Excellent post from Bravo Dog Behavioural Health. It tough living with a reactive dog and while improvement is possible, long-lasting behaviour change takes time. Anyone promising a quick fix or guaranteeing results (especially in a short time frame), is a red flag.
Consider this… If you were terrified of something and decided go work through it, would you be able to completely change your behaviour overnight?

What is RallyO?
Great question, I would love to tell you. Rally Obedience, or RallyO, is a fun team sport for dogs and handlers of all ages, skill levels, and abilities.
In RallyO, you and your dog work together as a team. You heel to a sign then complete the behaviours listed on the sign with as much precision as possible. Novice includes relatively common behaviours such as “sit” or “down”. As you and your dog progress through the levels, you will learn complex, and satisfying behaviours such as sidesteps, back-ups, and jumps.

CARO (Canadian Association of Rally Obedience) is an enthusiastic and supportive community - join us and meet some new friends who also love doing stuff with their dogs!

Benefits of RallyO include:
* strengthening your bond with your dog
* building confidence, trust, and teamwork
* improving leash manners, which make regular walks more enjoyable
* providing excellent mental and physical exercise
* training new skills with lots of encouragement and guidance
* being motivated to practice with your dog on a regular basis
* meeting people in a friendly, active, dog-loving community

RallyO is a suitable sport for enthusiastic dogs as well as more timid dogs. We welcome seniors, both dogs and handlers, as well as dogs or handlers with disabilities. Happy to provide accommodations for those who need it.

Feel free to reach out with questions, comments, feelings… Always happy to chat about RallyO and dog stuff in general. 😊

Now that the hot weather is upon us, here’s a few Safety Tips to help keep your pets cool this summer.

1️⃣ Provide easy access to fresh drinking water. Pets will likely drink more on hot days so be sure to keep those water dishes topped up.

2️⃣ Do outdoor activities earlier in the day, when temperatures are cooler. Also consider going a slower pace, as most dogs tire more quickly when it’s warm out.

3️⃣ While outside, try to stay in the shade and when possible find fresh water for your dog to splash around and cool off in.

4️⃣ Stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day.
Hot days are great for extra naps, fun tricking training, and other indoor enrichment activities. Hot days are also an excellent time for frozen treats, such as homemade pet safe popsicles or a frozen stuffed durable food toy (such as a Kong or Toppl).

5️⃣ If it’s extremely hot consider taking your pet with you to a local cooling centre or pet-friendly store that has air conditioning. This is a good option for pets who comfortable in busy public spaces.

6️⃣ Cool off your pet by
* moving them to a cooler space, (the basement or garage are often good options)
* offering cool water, (but never force them to drink),
* wetting fur and paw pads with cool water,
* providing a cooling bed or cooling vest.
DO NOT wrap your pet in wet towels or put ice packs on them as it can actually make heat related symptoms worse.

7️⃣ Watch for signs of heatstroke such as
- Rapid panting
- Muscle tremors or weakness
- Bright red tongue, nose, or skin around the eyes
- Dizziness or disorientation
- Thick/sticky saliva
- Vomiting or diarrhea
If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke call your vet or local after hours emergency vet clinic immediately.

☀️Be safe and have fun this summer! ☀️

Training is a life long activity with many benefits for you and your dog. Miss Penny is 14 years old and receives as much training and engagement as my 12 week old puppy. Both dogs work on different things. For Penny my goal is maintaining physical fitness and mobility as well as keeping her mind sharp. Everything is new for the puppy but our first goal is socialization and keeping things positive and fun. Nemo is 8 years old and he enjoy fun trick training and improving precision for sports.
No need to wait for behaviour challenges to do some training and engagement with your dogs, it can be a fun and rewarding activity for all.

The most common problems are fear, especially fear of loud noises, and not doing what the guardian wants, such as not coming when called.

Muzzles aren’t just for bitey dogs. There’s a wide variety of reasons a dog might need a muzzle. For example, Capt Nemo wears a muzzle on walks because he eats EVERYTHING. With his muzzle on, he’s safe, comfortable, and we enjoy a fun walk without me constantly nagging him to “leave it” or “drop it”. So much better for both of us.

Dogs should learn to wear a muzzle, but many people make mistakes and there’s a fit issue too, according to new research.

When people get a puppy, they often think puppy class is about obedience, but it's really not. The most important thing to do for your puppy is to socialize them during the sensitive period, and a good puppy class is a great way to do it. A good puppy class does not guarantee that your dog will never be fearful (for example, genetics and early life experiences also play a role), but it will go a long way to helping you meet your puppy's socialization needs. You can read more on what to look for in a puppy class on my blog. https://www.companionanimalpsychology.com/2015/12/make-your-dog-happy-puppy-class.html
