Loose Lead Obedience was the name used by my mentor, retired Staff Sergeant Mike Adams, the first canine handler with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. Although he has probably taught every imaginable breed over the years, Mike was well known and widely accepted as the German Shepherd’s best friend. Which is how I met him. When I had a pup who needed to be conditioned around other dogs, I joined Mike’s group class. Like so many others, within a couple of weeks I was hooked. Mike helped train me through my first, second and third CKC title and for a few months Reya was the only GSD in the province to hold a CD title.
The next year I started assisting in Mike’s basic and advanced classes, and learned how to teach in a group setting. When Mike decided to cut back from training, he offered me the opportunity to take over his group classes, and Loose Lead became Loose Leash. But it will always be Mike’s class. 😊
