We are saddened to announce the passing of the latest clutch of Axolotl babies- while we can’t say for certain why this loss occurred there are a few factors that may lead to the loss of an entire clutch of newly hatched babies including :

Genetic Disorders: Some genetic disorders or mutations may result in developmental abnormalities, organ malformations, or weakened immune systems, making the babies more susceptible to diseases or failure to thrive.

Recessive Traits: Recessive genetic traits that are detrimental to survival, such as certain color morphs associated with health problems, can lead to higher mortality rates in offspring.

Two Twin or not Two Twin!!

In the context of axolotls, if two embryos develop within the same egg membrane or sac, they wouldn't be considered twins in the traditional sense. Twins usually refer to siblings that develop from separate eggs within the same pregnancy. However, in the case of axolotls sharing a single sac, they could be considered as developing together in a unique situation. Each embryo would still have its own genetic material and would develop independently within the shared environment until hatching. 💡
