• Secundaire arbeidsvoorwaarden bespreekbaar, zoals PADI open water course, kitesurfles of windsurf cursus!

Ayo!

This picture was taken by a friend of mine and Travelling Animal Doctors, Dr Jim Bader whilst on a photo safari in Tanzania on the Serengeti during February 2024.

Through Dr Bader and his contacts, Travelling Animal Doctors has been invited and agreed to conduct a Campaign for the Serengeti Ecosystem during the Fall of 2024.

Unfortunately, my (Terry Stone's) January birthday fundraiser did not do well this year (after jumping through PayPal's Policy hoops because PayPal claims (after October 2023) they no longer send funds to countries outside of the US (and its territories), Canada, UK & Australia. At the same time, PayPal claims they sent one of the contributions from one of my donors to the Netherlands🙃. To add to this debacle, FaceBook now only allows fundraising through PayPal.

The Tanzania Campaign will spay, neuter, vaccinate dogs (and cats) that are running rampant in the villages around the Serengeti (all total, approximately 100,000 dogs); as well as vaccinate some of the carnivores under the guidance of Park rangers. (Indigenous carnivores on the Serengeti, as well as throughout Africa, are susceptible to canine diseases; rabies, distemper, etc.)

The Serengeti is home to a multitude of animals, including:
1.5 million blue wildebeest; largest lion population in Africa; more than 250,000 zebras;
150,000 gazelles; 500 bird species; elephants; cheetahs and many, many more. As mentioned, carnivores are subject to contracting rabies and distemper (which can also infect humans).

Rabies is a preventable viral disease that is usually transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. Symptoms include fever, headache, excess salivation, muscle spasms, paralysis, and mental confusion. Once symptoms appear, it's nearly always fatal.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the TAD Tanzania Campaign can donate through the website below or message me (Terry Stone) through FB Messenger and I will provide alternate methods to contribute to the Campaign. or use the following link:

This story occured in 2013... it is truly an inspiring story prior to the birth of Travelling Animal Doctors, when the founding doctors of Travelling Animal Doctors (Drs Jochem Lastdrager and Drs Tjarda RB) were working as volunteers on the Galapagos Islands for another non-profit animal organization, Darwin Animal Doctors.

Please take some time to read this inspiring story of ingenuity, resilience and dedication to their craft by its volunteers in the early days of Travelling Animal Doctors.

This story was written for the "Dodo", by a former volunteer of Travelling Animal Doctors, Elizabeth Claire Alberts, PhD.

Woman Spots Brown Lump In Pond —
Then Realizes It's Drowning
By Maeve Dunigan Published on 12/7/2023 at 1:55p
When a woman walking near Coombs Pond in Australia recently noticed a strange brown lump floating aimlessly in the muck, the concerned passerby knew she had to get a better look. On closer inspection,. the woman realized the ball of fur was actually a wombat https://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/3168808/1584x1708/scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg
This was quite a surprise. According to Woofpurnay Veterinary Hospital, wombats don’t like water, and though they can swim, they usually only do so for very short amounts of time.
The woman called for her mom, who quickly arrived with a kayak. Using the boat’s paddle, the passerby’s mom carefully guided the exhausted wombat back to shore.
With the animal safe on land, the women called experts at Wombat Rescue for help.
“A very unusual rescue happened today,” Yolandi Vermaak, president and founder of Wombat Rescue, wrote in a Facebook post about the rescue. “And if not for the intervention of the public, this wombat would have drowned.”
Wombat Rescue volunteers found the waterlogged wombat lying under a bush covered in grass & twigs. The rescuers gently moved the wombat into a crate, transported him to the rescue for further examination
Safe at the rescue, the wombat began his slow recovery. “The first few days [were] hard, as he was very ill, very tired, and just slept,” Vermaak said. “He didn't eat or drink anything, but that was to be expected. He was transferred to one of our carers a few days later, [where] he had a bigger, but still small, enclosure where we could let him walk around a little, but not too much, so we [didn’t] overexert his lungs. He adapted here really well. He has mental stimulation, things to play with, like a hanging tire — and he loves that tire.” https://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/3168807/1584x1960/scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg
Though this wombat isn’t out of the woods quite yet, rescuers are hopeful that he’ll make his way back to the wild sometime soon. “His prospects are looking good,” Vermaak said. “Once we are fully satisfied that he is in the clear, we will release him near where he was found.”

Rescued Chimpanzee In Awe When She Sees Sky For The First Time

I saw this on the news earlier this week... This story is both heart wrenching and uplifting:

Meet Vanilla the chimpanzee. She’s 29 years old but, until very recently, she’d had never seen the open sky. Vanilla spent her early years in a biomedical research laboratory in New York where chimpanzees were kept in small (5′x5′x7′) cages suspended from the ground “like bird cages,” according to Save the Chimps, a sanctuary that cares for chimpanzees rescued from research laboratories, the pet trade and the entertainment industry.

When the research laboratory was closed in the 1990s, Vanilla was sent across the country to Wildlife Waystation in California, an animal sanctuary specializing in the care and rehabilitation of wild and exotic animals. But that wasn’t the end of Vanilla’s journey: Wildlife Waystation closed suddenly in 2019, forcing Vanilla and the other 41 chimps housed there to be rehomed.

