Pod-Antics!
Podencos, the most cheeky, mischievous, gentle, loyal souls you will ever meet! Full of a zest for life that astounds me after the life they have had to endure in Spain..... to say I love the breed is an understatement! I first began fostering podencos for Spanish registered charity SOS Podenco Rescue, in May 2014, at my home in Scotland. My previous experience was with greyhounds, and prior to that a golden retriever, and a rough collie.
I had my greyhounds from 2008, Beth came first, but had terrible separation anxiety, and the only thing that helped was having another dog around, so Jack moved in 6 months later! Jack passed away 2017, and Beth in 2018. They saw many foster podencos and other dogs come and go, and they were very tolerant and friendly with them all.
My first foster was Buster, a podenco campanero. He had neurological issues due to having survived distemper, but was an affectionate, laid-back boy, and went to a fantastic home in the South of England where he lives happily to this day. I have since fostered over 20 podencos and a couple of other breeds, and loved every minute of it. I have had up to 6 dogs in my home at once. I have experience of the scared ones, and various issues like food dominance, resource guarding and separation anxiety. I have had big, strong, bouncy pods, and tiny, timid podenco andaluz, and everything in between. If you want to read any of their stories please visit my fostering page ‘Pod-Antics’. Around June 2016 I volunteered to help the rescue with their UK adoptions, and have been doing that ever since, and I also help with fundraising.
I have seen posted many times ‘Pod owners, who do you trust to look after your dogs when you go on holiday?’ Personally, the only person I would trust with a podenco is someone who has knowledge and experience of the breed. And where is the safest place for them to be? At home! Where they can just continue with their own routine, in familiar surroundings, with the least possible disruption to their lives. This especially applies to the nervous or scared ones; putting them into kennels may remind them of a terrible experience they have had, and moving them into another home may cause them a lot of stress. I decided to set up a service for all dogs, not just podencos and sighthounds, to offer another solution that will be better for their well-being, and give peace of mind to you, their families, allowing you to go away on holiday without worrying.
