Beautiful Crackers (we call her Betsy) has been in foster for nearly 3 weeks- (and in kennels for a month before that) and she’s not had one application.

She is the most beautiful little dog who needs a special person/s to show her the love and care she’s spent so many years missing out on.

Puppies are extremely cute but do require more care and attention than older dogs. They require someone that is home a lot of the time and someone willing to help them with training. This care and encouragement will help them grow into happy, well balanced adult dogs. 🥰🐾

Little Whistle is currently residing in foster in maidenhead!! Shes a very sweet girl who is still fairly nervous of being handled but loves to come for a walk and certainly loves treat time , she loves other dogs and loves to play ! She sleeps well in our kitchen at night ! This sweet girl is desperate to find her forever home with someone who can give her time and patience to settle in so she can truly flourish !! She will need another dog or dogs in her new home to help her gain her confidence and teach her the ropes !!!

A huge thank you to Coláiste Bhaile Chláir (Claregalway College) who held a hot chocolate fundraiser and a non-uniform day and raised an amazing €1,646 for all the dogs at MADRA!🌟🌟🌟

We're under huge pressure with the amount of dogs needing our help and donations like this are really needed and really appreciated. But as well as the financial help, our team get such a boost knowing that there are so many good people out there rooting for us and helping us to continue doing what we do. 🐾

D' Beez Kneez arrived into our care as a somewhat confused and bedraggled stray off the bogs of Ballinasloe but with his sunny,positive nature it wasnt long before he was gslloping around our fields with that big hairy grin on his face that we all grew to love as we got to know him.

A couple of weeks ago his prayers were answered when The O Malley/Burke family sent in an application and we just thought they sounded the perfect match for our loveable,goofy boy .

We hear D' BKneez (now renamed Alfie) has settled in well and is starting to enjoy the finer things in life ..like shoes,toys and anything thats not nailed to the floor whilst still bringjng much joy and love into the home ...❤️

Huge thanks to Siobhan and her lovely family for opening up their hearts and homes to one of our dogs in need..

April is “Adopt a Greyhound” month and we will be posting a lot about this wonderful breed over the coming weeks. And as today is April Fool’s Day, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to burst a famous myth about Greyhounds!🐾

Usually the biggest misconception about Greyhounds is that “they need lots of exercise”. This is absolutely NOT TRUE! They may be able to run very fast, being the fastest dogs in the world, but they actually don’t have a huge amount of stamina and are known for being one of the laziest dogs ever! So just like any other dog, Greyhounds enjoy a couple of short walks a day, and the rest of the time they’re mostly inclined to be snoozing on the sofa. 😴❤️

They’re not called 40mph couch potatoes for nothing! 🤣🧡

Poor Otis arrived to us in a terrible state, as he had untreated mange that had caused sores all over his body. Thankfully he has started his recovery, and is feeling a lot better now and will be looking for a new home soon. Otis is still only a youngster (about 1 year old) and is a small to medium lad, that will fit nicely on the couch in between the rest of the family.🥰🏡🐾

Hayley has been enjoying some snuggles today with her favourite canine carer!🥰💕🐾

Hayley is recent arrival to our kennels, so she is still undergoing assessment. She seems a happy, friendly girl now that she has settled in although she seemed absolutely petrified when we first met her. She has had a tough time of it, and certainly needs a little TLC, but she will surely make a great pet for the right person. Hayley is like a miniature Kerry Blue Terrier, and is possibly about 4 years old.

We all know how amazing Sighthounds are as companions & how stunningly regal they are whilst also being goofballs at times! They are the PERFECT dog and we have some who are looking for their new home (complete with a comfy sofa to snooze the days away on). 🥰💤

They require very little exercise and are gentle dogs who are often extremely chilled yet somehow are constantly overlooked when people look to adopt.🥺

If you ask any Greyhound/Sighthound guardian they'll tell you how amazing they are! Once you adopt a Sighthound, you'll wonder how you ever managed without one! We'll warn you though-they are quite the addiction & you'll suddenly find yourself admiring other Sighthounds when out & about & researching which fleecey coat or martingale collar to buy next!🤣

It's a heartwarming tale of a wobbly little Staffie pup who finds himself all alone & his journey to finding his new home. It's a great way to introduce the concept of rescue to young kids & also shows that it's ok to be different. Hopefully books such as this may influence the next generation of animal rescuers or may encourage people to consider adopting a dog as we really need things to change here for animals!🐾💙

The book will help raise funds for both us here at MADRA & also the fantastic GSPCA (Parky's rescuers) who do amazing work. 💙🐾

If you have the means and the time, adopting a rescue dog is one of the best thing you can do in life (in our opinion!).

