reHealth reHeart reHome
March through June is known as Puppy and Kitten Season among vets and animal workers due to a constant flood of unwanted litters. Spring 2010. A neurotic dog on death row had 72 hours to find a home. She’d been sent back from the few local rescues that had room becuase she was extremely high maintenance. Hooked on crack co***ne, the little black lab needed rehab and a patient soul. I couldn’t allow her to be euthanized due to the mistakes of criminally neglectful humans.
I learned a lot in the next two weeks. The most important lesson being never allow yourself to be grasped by the evil talons of addiction.
I had the worst case possible as my initiation into rescuing- a drug addicted dog with sharp canines is no laughing matter. But through the trials and tribulations of that first rescue a passion was formed. I opened my home and heart to all creatures. We’ve had a mutant hamster who needed her teeth clipped every three days. A bat-like hairless kitten we affectioanlly named Ozzy who stopped growing at 4 inches. A bearded dragon with depression. A snake who’s hero is Houdini. And many, many more.
At the time of this post I have rescued over 250 pets.