Vanilla was sent across the country once more, this time to Save the Chimps in Florida. There, she was integrated into a large family of chimpanzees with whom she ventured out to see the open sky for the first time. According to Save the Chimps, all of Vanilla’s former dwellings had cage tops.

Save the Chimps decided to take her in, along with her family, and the animals made the cross-country trip to their new, forever home in Florida.

Video shared by animal sanctuary Save the Chimps shows Vanilla take her first steps outside, immediately hugging the alpha named Dwight as she smiles in awe.

Save the Chimps said following a quarantine period, Vanilla and her family were introduced to one of the larger family groups at the sanctuary. They are now fully integrated into the group and have a three-acre island to explore, along with “the freedom to choose where and how to spend” their days.

Vanilla was spellbound after seeing the sky for the first time in three decades last year, is reportedly flourishing at her new home in Florida.

“She was just welcomed so warmly,” said Dan Mathews, director of events and special projects at the Save the Chimps sanctuary in Fort Pierce where she resides, per the Daily Mail.

“And after all she’s been through, with never being able to walk more than 10 paces in any direction, to have this kind of freedom, she’s just, she’s thriving right now.”

Vanilla is one of 226 chimpanzees living on the idyllic island, dubbed “Florida’s wildest retirement community,” which houses primate refugees from laboratories, the entertainment industry, the exotic pet trade and roadside zoos.

Many have previously endured solitary confinement and never interacted with other chimps before — as was the case with Vanilla. She is a 29-year-old survivor of the notorious, now-closed Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates in Tuxedo, New York.

According to Mathews, she had “never felt grass beneath her feet before.”

Thankfully, Vanilla is now thriving in her new world, often seen frolicking around in the fields with other chimps — and periodically glancing up in disbelief.

Following is a Video of Vanilla seeing the sky for the first time:

Deaf Dog Only Feels Safe When She’s With Her Travel Pillow

Nali was listed for free on Craigslist, but when a family took her in and realized she was deaf, they decided they didn’t want her. They kept her outside without any toys before surrendering her to a shelter. That’s how Dharma Lorenz found her and became her new mom.

The moment Dharma saw her, she knew that she needed to take her. Lorenz initial intention was to just foster Nali and find a home for her. She was SO scared and sad in the shelter but still wagged her tail and was brave enough to come to Lorenz. As Nali settled into her new home, she looked to Lorenz dog, Amba, for guidance. Nali seemed so scared of doing something wrong and losing her new home, but Amba helped show her that she was safe now. Though sometimes Nali needed a little extra reassurance and that’s when she discovered Lorenz’ travel pillow.

Dharma had just come home from a two-week trip and her travel pillow was on top of her suitcase. When Lorenz wasn't paying attention, Nali carried it to the couch and was laying with her head on it. From that time on, Nali began to carry it everywhere she went; she slept with it; she laid it next to her bowl while she ate; if she misplaced it somewhere, she'd look everywhere, whining until she found it. The pillow obviously gave her comfort and help alleviate her fears.

It was as if the travel pillow represented Nali’s new mom coming home to her after being gone for a little while. It represented the fact that she’d never have to worry about being abandoned ever again. As a result, the travel pillow quickly became her very best friend. Nali took the travel pillow everywhere with her; it came with her on every walk and even went with her to the vet for extra comfort. The pillow was her constant companion; until she found someone who needed it more than her.

When Lorenz saw a dog named Satchi at the shelter, she had a similar reaction to when she met Nali. Satchi was also deaf and terrified, and Dharma knew Satchi needed her just as much as Nali had. Satchi was so traumatized when he arrived at the shelter, he wouldn't come out of his cubby. Satchi looked so confused and scared it broke Dharma’s heart. Lorenz began to take him out into the yard and teach him some hand signals. Satchi was and is extremely eager to please.! He was in the shelter for 7 to 8 months with no interest whatsoever; he would usually stay in his cubby just watching people walk by alone day after day. Very few people would stop or even asked to see him. Without warning, Satchi was given 24 hours before he was to be euthanized. Dharma adopted him that day.

When Satchi arrived in his new home, he looked to Nali the same way Nali had looked to Amba. She immediately became his best friend, and she helped to alleviate a lot of the same fears Nali had when she was first adopted. Slowly but surely, Nali helped Satchi make progress… then she gave him the ultimate gift!

Nali had the pillow one day; she grabbed it as if to play tug of war, but suddenly, she just let go of it, which was interesting because they usually, if not always, play tug with everything. Once Satchi had the pillow, Nali seemed to be completely OK with him keeping it. It was as if ‘Pillow’ had done its work for Nali; Nali instinctively knew that Satchi needed ‘Pillow’.
Now, Satchi sleeps with the travel pillow and takes it with him in the car when he’s feeling scared. Nali passed it on to him, hoping that it will help him as much as it helped her, and maybe someday he’ll pass it on to another dog in need.

You can follow Nali and Satchi on Instagram.

