When we were contacted by a community member on Sunday requesting assistance with 3 kittens, believe me, we wanted to run right over and get those kittens! Yet, we controlled our emotions and assessed the situation to develop a plan to help the kittens while protecting the rescues already in our shelter and our ability to complete future intakes.
It was clear that these kittens were very ill. It was reported that mom and 3 other siblings had passed away within the last week while in house at another local organization and outside the possession of the caring community member. These kittens had been released on Sunday in this condition.
The kitten appearing most ill had already made it's way over to Nancy tri county humane society PRINCETON illinois before we became fully involved. With no immediate vet services available, we knew he was in the best care he could be and could be seen by a vet first thing Monday morning. We did bring antibiotics to start and administered sub q fluids. Unfortunately, he passed away at 2 am Monday morning surrounded by Nancy's love and not alone.
While we committed to the remaining two kittens becoming Safe House intakes, because of the circumstances, the responsible choice was to leave the kittens in the care of the community member. The other 2 kittens were in more stable condition, eating by syringe and we provided instructions, antibiotics, nutrients, and support to the caring family through the night. The 2 kittens were scheduled for vet examination on Monday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the black kitten, Yzma, began to deteriorate and he was rushed in on an emergency basis. Testing revealed panleukopenia and pneumonia. This didn't occur overnight and when we were told there was no hope, we provided humane euthanasia as a responsible rescue should do.
We are so grateful that Pitters is still alive this morning! She looks just like her mama! At about 8.6 ounces, 4 weeks old, and infected with a progressed deadly virus, she is fighting for her life yet we are hopeful! The family is providing 24/7 care with our oversight and direction. We made the right decision for this situation!
Please send your love, thoughts, prayers, well wishes, whatever it is to Pitters and this wonderful family. Panleukopenia is a tricky, scary virus and they are doing all that can be done and what we would be doing. It is a horrible situation all around, and one that was preventable!
