ferals who will receive the gift of spay/neuter and vaccinations allowing them and their community members to have better lives! Diane and Lorie are doing the transport to Just Animals! Despite days of trapping efforts, the other feral felines were not cooperating 😺 and we are happy to be able to help these 5 today. Special thanks to all the community members and Safe House team for their trapping efforts! It truly is like herding cats!

We ended our rotation with PetSmart Peru, Illinois yesterday, and 6 of our sweet rescues found their way into loving, wonderful homes! As always, we enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with the amazing Pet Smart team and are thankful for the assistance of volunteers Tammy and Fro who went each afternoon to spend time with our babies, and for volunteer Trisha Marie Loger who worked so hard with both the set up and clean up of the rotation!
As for Razzle here, well, he definitely turned on the charm yet didn't find his home; along with Lolli and Shasta. That's O.K.! They are back safe with us and can be adopted, along with our other rescues, through www.safehousepets.org

Bean is a wonderful example of what good care and treatment can bring. Bean and his 3 siblings were found in a barn in poor condition. The picture on the left is Bean after 3 days of great treatment. Even after a vet visit and starting of treatment, Bean was just 1.06 lbs. and struggling; as were the siblings.
Bean and his siblings required a significant amount of care which, when an intake is accepted, that commitment is required. That's right! Rescues are required by law to provide necessary care, treatment, medicines, veterinary care for their intakes!
They had already been dewormed and flea treated prior to our intake. After intake, for over a week, their eyes were cleaned every 2 hours and eye ointment applied, sub q fluids, antibiotics two times a day (those will be done end of day tomorrow!) nutrients 3 times a day, they were on heating stones, prescription food made into a gruel 4 times a day with some syringe feeding and we continually watched over them. Today, 13 days into rescue, all are doing well, have almost tripled their weight, are playing and being healthy kittens! We are so happy for the Bean family! Soon they will be ready for vetting and adoption!

We are absolutely devastated. Despite 1 hour syringe feeding, injectable antibiotics, injectable cerenia, sub q fluids, and a will to live, we just lost Pitters!
We see a lot in rescue and this is one of the worst situations seen. A whole family of cats gone, deceased, in less than a month!
Panleukopenia is a deadly virus. It's incubation period is typically 2 to 7 days after becoming infected. The virus lives on surfaces for up to 1 year. To have a chance of survival, immediate and aggressive intervention and treatment is necessary when symptoms develop. Unfortunately, the Pitters family did not receive that, and we could not fix what had been severely broken. Please pray and send strength for the family that worked so hard to save her life; they have never been through this before and their sobbing is as painful as the loss to us.

When we were contacted by a community member on Sunday requesting assistance with 3 kittens, believe me, we wanted to run right over and get those kittens! Yet, we controlled our emotions and assessed the situation to develop a plan to help the kittens while protecting the rescues already in our shelter and our ability to complete future intakes.
It was clear that these kittens were very ill. It was reported that mom and 3 other siblings had passed away within the last week while in house at another local organization and outside the possession of the caring community member. These kittens had been released on Sunday in this condition.
The kitten appearing most ill had already made it's way over to Nancy tri county humane society PRINCETON illinois before we became fully involved. With no immediate vet services available, we knew he was in the best care he could be and could be seen by a vet first thing Monday morning. We did bring antibiotics to start and administered sub q fluids. Unfortunately, he passed away at 2 am Monday morning surrounded by Nancy's love and not alone.
While we committed to the remaining two kittens becoming Safe House intakes, because of the circumstances, the responsible choice was to leave the kittens in the care of the community member. The other 2 kittens were in more stable condition, eating by syringe and we provided instructions, antibiotics, nutrients, and support to the caring family through the night. The 2 kittens were scheduled for vet examination on Monday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the black kitten, Yzma, began to deteriorate and he was rushed in on an emergency basis. Testing revealed panleukopenia and pneumonia. This didn't occur overnight and when we were told there was no hope, we provided humane euthanasia as a responsible rescue should do.
We are so grateful that Pitters is still alive this morning! She looks just like her mama! At about 8.6 ounces, 4 weeks old, and infected with a progressed deadly virus, she is fighting for her life yet we are hopeful! The family is providing 24/7 care with our oversight and direction. We made the right decision for this situation!
Please send your love, thoughts, prayers, well wishes, whatever it is to Pitters and this wonderful family. Panleukopenia is a tricky, scary virus and they are doing all that can be done and what we would be doing. It is a horrible situation all around, and one that was preventable!

Mira’s story was rough in the beginning yet it led to paradise! She's the little baby that was found in the road after being struck by a car. From the lady that stopped to help her to the lady who contacted us and got her to Ancare Veterinary Hospital, she is a very fortunate girl!
Her time at Ancare led her to the skilled care of Dr. Champagne who removed the fractured leg and took her to her home to care for her while she was healing. Through that process this sweet vet tech fell in love with her and she is now in her forever home with her new mom and dad!
Mira is now Myrtle and she will have all she needs FOREVER. She's got herself a canine and feline sibling too.
We are so grateful to all of those who helped Mira survive including our supporters who assisted with the costs of her necessary surgery and treatment! Congratulations Mrytle, we are so happy for you!

Rescue can bring dark times despite all efforts made. It’s so important to remember the good things amongst the darkness.
Today we celebrate the lives of these 4 innocent babies. Found in a barn with no mom around, they were near death and saved, once again, by Nancy tri county humane society PRINCETON illinois. She took them in, got them to the vet and saved 4 of the 5! Ranging from .56 lbs. to 1.06 lbs and suffering from severe URI and malnutrition, they were in trouble in many ways!
We have had them at Safe House since last Friday and, today, do believe they will overcome their illnesses and be able to survive! Last night they were playing! 😻 They, of course, are not ready for adoption yet!
They are a reflection of the consequences of feline overpopulation and, unfortunately, what many of these babies go through. Spay/neuter!
Welcome babies! We promise you a better life than what was originally given to you! Thank you Nancy for their jump start!
