How about breeding for both performance on the field and a stable temperament? (And maybe if you don’t know the difference you don’t breed). How about training for neutrality to humans and dogs instead of just the routine? And it’s not just German Shepherds!!

Aframe injuries: carpus, shoulder and back. If safety is your main concern teach a target command and then in trial that becomes your retrieve command

Teach boundaries, teach rules, teach them young and always keep an eye on them. Audo learned from a young age “Out” means to release and give space. This makes it easy for children to play with him, supervised.

Swimming season is here! Swimming is a great exercise but like any exercise you haven’t done in a while you must reintroduce it to your dog by short intervals of controlled swimming to avoid injury.

It’s said many people don’t listen with the intent to understand;
they listen with the intent to respond.
The same can be true with dogs.
Sometimes handlers get caught up in their own voice, their desire to progress, to achieve their goal, instead of hearing what their dog is telling them they need.
Rather than getting your dog to change into your way, it’s important to adjust to their way.
It is never the same for each dog. The training principles are consistent but individuality is very important.
When you listen, without expectation, it’s amazing how much you will learn.
Being a good listener is key to being a good teacher; it empowers the partnership and bond with your dog.

I begin all my dogs, pet and companion, with my Platform training program. I teach everything from basic commands to competition about turns and motions starting with the platform. Tony is a 3.5 mo french bull dog learning sit, down and stay using the platform. Sonny is a graduate and cheering him on.

Sometimes the dumbbell rolls after a throw. Even though you can ask for another throw it’s important that the dog knows he has to take the jump as commanded. I always practice this with the dog’s toy for 2 reasons (1) we don’t lose drive for the dumbbell and (2) making sure the dog can think when in drive. Below is a link to my competition jumping video.