Adventurous Pig Is So Pleased With Himself For Getting Arrested By Police
More often than not, to wind up in the back of a police patrol car is a pretty decent sign that something didn’t go as planned. After all, getting arrested is hardly anybody’s idea of a good time.
Unless, perhaps, your name is Elvis Pigsley. Elvis Pigsley lives in Alaska with his adoring owner. Even though Elvis has a cozy home where he gets plenty of affection, his is a heart that loves to wander, make friends and new memories.
Elvis has gone on all sorts of adventures, he’s a big escape artist. His owner has had to lure him back with apple slices before (on multiple occasions).
The other day, during a light snowstorm, Elvis somehow managed to slip out of a gate at home, giving him full access to the wide world beyond. What novel experiences did this latest adventure opportunity hold in store? Elvis could only guess.
After moseying for a while through the neighborhood, the portly traveler attracted the attention of a concerned passerby who in turn called the cops. With the arrival of Alaska’s finest, Elvis Pigsley found himself under arrest.
It was hardly a worrisome development for the friendly pig, however — never before had one of his wanderings ended with such excitement! Peering out from the back of the police car, Elvis seemed pleased as punch. Elvis was loved the experience; he was very impressed with himself.
Thankfully, Elvis is such a known figure around the neighborhood that it didn’t take long for the arresting officers to track down where he lives. Elvis felt the whole experience went well and believed the police were very nice and understanding. Elvis was let off with just a warning.
This and Elvis’ past adventures prove, pigs are highly intelligent, inquisitive animals and can be more challenging to keep as pets than people might imagine. Fortunately, Elvis’ owners are getting assistance from the Alaska Potbelly Pig Rescue on how best to care for Elvis; the Alaska Potbelly Pig Rescue has been a huge help for the pig community in Alaska and a great resource for information. Hopefully, with that added help, his owners will know just what to do the next time “Elvis has left the building.”

“Thank You for Noticing Me” 🥺️ Lonely Shelter Dog Reaches Paw To Hold Hands With Everyone She Meets

Eden has always been a gentle spirit. When she was sleeping under a tree as a stray dog and Good Samaritans stopped by to leave her food, she’d always greet them with a subtle tail wag.

Now that she’s waiting for a forever home in an animal hospital, she can’t help but reach her paw through her cage to hold hands with everyone who walks by.

Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy dog rescue, isn’t sure exactly what caused Eden to start living under the tree in Southern California, but when the rescuer arrived to save her, she could tell she’d been there a long time.

“For weeks and weeks, she was under that tree,” Hall told The Dodo. “She wouldn’t leave.”

People visited Eden and left food under the tree for her, but nobody came to her rescue.

As soon as Hall heard about a sweet dog in need of a home, she wasted no time in scooping her up. Eden perked up as soon as she saw Hall. “She knew she was getting help. She knew it was her time to stop living under the tree.”

Hall brought Eden to the vet, where her new friends gave her a much-needed bath. The team soon realized that the dog had a painful skin condition and was severely underweight, so they began treating her right away. Before long, her personality started to blossom. “She is the sweetest dog you could ever meet. She’s just a lover.”

The vet team placed Eden in her own kennel, where she could rest and recover. At first, Eden spent the majority of her time curled up on her bed. But one day, someone at the hospital walked past her kennel and saw a single grey and white paw sticking through the bars. They grabbed Eden’s paw and gave it a loving squeeze.

“She just wants to hold our hand. She’ll hold your hand and then make the sweetest howl ever as if she’s saying, I love you.”

Ever since that moment, Eden’s been reaching out her paw to everyone who walks by. She’s gotten many handshakes since she’s been at the vet, but the sweet pup is still waiting to find that one special connection.

“We’re working on getting her into a forever home,” Hall said. “She deserves it more than anybody.”

Eden isn’t the most comfortable around other dogs, since she was fending for herself outside for a long time. Her friends at the hospital are helping her overcome her nervousness by taking her on walks with dog trainers, but it’s going to take a lot of work for the pup to feel more confident. So, Hall’s looking for a forever home where Eden would be the only dog.

Even though it’s taking longer to find the perfect match for her, Hall knows that the right family will fall head-over-heels for Eden soon. As the rescuer sees it, it’s impossible not to. “Everyone falls in love with her. She’s just a cuddler and a total sweetheart.”

For now, Eden will keep spreading the love at the animal hospital one handshake at a time. Some might say she’s asking for attention, but Hall believes she’s saying something else. “It’s like she’s telling everybody, 'Thank you!’ Thank you for noticing me.”

To inquire about adopting Eden, reach out to Suzette Hall on Facebook.

To help pups like Eden get the help they need, make a donation to Camino Pet Hospital under "Logan's Legacy 29."

The Diademed Sifaka, also called the diademed simpona, is a critically endangered species of sifaka, one of the lemurs endemic to certain rainforests in eastern Madagascar. This species is one of the world's largest living lemurs, with a total adult length of approximately 105 centimetres (41 inches), half of which is tail. A contemporary authority on lemurs, describes the diademed sifaka as "one of the most colorful and attractive of all the lemurs", having a long and silky coat.