They will change your life as much as you theirs.😊

Think carefully before bringing a dog into your life, consider the financial costs of having a dog as well as the responsibility and time commitment required. Don't choose a dog based on their looks. Think about their breed and what they were bred for and how you can give them outlets for this. Get involved in dog sports like agility, hoopers, mantrailing, tracking and trick training. See what makes them tick. It's a wonderful way to bond with your dog.

Do some research on fear free, reward based training to understand up-to-date information on dog training and behaviour. Thing have changed a lot in recent years and we no longer rely on outdated dominance theories. Your dog is not trying to be the "boss". They want to feel safe and for you to be kind and predictable.Get advice from an accredited positive reinforcement trainer before you bring a dog home.

Speak to our Rehoming Co-ordinator about your lifestyle and they can advise you what kind of dog will be best suited for you. Be open minded and be honest. Don't compare a new dog with a previous dog. Every dog is an individual, regardless of their breed. Be aware that the more requirements you have, there may be a wait to find that perfect match.

Puppies are absolutely incredible but they're also a lot of work and baby sharks for the early months! They're not "bold" or "stubborn" or toileting indoors out of "spite". It is your job to learn what their needs are and to ensure you meet them in a kind and compassionate way. Ensure they have daily enrichment and focus on the rewarding their behaviour that you like. Do this a lot!

Don't dismiss the dogs who are older, or the ones who are less flashy or those with health issues or behaviour quirks. They are the ones who are so often overlooked. Kennel life is not a home. These dogs also need

Our beautiful Rottie x GSD girl Rinky is still looking for a home. 🥰🩷

She's a fantastic girl who has grown up in a home with children. She's loving & loyal & her owners are heartbroken at having to rehome her but due to a change in circumstances she's looking for her new home.💔

She's a fantastic companion & is an absolute cuddle bug! We feel she'd be best suited to a home in a rural setting as that's what she's used to. She'll need a secure garden to ensure she doesn't take herself off on little adventures! 🐾

Message from Dogs Disclosed 👏

DO DOGS RECOGNISE & PREFER SIMILAR BREEDS?
If you have ever taken your dog out to where there are other dogs, you may have noticed that some dogs are more attracted to particular breeds.

Why is this? Although there is no formal research that concludes that dogs are more attracted to certain breeds and not others, I believe there is a plausible explanation for this.

Individual breeds have unique face and body shapes, use different styles of body language and have different ways of playing which a similar breed recognises and relates to. They simply understand the finer details of each other’s language.

The communication style makes perfect sense to them, but may not be as well understood by other breed types.

A negative or positive past experience with a particular breed may also have an impact on a dog’s perception and reaction to that breed.

When I take my Schnauzers out, they get very excited if they see other Schnauzers and immediately want to go over to say hello. They do the same with Airedale Terriers, Scotties and Maltese, but tend not to be interested or keep away from other breeds.

💙 Can you be a Heartbeat Hero? 💙

Like most rescues across the country, MADRA are totally reliant on our supporters to keep us alive; when you stop supporting us, we have to stop our work. Thankfully, you have never let us down, whenever we ask, you guys always step up, and for that we are eternally grateful. We work really hard to keep all our bills paid on time, so that we only have occasional emergency appeals, when we get blindsided by a particularly difficult (and expensive) case. But now we have another appeal, and while this is not an emergency appeal, it is an appeal for sustainability, so that we can continue to keep our doors open, and keep doing the work that you guys want us to do (and that we are good at) - saving dogs in the pounds.

Now more than ever we need you, our supporters. You are the heartbeat heroes of MADRA. Your support through thick and thin has sustained us, inspired us, motivated us to keep going, every day for the dogs. Times are very hard at the moment, and dogs lives are at risk. Many of you will have seen rescues across the country having to close their doors to intake (temporarily we hope), and we at MADRA are trying so hard to maintain our services to the dogs in three different pounds across Galway and Mayo, even though our kennel facility is at capacity. This means that we are currently paying external boarding kennels to hold some of these dogs, while we work flat out trying to find them new homes. We are particularly vulnerable right now after the closure of our shop in Furbo due to redevelopment of the landlord's land. This has been a major source of income for us that is no longer available.

Collecting the dogs from the pounds is only the start of a sometimes long, and always expensive journey. We cannot take dogs out, unless we know that we can look after them for as long as it takes to find their new home.

And that is why we are asking if you can spare even just €5 a month, for the next six to twelve months, through
